From 2005 to 2016 it can be reasonably argued that Carl Edwards was a top 5 NASCAR talent. Competing for NASCAR Cup Series championships in 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2016 he always came up just short BUT he was always in the mix as well. So when he announced his sudden retirement prior to the 2017 NASCAR season it was easy to see why so many people were shocked by the news. So today we are going to look down a different path, a path where Edwards raced on past 2016. We ask the question, “What if Carl Edwards never retired in 2017?”

I was a fan of Carl’s after I saw him win at old Atlanta in 2005. I saw him come so close so many times. I was devastated when he crashed out in 2016, and pissed at NASCAR. My next thought was hope for 2017. That was crushed at the press conference when he announced his retirement. I think he had a championship in him, and I think he could have finally gotten one if he had raced longer.

It’s a damn shame what happened to Roush Racing. Growing up as a kid in the late 2000s, I would see the team being whittled down from a 5 car stable down to a 2 car stable in the Cup Series, so many great drivers came and drove for that team. I wonder what would’ve happened if he (Carl Edwards) never left Roush.
@danielfoster3642
@danielfoster3642 Жыл бұрын
@@johnhaas2523 And you want to know the sad thing? Mark Martin had said that Jack Roush was already doing that back when Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch won their respective championships. As for your point on if Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth had stayed at Roush and Greg Biffle went to Joe Gibbs Racing instead, well, Biffle would have been great at JGR for at least five years, and the legacies of both Edwards and Kenseth would have been completely changed. Instead of them going out with a good sendoff, they probably would have completely went away as bad as Biffle was in his last few years at Roush. You have to add Roush's sponorship troubles on top of that.

I think that there is something more than this. I mean, a lot of retired drivers tend to stay involved in the sport, although at different levels. Dale Jr. Jeff Gordon, or even Nico Rosberg here in Europe, despite his retirement was incredibly sudden and unexpected. Edwards' retirement and following radical distancing from the sport reminded me of ex-F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari in the 2010s, or Mike Thackwell in the late 80s. Very young and talented drivers, both were the recorded of youngest rookie in F1, had various up and downs and walked out entirely when they were in their prime, no glance over the shoulder whatsoever. The former became a DJ, the latter an helicopter pilot, serving oil rigs in the UK. Both cited a radical disillusion with the sport as the primary cause of their walkouts. So I think Edwards walked out because of something against NASCAR, maybe the direction of the sport or the controversial officiating calls that plagued his title campaigns, or whatever it was.

As if he already allegedly retired because of stage racing, NASCAR slowing the cars down makes it even less likely for a potential comeback if he wanted to. I wonder if he ever criticized the Chase/Playoffs as it's essentially the same thing, while also getting screwed by it twice (he didn't deserve it in 2016, idc). Glad to see he's doing well with the little that we get to see of him anymore

Carl Edward's did say that he was healthy, and he thought that was the perfect time to. But he knew how dangerous the sport was, and he could have had something serious happen to him sooner than expected he probably would have more wins to his belt and maybe a crown jewel, but I couldn't see him racing after 2020 since the cars now are not as safe as the one he was last in. So if he race beyond 2017, then in 2020, it would not only be Johnson and Newman's last full-time Nascar career but Carl Edward's last as well

If Carl Edwards didn't retire after the 2016 season, he probably would have picked up 15 more wins, but unfortunately no championship. Daniel Suarez does another year in the Xfinity Series, replaces Matt Kenseth in the 20 car for 2018, and actually does better in that car that he did in the 19 in real life. Suarez probably performs like real life Erik Jones did when he was in the 20 car. I'd say Barney Visser's Furniture Row Racing doesn't shut down after the 2018 season and probably lasts another two years with Martin Truex Jr. and Erik Jones before they end up closing and selling their charter to Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan, forming 23XII Racing prior to the 2021 season. Leavine Family Racing probably stays with Chevrolet, and keeps it's technical alliance with Hendrick Motorsports until they shut down after the 2020 season. Carl Edwards retires after the 2020 season, but at least he would have informed his fans before the 2020 season started that it would have happened. Martin Truex Jr. would go to the 19 car three years later than in real life, Erik Jones moves over to the 43 car, and Daniel Suarez moves over to Trackhouse Racing for 2021, and the 20 car would be taken over by Christopher Bell.

I wonder if he just simply had made so much money with all his endorsements that he decided that it just wasn’t worth the risk anymore? Yes he was only 37 but he had been a driver in Nascar for almost 20 years at that point going back to his days in the truck series. I almost expected Kyle Busch to do the same after the 2022 season also at 37 years old. Kyle has 2 cups but 2022 was a horrible season for him. Athletes quit all the time at their peak because they just don’t want to grind through another season and Edwards probably fit that mold too.

Edwards goes down as the biggest "IF" in Nascar history. Two drivers walked away on top that year, Nico Rosberg wins the F1 Championship and retires and Edward is 9 laps away from his Championship then retires. What if both came back in 2017 is a question we can talk about for ages. Carl would have been the only driver to win all 3 top tier Nascar divisions which still hasn't been done yet. I was a big Roush / Edwards fan back in the day and wish he would have stayed for at least two more years.

