What If All Pokémon Were Dual Typed? (Alola)

The Alola region has a special flavor all its own, and that's also true of the creatures that we first saw in this tropical paradise! Most of them are great dual typed additions to any team, however there are still a few hold outs that were only given one type, so what if we were able to make them like everyone else and see every Pokémon in the region with two elements?

Lurantis and its prevo are actually not bugs they are based off of an orchid mantis which is a mantis that disguises itself as a flower but with the concept reversed, it's actually a flower (so a grass type) that hides itself as a mantis.

The reason Lurantis is pure grass is due to it being the orchid part of the orchid mantis, it's a plant pretending to be scary mantis to scare away other bug types. The idea is quite smart since it's basically a reverse of the origin. If anything making it part dark would make more sense cause it's tricking opponents into thinking that it's something completely different. Tho that would mean it be 4x weak to bug, but that could also play into why they need to pretend to be a scary predator.

Alright imma be as calm about this since tbh this argument always gives me a headache. So in real life, when animals pretend to be certain things to avoid predators, it doesn't mean they are invisible or invincible and always survive no madder what. Stick bugs can still die to birds, and baby cheetahs which have a coloration similar to that of a honey badger can still be killed by other animals. It won't always work, but it mostly works, which equals a higher survival rate, which is probably why we have lurantis. Due to natural selection taking its coarse and pressuring lurantis to gain a body type that bug mons seem to be afraid of, like the cheetah cubs and their honey badger pelt that freak lions out. Second reason is that on the routes fomantis are in the games, it really only has a handful of birds to worry about, honestly from what I found, just pikipek, talonflame, and hoothoot, but since these are more predatory birds, do they really need to hunt down a plant mon? You know how there's something built in mammals and birds that tell them black and yellow is a scary color? It might be the same for these birds, but instead of colors, it's more about knowing that lurantis isn't worth it, I mean looking at it there's not much there tbh meat wise, its not even meat (probably). And I guess for the third reason. Lurantis and fomantis are depicted in the anime as sleeping and looking like flowering bulbs or plants in the ground at day, but at night they spring to life to find a new place to rest once day comes. The games pokedex also state this, it might be a reference to how orchids have to compete for sunlight in the forest they inhabit which can be very hard consideringall the trees which pressured em to grow on branches, which might explain why lurantis is so aggressive, also this goes back to the whole natural selection thing before. In conclusion. There is a reason, and I have to honestly give gf credit for this mon. I remember reading it's info when it was revealed and thinking about how cool the idea and design is. And to see all that thought just be pushed aside is just sad, sometimes I feel like folks just don't appreciate lore of certain mons, digging deep into the lore is interesting, and honestly has given me a new perspective on some mons that I use to dislike.

It’s a shame bug doesn’t have any unique weaknesses that you can use the sudowoodo “use the wrong weakness” gimmick on it so I think maybe just dark cause it’s a trick? I would've made base Necrozma a Psychic/Ghost, due to "Necro-", as in "Dead", being part of the name, and the fact it's pretty much a rearranged skeleton of it's true self. As for Meltan and Melmetal, I think Poison has an argument. Not a strong one, because it doesn't learn much in the way of Poison-type moves, but the liquid metal it's most likely based on, mercury, is extremely poisonous.

Incineroar is a Dark type because it is based on a heel wrestler, who use dirty underhanded tactics and fight unfairly. Crabrawler is based on a coconut crab, which do not live in water and will in fact drown in water, so it doesn't make sense for it to be a Water type. Fomantis and Lurantis are not Bug types because they are plants pretending to be bugs, which is the opposite of their real-world inspiration, the orchid mantis, which is a bug that pretends to be a plant. Fomantis even has "faux" in its name (albeit spelled differently) which means "fake" in French, therefore it is a fake mantis. It's the same reasoning why Sudowoodo is a Rock type instead of a Grass type, as it has "pseudo" in its name. Dhelmise is a spirit that is possessing seaweed, meaning its real body is the seaweed and not the anchor or steering wheel, hence why it is a Grass type.

Fun fact: if Xurkitree became an Electric-Steel type, it can join the status of Ultra Beasts being mostly 4x weak to a type: Nihilego and Stakataka (and now Xurkitree too) for Ground, Buzzwole and Pheromosa for Flying, Guzzlord for Fairy and Kartana for Fire. Celesteela and Blacephalon are weird ones, but their typings make sense.

I feel like Xurkitree could be an Electric/Grass type since, well, they're Christmas trees. You can see that pretty clearly the way they plant themselves in the ground, they're their world's equivalent to trees. There is quite a bit to talk about Melmetal. It’s a Pokemon introduced in Gen 7 in Pokemon GO, which came out before Gen 7 so that’s Gen 6, that only got into a mainline Pokemon game in Gen 8. Given Pokemon like Basculegion and Weirdeer are likely not to be in Sword and Shield but are most certainly Gen 8, I think we can easily rule out Gen 8. But then that leaves Gen 6 and 7. I would definitely say 7 is more probable, but the only reason I came up with this idea is because it’s such a bizarre occurrence.

