My initial thought at about 10.30am on that day was "oh, it's going to look really weird having one tower". I think the asbestos fireproofing and lack of an emergency stairwell within a concrete central core would likely have sealed the towers' fates by now, regardless of what happened on that memorable, tragic day.

Been enjoying your videos about the twin towers! One thing I’ve always been kinda obsessed with is the three stairwells that were in each tower. None of them went continuously from the bottom of the buildings to the top. There were transfer corridors on different floors and this made the escape more difficult for the people on 9/11. Pictures of the stairs are difficult to find since it pry doesn’t interest many people but I was thinking you should do a video about them and their effect on escaping from the towers on that day. Also the stairs were protected by gypsum board instead of a masonry wall which also made them alot more vulnerable to the jet fuel and smoke. Take care, Nick

I've heard a lot of ppl say that the second plane didn't "hit" as well and in my opinion it was executed even "better" than the north tower. The hijacker had the instinct to hit lower in an attempt to trap/kill as many as possible above the impact zone and you can see that he angles the plan just before impact, which in my opinion, showed incredible spacial awareness, as he wanted 100% of the plane to enter the building and made sure that not even a wingtip was wasted. thoughts? lastly, if it were a glancing blow and just a wing hit I still think the fires would have been catastrophic (but perhaps avoiding collapse?) as the fuel is stored in the wings.

Those are exactly my thoughts. The more time that's gone by and the more angles I've seen of the second plane hitting the south tower, the more I'm convinced it was very deliberate that the second plane was flown into the building at a sharper angle and more towards one corner. I think the pilot figured, "well the second tower is burning, but what if it doesn't fall? Maybe if I weaken a corner of the this building, and much lower, it has a better chance of toppling over", and if that's what he was thinking, his instincts were correct. As morbid as that may be.

Also if you watch the video of the South Tower getting hit a 8x speed, you can see it rocked back and forth for nearly a minute and finally righted itself. That said, if the tower didn't collapse, it definitely would have been to unsafe for people and it definitely would have been pulled down. It suffered significant structural damage.💯

If just a wing would have struck a tower then you would indeed have to deal with jet fuel, as the wings are storage tanks in commercial jets. The heat from the affected engine would almost certainly be enough to ignite it. But yes, you'd have quite a bit less fuel involved, roughly a third or so. It wouldn't penetrate nearly as far and probably wouldn't significantly impact the core initially, but the ensuing fire likely would after some time.

@@Frankje01 If the architect designed the towers with support columns equally spaced through the towers, instead of all being in the core of the towers there would have been less office space no doubt, but I doubt the towers would have came down and the sprinklers probably would have worked, extinguished the fires and more staircases would have remained intact, which would have resulted in more survivors.

We can see in zoomed out videos 175 was continuing its descent into NYC at a high rate of speed while making a turn from northeast to north on final. The sharp bank indicates the hijackers knew they were about to miss the building, so they made a hard left turn right into it. North Tower still would have collapsed and South Tower would eventually have been demoed.

Well, the terrorists had this planned for awhile. They were actually taking flight training at a school in Florida. And after the first planes hit the buildings, there were about 6-8 planes that were hijacked and still up in the air flying so people in NYC were already panicking that the ESB might get hit or the Stock Xchange might get hit because noone knew what they were going to do with the planes they hijacked so people were still in a state of panic and fear. It's crazy how they grounded all flights in the US when this happened. Everything came to a stop.

