can air circulate temperature to the dark side Anton?
@Skurt448 жыл бұрын
Rao Fakhar As he said, the twilight zone would be the only habitable part because of the heat differential. But to answer your question, yes, but not a lot. Since heat rises, the hot air would rise to the jet stream on the light side where it would be carried to the dark side, and then likely be thrown down again on the dark side. However, the water and soil would mostly absorb the heat and the rest of the air would be trapped lower down due to the greenhouse effect.

If the Earth'srotation slowed down that much, most of the magnetic field would also be gone. Bye bye atmosphere, hello radiation.
@SldOnEmWithDa457 жыл бұрын
This might be stupid of me to say this, but why does this happen? When its night the planet doesn't freeze over and in the daylight we don't get scorched. So how does a constant rotation make all the difference?
@davidfishwick55733 жыл бұрын
Because the constant rotation of the Earth ensures that (with the exception of the polar regions) no area remains in light or darkness for very long and this helps to even out the temperature.

i wouldn't want to live on a tidally locked planet... if you are in the "twilight zone" you have daylight for 6 months and night for 6 months, not to mention the temperature fluctuations... maybe by that time our technology has advanced to the point where we can create our own underground cities with their own source of light/dark as well as atmosphere/temperature regulations...
@frisianmouve5 жыл бұрын
No, if you're in the twilight zone the sun would just be hanging there always at almost the same position just above the horizon and temperature stays pretty constant. I'd be more worried about the eternal storm there, as hot air from the close side races towards the cold side in the upper atmosphere and cold air races back in the lower atmosphere. An eternal cold storm doesn't sound too inviting to me.

A better question would be, what if the Earth was tidally locked to the Moon... cos the Earths rotation is being slowed by the Moons gravity and provided there was enough time, the earth would slow to a rotation of the Moons orbit of Earth.

Had no idea tidal locks were so common in the known universe. Makes you reflect even more about the unlikliness of life beninning on Earth, and the chance of finding life on other planets. How do we know these exoplanets are tl? What is the mechanism making them so?
@TJ_Low7 жыл бұрын
I'm not a scientist, nor am I well versed in astrophysics, but I think it has something to do with mass distribution in the stellar objects makeup. If heavier silicates(probably wrong choice of words) are more gathered on one side of the planet, that'll be the side facing the orbital parent.
@davidfishwick55733 жыл бұрын
Tidal locking to a star is determined primarily by distance to that star. The closer the planet to the star, the more quickly it will tidally lock (though other factors can prevent tidal locking). Most of the planets found to date so far are much nearer their star than the earth is to the sun (many are further in than mercury), therefore due to this we can assume that they are much more likely to be tidally locked as they are much closer to their star.

How to warm frozen planet? Smash it with another planet!
@richardmarsh23178 жыл бұрын
Although 90% of stars are smaller and cooler than the Sun, the number of red dwarfs is around 75%. There are probably many stars that are cooler than the Sun where a habitable planet would still have a day/night cycle. If the Earth's rotation slowed to the point that it was tidally locked, the oceans and atmosphere would be nearly spherical, while the more rigid land and rocks would require millions of years to adjust to this change. The land areas would change because of this. There would be a huge tropical continent girdling Earth, but most of Canada, Europe, Russia, and all of Antarctica would be submerged. The magnetic field would be gone, and I don't think Earth would be habitable, at least not for humans. I think it's possible that the daytime side would have increased evaporation resulting in thick rain clouds that would cool the day side of Earth. The night side would still be frozen, but that may not be the case for a tidally locked exoplanet with a thicker atmosphere. Great video! 👍

Because the Earth is too far away from the Sun. Given enough time it would tidally lock to the sun eventually, but it will take longer than the age of the solar system to do so.

Hi Anton, just for consideration. For argument sake, assume we are now humans that has recently successfully graduated to a Class II civilisation. We are tired of space travel and now want to live the simple live on the earth that we left. The problem is that the earth is in a very sad state. It has since lost its magnetic field due to the core no longer flowing millions of years ago. It is uninhabitable and the beautiful blue oceans have also evaporated into space. Upon our return from space travel, we are also aghast to learn that the moon no longer circulating around earth but left the solar system for some unknown reason. We now need to begin the task of constructing material within our solar system, or beyond to repair the earth back to its normal state that we read in our history "books" Where do we start and what needs to be done to rebuild the earth back to its former glory and capable of supporting humans coming back from space? Also there seems to be a larger issue with the Sun. It has been expanding and has consumed Mercury and Venus and is currently super heating the earth remnant. I would like to see a simulation, or series of simulations, depicting this problem and what could be done, for acquiring material, creation or capture of the old moon and returning it to orbit as well as to modify the Sun to return it from a Redish star back to what we see today. If it necessary to be a Type III to do so, so be it, that the earth may return to that former glory.

Okay, but here is the thing. This is wrong. There have been studies published a while ago now that prove that the twilight zone would be more lobster shaped, based on purely ocean currents carrying heat to the dark side of the planet. Add in the atmosphere and tidal heating, and the habitable zone on the planet is much larger than people seem to think (or any KZbinr so far says). The majority of planets are tidally locked, and many of them are considered habitable. You also messed up the seasons. Good stuff though.
