The Roman provinces in Britain are often considered to be the least developed ones in the of the Empire. It is no so suprise that Britannia as it was called by the Romans was the first part of the Roman Empire to fall to foreign invaders. Was this fall inevitable and what would have occured if it never happened? We will explore that in this alternative history vIdeo.

Britain never really was 'Roman' only in a small portion and partially administratively. It was a propaganda exercise to say: " we conquered Britain" - many archaeologists agree that a lot of so called 'Roman remains' are likely 'Briton' ie there was a sophisticated culture that existed prior which was affected by a comet. This is one reason why there is a black hole in history, as many artefacts and texts were destroyed. Geologists with modern techniques back this up. In fact, the only people who do not officially credit this era as valid, is the official British history museums and trusts. This is even a topic that many schools are able to talk about - yet the public large museums and so on, do not. It needs totally revising and will be in the coming years. British history is not "barbarians that were civilised by Romans" or " Anglo-Saxons that invaded and slaughtered" there was a sophisticated culture that existed before with a rich history and knowledge. The Romans had a few small towns in the south east of England with retired Romans and that is about it. The re-purposed old abandoned structures, after a comet affected Britain. There is also solid genetic evidence to give credible evidence to the fact that while 'Romans' were there, continental 'Anglo-Frisian' speakers, Gaelic and Briton speakers all lived alongside eachother, relatively peacefully and co-operatively also. Many people were bi or tri lingual and traded all over Europe. Many so called 'Romans' were actually Britons who adopted a Roman lifestyle in the south east of England. Please research your videos instead of just repeating the old stories

I've always wanted to see such a scenario, so thanks for making it. If Basil really did recognize Brittano-Gallia as the most legitimate claimant to the West Roman title, and they managed to hold off the norse better than in our timeline (likely hastening their Christianization due to the faith and it's adherents not seeming quite as weak) I can see them adopting their own form of the Varangian guard. Any Norsemen who proved themselves to have strength of arms and were willing to accept baptism could essentially act as new auxiliaries, frontline shock-troopers that saw the worst of the fighting but perhaps had the first rights to looting and quicker naturalization as citizens compared to the old imperial system.

Assuming the Norse Christianized a bit quicker in the face of more stalwart British resistance, and essentially pulled the same Varangian guard schtick a lot of their best and brightest did in the East, I can see them uniting Scotland and Ireland that much quicker and with a bit more autonomy to decrease resentment compared to our timeline. Iceland was also first settled (albeit very sparsely) by Irish monks. Assuming the island either doesn't fall to invasion or is quickly reconquered in our timeline, this could feasibly also be a "what if Rome discovered America" theory. If the Byzantines could secure trade to the East, and West Rome to the west in the form of the colonial game and maybe reclaiming the straight of Gibraltar, they could use their economic strangle-hold to fund campaigns to re-establish the old imperial borders. What happens when they meet in the middle is anyone's guess.

@@internetxxx_pl0r3r_xxx77 Yeah, but you forgot to take two things into account, the Mongols invasions and the Ottomans. Unless by the time the Ottomans decided to attack Constantinople Western Rome reconquered enough lost territories to be able to help their Eastern brothers, Western Rome will not be able to prevent the rise of the Ottoman empire. By the way, since Western Rome is still alive in that scenario (thanks Bulgaria Empire Mapping :) ), I wonder how they will deal with the Islamic invasions of the Caliphate. Will they do their own "Reconquista" and get back the entire Iberian peninsula?

The main problem would be enforcing control over italy and Africa, but that could be avoided by simply handing Italy to the ERE. The ideal division (IMO) would be a Britannia centralized west of Hispania and Gaul, an east comprising of Italy, Greece Anatolia and the Levant, and a third empire controlling all of the African territories, likely based in either cartage or Alexandria.

@@anondescriptbullet the problem with that is the Roman world was extremely interconnected. Rome, Constantinople, and other large cities required massive amounts of grain, from both Egypt and Africa Proconsularis, and if someone else controlled those territories they could’ve easily cut off the supply for the others. Antony did something similar to Octavian before the empire even existed, so it wasn’t really realistic. The thing is, Africa and Egypt weren’t even the problem provinces that needed more imperial attention. They were incredibly wealthy and relatively safe compared to other places like Gaul or the Balkan provinces, but they were the Achilles heal to the empire. The Western Empire fell and the East was permanently weakened after losing these critical provinces.

