Gotta disagree with the part on Portugal. Reason being? Prester John. Ethiopia was mythologized as being a legendary Christian kingdom out within the Musilim sphere in our timeline. And when the Portuguese found them, they believed Ethiopia were those mythologized people. Now, if instead they found an Ethiopia which was a thriving Christian kingdom which could go toe to toe with the Ottomans, they'd be very keen to ally and have the friendly ports en route to India. Whether that relationship blossoms or becomes a rivalry, there would be extensive contact which would probably advance their tech to be at least on par with the Ottomans circa the 1800s.

@JP-rf8rr5 жыл бұрын
@Mø Nälayé So were many others. Byzantines had their own interests, as did Armenias, and the principality of Antioch. Didn't stop them from working together. Hell, the crusaders tried to form an alliance with mongols till it blew up in their face. So it's likely Ethiopia and the kingdom of Jerusalem would form a casual alliance knowing that they'd be weakening a common enemy in different areas. This especially could have happened during the rule of Baldwin the 4th since reynald was doing raids in the red sea. In fact the kingdom was going through a succession crisis trying to marry sibylla or her half sister to someone competent. Considering that kings of Jerusalem regularly married foreigners from byzantine empire and Armenia. It wouldn't be suprising if a competent Ethiopian Nobel or general was a candidate to form an alliance.

honestly 1: Ethiopia would probably adapted/industrialized to the bureaucratic warfare/technelogical disparity just based on how most christian countries ended up doing so...socially or religiously speaking, unlike many other religious/cultural groups which had become or already were wary and conservative, Ethiopia would have no reason be, seeing as it neither went to the slowly-fundamentalist islam (the only axial age religion near it (that wasn't christian), nor was it invaded by ze Mongols. it would also be more likely to industrialize due to a quite large merchant base/class, which tended to help things also, i could easily see the Portuguese mistaking ethiopia for the mythical Kingdom of Prester John (especially for how much Ethiopia would be prospering at the time), and decide that it may not be a good idea to attack, atleast immedietly (especially since, iirc they wanted to ally the kingdom of Prestor John to fight the Ottoblob)

Ethiopia is mythologized because it does have a rich history, yet if it wasn't for the Portuguese or the Soviets they'd be in the history books like Yugoslavia. How did a population of less than one million (Somalis) have the largest landmass and coastline for a single ethnic group on the continent during the Scramble for Africa and defend it longer than any other in Africa (Dervish wars) despite few mountains to hide behind? And on top of that for centuries posed an existential threat to a much larger neighbour with mountains galore. I think if Somalia wasn't in its current state, a lot more people would take interest in its culture, and history like before the war when it was a tourist hub. Check: 'This Is Somalia' by Somali Enterprise, its an amazing video.

Secondly no Arab Caliphate held sway over Somalia, these were local Sultanates with local rulers like Mogadishu and Ajuraan. The Arabs were themselves engulfed by Mongols, Safavids and Ottomans. The last part of your sentence also makes no sense considering there are several dozen surviving cities, ports and ruined towns littered across Somalia dating from the ancient and medieval eras.

Not sure about the Portuguese having an indomitable military advantage over Ethiopia. In our timeline, the Ottomans were no naval slouches. They managed to keep the Portuguese out of the Red Sea and did score military successes against the Portuguese in a few naval battles. The Ethiopians might have developed a powerful navy, combining their own techniques with the technological cross fertilization occurring in the world at that time. When the Portuguese tried to impose Catholicism on Orthodox Ethiopia, the Ethiopians rejected it and kicked out Portuguese who took up residence in the country. European bureaucratic warfare did not avail itself much against nations that were just as ruthless in warfare, like the Ethiopians, and that were determined to follow their own agendas and interests. That's why Europe, prior tot he 19th century, could not effectively impose its will on the rest of the world.

He gave Muhammed land where Muhammed built his first mosque and wrote the Quran, with a small part written in Ge'ez (native language to the region). Islam didn't destroy what was Aksum at that time. Aksum was moving from the only practicing the first testament to implementing the second testament. A Queen named Yodit destroyed Aksum because she didn't believe Jesus was the real messiah and wanted things to stay as just the first testament teachings.

7:51 but Ethiopians were africans, not outsiders. The reason central africa was deadly to europeans was because europeans didn't have immunity to the diseases of central africa for the same reason native americans weren't immune to european diseases. Ethiopeans had lived alongside central africans for most of human history so even though their society wasn't regularly ravaged by the diseases they would most likely have much more immunity than europeans.

The Ethiopians could have a MUCH better chance at succeeding than Syria for numerous reasons like not being constantly invaded by foreign powers who just leave and wait for the next revolt, they would have had a long time to develop and probably somewhat friendly relations to European powers since the horn of Africa is a good stop off point. Also, probably being able to beat Italy with better relations, power and stability. There are probably many more reasons which make it probable that they at least get some slightly succesful industry like Italy, Spain and Portugal.