I could also see Xurkitree getting the ground type for two reasons: 1, because of electrical grounding, of course; 2: sometimes I see it more as optical fiber cables, which are made of glass, which is silica, hence the ground type

So, here are my guesses for Gen 8. I'll go with the evolutions, then the regional variants that don't have evolutions. Grookey line: Since Sound type is not a thing, Dark type is the best guess since it has Dark type moves in its movepool. Scorbunny line: I hate to say Fighting, but it's the closest thing to an athletic type. Sobble: Poison since its tears are potent chemicals. Drizzile and Intelleon: Dark since neither of them fight fair. Skwovet line: Dark since both of them are kleptomaniacs that have compulsions to steal things. Rookidee and Corvisquire: Normal because neither of them are as armored as Corviknight. Blipbug: Psychic since it has the same psychic abilities as its evolutions, albeit not as strong. Nickit line: Normal because they're just normal foxes otherwise. Gossifleur line: Flying due to how its seeds scatter on the winds. Wooloo line: This one's tough. I will assume Ground since it's a very sturdy sheep. Chewtle: Rock, I'm not sure why it wasn't Rock to begin with. Yamper line: Normal because they're just normal dogs otherwise. Rolycoly: Fire, I'm not sure why it wasn't Fire to begin with. Silicobra line: Dragon, as per usual with reptiles. Arrokuda line: Steel due to being based on torpedos. Clobbopus line: Water due to being octopi. Sinistea line: Water due to being tea. Hattena and Hattrem: Fairy due to sharing Hatterene's mercurial fairylike nature. Galarian Meowth line: Fighting due to being from a warrior clan. Galarian Corsola line: Rock due to still being coral. Galarian Farfetch'd line: Flying due to still being a duck. Milcery line: Poison due to the same thing as the Swirlix line- it's sweet food that's poisonous to you. Falinks: This might be a stretch but Psychic due to how its components seem to have a hive mind of sorts. Pincurchin: Water due to knowing a surprising amount of Water-type moves. Stonjourner: Ground due to having a bunch of dirt on its feet. Eiscue: Flying due to being a penguin. Cufant line: Ground due to being huge elephants that already know a bunch of Ground type moves. Unarmed Zacian and Zamazenta: Normal for an easy way of gaining their types later. Kubfu: Normal due to not knowing which way to train yet. Regieleki and Regidrago: Normal to match the other Regis. Galarian Ponyta: Fairy, I'm not sure why it wasn't Fairy to begin with. Galarian Darumaka: Normal because it's not fiery enough for Zen Mode and nothing else fits. Galarian Darmanitan: Fighting because look at those arms. Galarian Slowpoke: Water because I don't think it's different enough from normal Slowpoke for its typing to go away.

Incineroar absolutely shouldn't have been a fighting type. It's based on a heel(bad guy) wrestler. Most notable heels aren't known for their wrestling but rather their, character work, and using non wrestling wrestling moves to win.

I think wishiwashi should be dark because while schooled it’s intimidating and fearsome, but while alone or when the schooling wears off it loses all of that bravado. In my mind this meshes well with the idea of dark type being sneaky and underhanded. This is a type with moves like beat up & fake tears. Once it loses its advantage it gets scared (not the type but the Pokémon, a more clever Pokémon may have nasty plot in the works).

Lurantis not being Bug is part of the genius design, it should not be bug. If it became Bug, it would just be a generic mantis. The fact that it's a plant that's pretending to be a bug, based on the real life bug that pretends to be a plant is amazing

I can never understand why Kommo-o is so hated upon. I think it looks cool and pulls off the Scaley Shogun Dragon design well. Even if the type has a 4x weakness, so does half of the other pseudo legendaries, and it has good stats and a cool signiture move + Z-move. Hakumo-O is a nice middle stage too and bridges the two stages well

Delmise is haunted seaweed, so that's why it's not steel type at the anchor isn't part of its body and merely a tool which it uses with the steelworker ability. Just like comfey isn't a grass type as its the strings that ties the flowers together and the flowers it gathers aren't part of it.

re: fomantis and lurantis: the reason they are not bugs is a play on the orchid mantis. the orchid mantis is a real world bug that disguises itself as a flower. these pokemon take that and reverse it completely. making them bug type would be unfaithful to LITERALLY THEIR ENTIRE INSPIRATION

I would say Jangmo-o works better as a dragon/normal type, I don’t think it at all works as fighting at this point and I don’t think steel makes sense either because Hakamo-o and Kommo-o also have the steel like scales and they aren’t steel type. Another reason normal works is because Jangmo-o is kinda just a lizard at this point, pretty normal if you ask me. Also I don’t appreciate the Kommo-o slander, Hakamo-o is fair tho lol

I think the gumshoos should be fighting. They're cops/detectives so they aren't really dark like alolan ratatta which is literally a mustache twirling villain. Rattata's form change was specifically to avoid the gumshoos line as well. They wouldn't have a dark form if gumshoos was nocturnal

I feel like the Yungoos line would work better as fighting types. Not only would their STAB attacks be 4x effective against the Alolan Raticate line (which they were brought in to exterminate), but they’re also based off of detectives so they’d be like a pun on fighting crime Edit: also, I don’t see there being much problem with Pyukumuku sharing a type with Toxapex as Drapion and Skuntank are the same dual typing and they’re both from the same generation

I think Poison would actually work best for Meltan/Melmetal, we don't have that combination yet and mercury [which they're based off] is extremely toxic.

Their liquid bodies are not made of mercury and instead they're made of gallium, the only other metal that's liquid at room temperature. And unlike mercury, gallium is non-toxic, meaning it has no reason to be Poison type.

In my opinion I sometimes feel like Power Gem is Alolan Persian's signature move, maybe in the future, when Mega Evolutions return, I would to see regional variants, no matter the region, get Megas, which I would imagine Mega Alolan Persian being a Dark-Rock Type.
