An asteroid is defined by how large the rock is, which is 20km in diameter, if my memory serves correct. Yet, even if an asteroid were to hit, it might not be because of the rings. Rings are made of smaller particulates that would burn up in our atmosphere.

It kind-of depends on a number of factors in my opinion: Take Saturn for example, compared with most other astronomical objects, the ice and rock particles in Saturn’s rings are extremely close together. On average, about 3 percent of the total volume of the disk is occupied by solid particles, while the rest is empty space. This may sound small, but it means the typical separation between particles is only a little over three times their average diameter. Assuming a value of 30 centimeters for the latter, the rocks would be as close as one meter away from each other. There is no hard and fast rule, however, due to density variations across the rings and the wide spectrum of particle sizes. This may or may not be true in the case of a rock ring around earth. But I think the distances you’re thinking of are the gaps between asteroids and other larger, slower moving objects within solar rings and belts. Rather than the much faster moving, but usually smaller objects/particulates found in planetary rings and belts.
@IdioticSandwich
@IdioticSandwich Жыл бұрын
Actually, it would be risky as frick, because you can’t just detect that a rock will be there and even if you could, they would also actually be close enough to the point where you have to keep on changing directions, costing a lot of fuel. It isn’t that simple

Being picky here, but just want to point out it would be physically impossible for the ISS to orbit above or below the rings. Due to orbital mechanics, the orbital plane must always cut through the center of the earth. Another term for this is that the orbit must take a "Great Circle Path" around the earth. An object can only orbit the earths center of mass. If it were somehow above or below the rings, it would no longer be orbiting the earths center. They might be able to orbit at a different angle, but their orbit will always have two intersections with the ring.

This can actually happen well, in the cost of the moon because when the moon gets closer to the earth a line 'i forgot what it was called' would crumble the moon making BEAUTIFUL rings but no shining moon in the night. Edit: its called the roche limit "9500 km"
