Would you like to live in a world with 1 billion people?

I'd love to live in a world like this

Don't be so sure. It would be a lonely, junked-up world with huge perils from decaying infrastructure. Cultural achevement would collapse, so things would get boring and stale very fast. The economc order would become absurd because people would no longer need to meet the needs of others. Much stuff would become rotten and disease-filled. Figure that we would have as many dogs as people -- with ravenous appetites. Large, hungry predators are dangerous; feral dogs are no exception. There was a time somewhat parallel to that: the century or so following the ecological calamity of AD 536. The classical world survived none the worse for wear even in wester Europe; all that chaged in AD 476 was that Odoacer saw no cause to preserve a meangless empire by establishing himself as Caesar or appointing a pliant satrap. Heck. in 1453 Mehmet the Conqueror would adopt the title "Caesar" as well as estalish himself as the Sultan in Constantinople. In 536 came a time of literal darkness and cold with ensuing famine and plagues. Classical civilization broke down. Barbarian rulers? Even in Britain the Anglo-Saxons quickly established an active civilization nearly as literate as the Roman world -- only for it too to collapse at the same. Then came the true Dark Ages.

@@paulbrower Um, no. He's talking about a world with one tenth of the people, not a world without people!! Technological break troughs won't be lost. Many people today, especially those older, find the modren world and its infinite choices ra- ther overwhelming, having less wouldn't faze us.

Only a billion people? I think there are too many people on earth, but even Thanos would think cutting it down this much was a bit extreme.

This scenario makes it sound like the population dropped by 7/8ths overnight. That would be a disaster. It would literally be like The Snap except 1.75 times worse. Imagine losing there being only 1/8 of the population to support the cities and less jobs to run the economy. The city of Baltimore lost 1/3 of its population in 40 years and it is now a living hell of empty buildings, drug addicts, and apathetic government officials. People burn down buildings over there for fun. Also the population would immediately being to recover..., in the Islamic Ummah. Countries like Nigeria, the Mali, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Somalia would very quickly fill the population vacuum because of the much higher birth rates in Islamic countries. The Global North wouldn't be able to keep up because the lower birth rates are a result of cultural changes. Eventually we'd probably see an Islamic country (probably Iraq, Nigeria, or Pakistan) stabilize first and upset the world order by subjugating the smaller and now much weaker countries around them

do your research. air back in 1800 in europe smelled like poo and rotting food open air sewer trench, no sanitation worker, even palace had no indoor plumbing, most people showered twice an year guest at Parisian mansions relieved themselves under the staircases and corners of unused rooms.

Thanks for the comment. You’re right, the air wasn’t much better in places like London or Paris back then. But those cities were just small parts of the world. In 1800, about 90% of people lived in pre-industrial areas with way less pollution than we have today. So if we’re talking about the world back then, the overall air quality was actually a lot better.