Here's my take on what would've happened. Let's say that after missing both towers, they decide to ditch both of the planes in the Hudson, similar to how they crashed Flight 93 after realizing they wouldn't be able to hit their target. So the first plane nearly misses the North Tower, loses control and then crashes into the river. People who saw it (like the guys who filmed the first plane impact) would probably be shocked and freaked out. I can imagine some guy being like "Woah I just saw this plane come out of nowhere and crash into the river! It almost hit one of the twin towers! That's crazy!" Then once the second one misses and also crashes, people would probably start to be concerned, like what is going on and why are all these planes crashing into the river. The news might start picking it up at this moment because one plane is a crazy accident, but two planes narrowly missing the World Trade Center and crashing into the Hudson River is definitely weird and not normal. People might start to wonder if there is something wrong with the plane's autopilot or navigational systems. Then let's say that the Pentagon is still hit in this timeline. Once that happens, people would probably start freaking out for real because well, that's not supposed to happen. People would start to really wonder what's going on and this might make them reconsider the earlier misses and if all this was related. People would start to wonder if those planes were in fact supposed to hit the twin towers, but of course no one would know for sure. In this timeline, Flight 93 probably wouldn't be taken over because they only did that after hearing about what happened at the World Trade Center, but if that didn't happen then they have no way of knowing what's going to happen to them. So the plane hits its target and by then people realize that there's some sort of attack going on and they really start consider that maybe the planes that went down in the Hudson were part of the same attack but failed. So that uncertainty and the thoughts of what could've happen leave a lot of people unsettled and of course the attacks on the Pentagon and the Capitol/White House would become the focal point since there are no insane videos of planes hitting the twin towers and them collapsing and because of that, there would probably be a lot less dead because that's where the majority of death comes from.

The Hudson River landing happened because the pilots were desperately trying to avoid hitting anything, and it was a "miracle" that they were able to do what they did. Avoiding loss of life is not what the terrorists were trying to do and anything would have been better than nothing.

The planes were flying pretty fast and pretty low, circling back would've been really difficult. They might try to do it, but more likely they'd just crash randomly into Lower Manhattan or the Hudson River. North Tower was hit on the east side; plane was going westbound. If it missed, it's likely to crash into the Hudson River or somewhere in Jersey City. 2nd plane hit the west side going east bound. If the pilots just clipped a wing or just stall and crashed, as it failed its barrel roll when it missed, it could actually hit the NYSE/Wall Street.

It's hard to mention this day without sounding sketchy or depressing. A good topic might be the amount of ironies on that day. 1) 9/11 is the phone number who you call in an Emergency to save you and noone was getting saved on that day. The worst part were the people above the Impact zone calling 9/11 and imagine being the phone operator handling the call. 2) The fire system was being automatically activated due to the enormous fires on the Impact floors and there was no way those water sprinklers were going to put out the fire and work and save people again. In fact, the water and alarms was hindering their escape from the buildings. 3) At first with all of the office paper coming down it looked like a ticker tape parade on a beautiful day with people celebrating the World Series, but of course it wasn't a celebration.

The 9/11 date is intentional. At least one documentary/movie said that it was chosen by the terrorists (Khalid Sheikh Muhammad picked it, he lived in the US for a while) as an iconic date due to the emergency number. But it's also why we call it nine eleven instead of nine-one-one to differentiate the date from the number. I'm also unsure that if the terrorists didn't board the flights that they might just do it the next day or something. I think they might wait a whole entire year instead to hit the towers specifically on that date.

Possibly, yeah. The South Tower collapse blew out the windows on the North Tower and also caused fires in the lobby (and further up as well I assume). North Tower collapse would cause the same damage it did to Tower 7 to a hypothetically still standing Tower 2. The shoddy construction of all these buildings was what did them in. If either towers had been connected to the core more properly and had more emergency stairways, it was even plausible that the Twin Towers could've withstood both impacts.

Best secondary target would've been random spot in Jersey City or the Hudson River. The other one could try to aim for NYSE/Wall Street or the Brooklyn Bridge if it missed (but considering how it already almost missed anyways, it's likely to just hit Wall Street if it missed with that kind of spin). If they had the skills to recover and double back from flying that fast and that low, why even aim for the Empire State Building while the closest target would've been the Twin Towers themselves?

Pretty much the tallest skyscraper in America’s largest cities were considered targets by AQ. During planning, KSM and OBL considered the WTC for New York, the Sears Tower for Chicago, and the US Bank Tower in LA before settling with just the WTC.

In our reality? No. They fucked up by flying too high and being off center, and they realized it just in time to correct it to hit the tower. In a different reality, a passenger could probably distract the terrorists long enough that they forgot to correct this mistake and miss entirely.