I think Roman Britain would at least still be syncretic with British Celtic culture as it was to a degree in Gaul. In real life, there was the sub Roman period, in which the Welsh and Romans persisted for a time in late Rome and after the fall of Western Rome but before the Anglo-Saxons. They defended against the Anglo-Saxons at Badon mount. King Arthur is sometimes identified with Constantine III iirc. The exonym Welsh is also interesting because it is related to the Old High German Welsch referring to Italians. One tribe the Germans fought were called the Volcae by the Romans, and this term by extension became any foreigner but specifically Romans. For living among the Romans the Gothic kings of Italy were called the Valagothi. The synonym for Romanian, Wallachian comes from the same root. The Romans who were not assimilated but the Anglo-Saxons likely assimilated to Welsh culture. A better-conserved Roman Britain would likely speak a patois of Latin and Brythonic. Insular Celtic is quite different from latin whereas the Continental Celtic at least had vague intelligibility to Greek and Latin. I imagine it would sound Latin with some french silent terminal consonants. It would have significant lexical influence from Highland Gaelic, Irish, and especially Welsh. Even during the Roman period, there was Gallic Religious syncretism with Cernunnos and Lugnus as with Serapis in Egypt and Mithraic mysteries. This was true of the Seleucids, Ptolemaic Dynasty, and Ancient Greece has a significant cultural imprint from the Scythians who bordered their Pontic emporia. The point is the Romans in Britain would be like Mozarabic Latins in Andalusia, or 7th century Italians who weren’t quite clearly distinct from Romans or Italian cultures. The Celtic Byzantines idea is pretty accurate.

One thing I'll say is Britain was never well Romanized, so much so that those that fled from Britain ended up linguistically Celticiizing Britanny instead of continuing its latinization. I don't think Rome recruited from Britain and the population even in the south was stills significantly celtic so I think in short order after like 2 generations independent Roman Britain would collapse to Celtic tribes asserting themselves. Or at the very least, Roman Britain would become Feudal to pay the large soldier base needed to control the Island, these Feudal soldier class would eventually have to recruit a largely Celtic base who would in turn bring Celtic tribal ideas into the Army. So Tribe based revolts will occur and would in time collapse Roman Britain by gradual decentralization if a foreign force doesn't force them to unite in which case, they united as a Celticized Kingdom with the ruler of one of those tribes, still expressing themselves in the army's organization, taking over.

That's kinda solved by the fact that throughtout the 400s Lots of Gallo-romans would likely move to Britannia from central and northern gaul as the germanic tribes seize roman territories. with such an increase in population identifying as romans and speaking vulgar latin, it's likely that they'd have enough resources to field the armies needed for the defense and control of the island, plus asserting a thorough romanization of the island even in the rural areas with time. they'd be the last roman government in the west and would likely attract lots of roman free men from all over the west as the germanics take over. if they keep the bureacracy and suppress tribal uprisings, roman britannia would likely prevail at least until the vikings. after that it would depend on if they are able to stop viking raidings from taking hold over sufficient lands to allow future land based invasions.
@daniels7907
@daniels7907 Жыл бұрын
Roman military culture and practices would have been better suited to dealing with Viking raids. The Vikings were hit-and-run attackers with little skill at siege warfare. They preferred to avoid fortified targets in favor of softer civilian ones like villages and monasteries. This would likely see a trend very much like what Alfred the Great would undertake later, where increased fortification would have favored urban centers and larger communities. The best way to escape Vikings was to hide behind strong walls and force them to decide how long they could hang around before your legions arrived.

An alternate Hundred years' war breaks out for the succession of West Frankia(France) between the Holy Roman Empire and the 2nd Western Roman Empire. The latter loses the hundred years war and is forced to forfeit all mainland holdings. West Rome, now only known as the Kingdom of Britannia, focuses their rebuilt strength on uniting the British Isles under the Eagle Standard, proclaiming the third Empire of the Western Romans, the Empire of Britannia. The new Empire is like our Britain, focusing their expansions overseas and trying to keep the 'balance' in Western & central Europe.