Imagine if Edwards retired a couple years later. Then JGR would have Busch, Hamlin Truex Jr. and Jones without having to be rushed up. Instead of having Suarez rushed up, they have him at Furniture Row with Matt DiBenedetto. Instead of having DiBenedetto at Leavine, they stick Christopher Bell in the 95 in 2020. Toyota’s future could’ve been secure. Now, this scenario is built on Toyota and Gibbs not blowing their prospect pipeline like it’s Chernobyl but it could’ve worked out if they were patient.

I got a rather interesting topic for discussion. This season, if Kyle Busch and Ty Gibbs got into it throughout the season, who do y’all think the fans would be one the side of more? If Kyle Busch spun Ty out for a win, that could possibly be the first time that Kyle Busch got a standing ovation and actually had fans cheer for wrecking Ty (and the man that replaced him), for the win. And what would be even more ironic is if he did that to Ty Gibbs while battling for the lead with 3 laps to go at Richmond. 2008 he spins the man that replaced him out, becomes public enemy number 1. 2023 he spins Ty Gibbs out while battling for the lead and becomes a fan favorite. But the thing is, would fans cheer if Ty spun Kyle or would they be mad because a silver spooned rich kid spun the driver who Ty Gibbs replaced out? As crazy as that sounds in that scenario, we might see Kyle Busch actually get cheered by the majority of the crowd for the first time ever (if he spun Ty Gibbs out for a win). But like the saying says, NASCAR fans don’t forget, so I’m fairly confident that most would love seeing Kyle Busch stick it to his old team by spinning Ty Gibbs out for a win.

He somehow knew stage racing was coming and he doesn't like the idea of arbitriary caution thus splitting 1 race into 3 races. He said that in 2012. I was confused why he left but stage racing was annouced shortly after, it became obvious why. Stage points isn't a bad idea, if driver had some promising pace and something bad happened, at least driver gets bonus points for it. But what I don't agree with is throwing the caution for it thus ruining the flow of the race and having guarenteed restarts along guarenteed crashes. If you John Haas have problem, don't you even waste your time harrassing me and others who just casually watching NASCAR races.

Simple, until the beach washes out people don't worry about a grain of sand, point is Carl was that lone voice predicting how stupid "stage racing is", truth be known I'm sure several other drivers feel the same way but just aren't willing to live by their convictions. Carl Edwards was obviously a very capable driver and part of the elite that win races, unfortunately Carl leaving the sport really hardly caused a ripple, had he stayed I think he probably would have won a championship possibly more but in reality I don't think he could have gotten past his feelings on how he felt about the championship format, to win races your mind has to be right, all racers are different in what makes them tick, I read Carl Edwards as a guy that feels he was duped by NASCAR (NASCAR actively trying to hold certain people back) , no more than a puppet. There is power in numbers but until those numbers unite and stick to the cause come Hell or high water things will remain the same on the NASCAR plantation.

People are quick to forget the clip of Carl harassing Kenseth on pit road, the multiple times he nearly killed Keselowski, and the Busch race where he nearly took Dale Jr's hand off during a caution lap. Good riddance, there's a reason you rarely hear Carl brought up by other drivers.

@@johnhaas2523 Wrong. Denny has said that he had thought about owning a NASCAR team for almost 5 years before Michael Jordan came along, but it was because of Michael Jordan that things clicked right away. So, if you're saying that if Carl Edwards had not retired and stayed at Joe Gibbs Racing until 2020, that Michael Jordan wouldn't take part of the ownership of 23XII Racing (which, let's be honest, would be ridiculous because of the decent amount of success that team is able to do), and if the community's argument would be that Erik Jones would have been in the 23 car instead of Bubba Wallace, sure you probably wouldn't have a good level of success and funding that Bubba Wallace brings forth to the team, but the performance and talent would not change dramatically.

@@chromediesel444 Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Although, not that I'm complaining or anything, but why are we all making fun of him? That's not the right way to settle things with someone we disagree with. Let's be compassionate towards each other, okay. This community needs that. You seem like a good person, so let's be honest with ourselves. Starting beef over someone's opinions about a particular fact is not going to settle things between John and the rest of us. I have had my share of the beef with him regarding our thoughts on North Wilkesboro Speedway, but at the end of the day, there are no winners or losers. Our opinions are our opinions. So let's just stop making fun of people, and be kind towards one another. As you can see from my last comment, I was only being honest, because John literally commented to someone else that he could care less about alternate NASCAR scenerios, yet he, in theory, watched the video that does not fit his alley because he is replying to other people's comments as well. If he does reply to my comment, so what? If there is anything to add, I'll reply with an honest comment. I never meant to make fun of him, because I have learned that it's not the best way to settle things between each other.

Even those who are educated don't really have a straight answer as to why Carl Edwards retired. You'll get a multitude of reasons, but there's no particular consenseus. The fact of the matter is we'll never know the real reason why he decided to retire when he did, so there really isn't a need for anyone to be educated in this instance. It will forever be a mystery.