My opinion if the second plane would of missed the south tower it would of pivoted and had a straight angle to the Empire State Building would of have just enough time to gain altitude and crash into the Empire State Building and given the fact that the twin towers and the Empire State Building were the only two super tall skyscrapers in the city at the time to surpass 1,100 ft it wouldn’t of had any other buildings blocking its path

Neither of them were facing North. Nah, like, Empire State Building was just out of the question entirely. If the 2nd plane's pilot was that skilled enough to recover to face the Empire State Building, he could just turn back and hit the 2nd Tower instead. If he wasn't skilled enough, he would've crashed before he could get to the Empire State Building due to the spin. More likely, the 2nd plane would've spun naturally into Wall Street if it missed, or if the Pilot regained control at all, it wouldn't have pivoted 90 degrees to face the Empire State building (unless by luck, but still, he wouldn't reach it). The 2nd natural intentional target for the 2nd plane would've been the Brooklyn Bridge.

If tbe first missed they would have attempted again and there's a chance the passengers would have fought back. A few people in the building would have figured out to leave and people who were about to inside would stand around in shock. More people would have evacuated the second building since a plane barely missing the first building and then coming back would be more obvious deliberate

If one of the planes had it's wing clip the tower and nothing else, it could've looked something like this: The wing would've been torn straight off the plane, and it would've exploded because fuel for the aircraft is stored in the wings. The plane would've instantly lost control, doing barrel rolls straight into the ground and accelerating due to gravity, probably reaching speeds near 600 mph before hitting the ground. If the first plane, Flight 11, slightly clipped the north tower and had it's wing shredded off. After the initial collision, the would've severely veered to the west, due to the plane having only one wing and the plane only having one working engine. I estimate that the plane would either crashed into the Brookfield Place mall, or crashed into the Hudson River.

Crazily enough, I'm writing a novel where this scenario not only happens, but also both planes got saved thanks to Daniel Lewin on AA Flight 11 and a fictional character and a CIA agent's interference on Flight 175. The idea is that in this universe, the Pentagon would still be still hit, but also United 93 would also hit its target (the Capitol). It wouldn't take long for people to figure out that the missed airplanes (whether they crashed or not) were also part of the attacks. So, I don't think it would just be a minor news story that wouldn't have fanned the flames of Jingoism in the US public. The towers not falling means the other two attacks are likelier to succeed because part of the reason the passengers revolted on United 93 was because they knew the towers were attacked.

Yes, it would have been much better if the 2nd plane had hit the tower only with the wing. Many people would have felt they avoided the catastrophe as it unfortunately happened. And what if the 1st plane would have hit the tower higher? There would have been some fatalities on the impact floors, but the tower might have survived (hopefully) because the upper floors would not be as heavy (less floors) and survivors on those floors would have to wait long until they find a way to put out the fire and then get to the victims. They would certainly need water planes to help put out the fire.... We can think of how the buildings would react if the 1st plane hit higher (maybe on floors 98-104 instead of 93-99) and/or if the 2nd plane had hit only with the wing...

The pancaking effect and shoddy construction were what did the 1st tower in. I think it would've still collapsed even if it was hit on 102-108. The outer walls weren't connected to the core, so once that was gone, tower was not gonna stand. Not to mention that the plane didn't really disintegrate, but got stuck in the building and was burning. That added weight too. The floors of the WTC were actually less sturdy than the windows that it was, in theory, would've been easier for people to break down the floors than to break the windows. I suppose if it hit a lot more above like 108-110 + antenna it could've survived, but I think if the entire body of the plane got planted in the building, it was done.

I'm not an aviation expert but I'd think that the way the 2nd plane was approaching it wouldn't be able to turn and try to hit again. That plane was in a dive at almost cruising speed (590 mph/ 950 km/h) the plane had to be very unstable because it was not designed to fliy this fast at such a low altitude. I even read somewhere that fliying this fast and this low puts so much structural stress to the body of the plane that it's very likely that it would be simply dismantling in mid air if it flies a couple of more minutes. I can imagine that making a sharp turn also wouldn't help in this situation. So I agree with those who think that the 2nd plane would have been simply "just" crashed somewhere in upper Manhattan, leaving a trail of destruction.