I made an alternate map of a roman Britain where this exact concept happened where during the constant attacks in mainland Rome, a good chunk of the city of Rome and parts of the roman army fled escaping across the channel. In my scenario Rome in the mainland falls far more quickly only surviving in Britain. A few 100,000 Romans had fled to Britain settling in the already established roman cities. The island still getting raids from the sea but didn't have to constantly worry thanks to there being a sea. After a few decades of life in the new Rome surviving I had the Anglo Saxons still pushing in hard and taking most Roman territory which Rome only managed to barely hold off.. at least long enough for the Vikings to turn up in Northumbria which allowed the Romano Britons to have time to plan, prepare and then attack after endless attacks from the Anglo Saxons. The Romans ended up taking out the Anglo saxon kingdoms and dividing the land between the Scandinavians and themselves reconquering alot of the land taken from the Anglo Saxons, they still have a big germanic population though in my timeline as the Anglo Saxons and Romans have been fighting for close to 200 years so many germanic people came over during that time although not as many as in our timeline. But there's a very east and west divide at this time. There's the western part which is genetically more Romano Briton and shares alot more Mediterranean dna. The east coast is more Romano Saxon holding more Germanic dna but still holding a fair amount of Mediterranean dna.. The Scandinavians would still settle the north like normal but the Romans do end up reconquering their northern land eventually having 3 distinct groups of people. Romano Britons Romano Saxons Scandinavian Britons The Romans after conquering would experience stability and by the late 700s AD began conquering the Pictish lands and the lowlands would becoming a big settlement building area seeing new roman cities being built with mostly Scandinavian Britons settling there although Romano Britons and Romano Saxons still moved up there too.. The same thing happens in Ireland by 820AD when the whole island was occupied and the first settler Colonies began in what is now ulster and down in leinster whilst the rest of Ireland was like the wild West that no roman dared explore. By 1078 the lowlands was entirely romanised.. all of the East of Ireland was also romanised creating a distinct group of people called Eire Romanos, they often come from mostly Irish families who settled down in Roman cities and intermixed with Romans. A Romano civil war would break out after there being challenge between leadership and 4 Generals declared war on eachother.. A general would be Romano Briton Another was Romano Saxon The other was a Scandinavian Briton And the Eire Romanos joined in also but only in 1080. The civil war would last from 1078 to 1125 after many decades of fighting the Romano Britons would manage to conquer all of the island and Ireland. Many centuries later these differences between the Romano Britons, Saxons and Scandinavian Britons became less noticeable as the civil war caused the Romano Britons to hold complete authority over the east and northern Britain.. Many of the Romano Saxon and Scandinavian Britons who fought would end up either executed, forced to fight in tournaments and earn the respect and hopefully impress the Romano Briton elites who watched them. Those who ended up winning tournaments would get special privileges and marry into the Romano Briton elite, this was to crush any possible chance of Revolt if the future offspring would become mixed blood between east and west creating a bond which would end up glueing both sides together. The Eastern elites became Romano Britons just like the west although many of the lower class were still Romano Saxons... The north took longer to pacify but by 1400 everywhere from the south of Britain to what is Glasgow in our timeline was permanently culturally unified becoming one single entity whilst the Scots still exist in the Highlands but occupied by the Romans. So what would be Scotland wouldn't include the lowlands... Scotland would only be from Glasgow to the Shetland islands. What is Edinburgh in our timeline would be a part of this Romano Briton kingdom. The Eire Romanos didn't suffer the cultural conversion thanks to the sea, the eire Romanos weren't as much of a threat so although many soldiers end up either executed or used as slave labour they managed to keep their culture, this culture would end up spreading through Ireland as more Roman settlements are built and by 1500 Ireland is pretty much mostly Eire Romano. By 1500 the Romans have actually existed in Britain longer than the Roman empire in our timeline. The Romans are often just seen as in Britain instead of in Italy but its just taught that they migrated from Italy just like how we see Hungary where it is today but they migrated from where Russia is today. So the average Romano Briton would look fairly olive skinned, most would have darker features but many also would appear more lighter if you go towards Londonium.. Western Britain is more likely to have dark hair and dark eyes with olive skin looking fairly Italian whilst the east is pretty similar except their skin is more lighter. The north is pretty complex as Scandinavian genes still remains fairly strong but the region has seen alot of intermixing over the many many centuries so although having blue eyes is more common up north many can also end up having olive to more Mediterranean looking features.

I think the best, realistic way was for the complete conquest and romanization of Britain to be actually carried out, and not aborted. With finally secure borders, and another island, Ireland, as an even more secure and remote roman province, there would've been enough of a hinterland to reconquer what is now England from any tribal invader that was temporarily successful. There were a couple of times where Scotland was conquered, but not settled because the general in charge was recalled to Rome.

What if the Eastern Roman and Sassanid Empire had peace before the advent of Islam or if they combined to fight against its spread. What if Julian the apostate had a full reign, would Christianity become the juggernaut in the Roman Empire.

It would have been a Roman state by design but an Anglo-Celtic society in reality with the Angles and Saxons fancying themselves as the best Roman legions while the Celts would have specialized in priesthood and monastery management.

What if rome restored the Republic and ended all the civil wars, but also kept the economics which kept the poor fed preventing the troubles of the first Republic from re occurring? What if rome abolished slavery earlier and without replacing it with serfdom?
