We had a mini side campaign when one of our regulars was away in Europe for a month where we did just that. 3 paladins 1 cleric going to the Feywild to, uhhh, "convince" them to give us their ancient artifacts. It was set hundreds of years prior to our main game, and one of our characters ended up being a lieutenant of the BBEG in our main campaign. It was tons of fun

It would also be excellent to me to have a pink Vengeance Paladin. - if there is ever an older Paladin that you want to mentor your group, you can give them a non-standard color like Purple, Grey, or Teal. I sorta turned that “send us your BEST!” And turned it on its head in my campaign. I’m running Naturverden, my homebrew 5e campaign. The hook is “the goblin raids on the north stopped just over a month ago- Civilization’s Light (the militant religious order) is still recruiting followers, trade has slowed, and the Druid circles have decided to send a team to investigate. You’re each just barely past being an initiate, and so you’re being sent to represent your circles both as a cultural exchange and to give equal weight to those going to find out what’s happened.”

Its worth noting that a set of Winged Boots would basically solve the entire party's flying enemy problems. Also, you can solve a lot of exploration problems simply by picking the right race. For example, minotaurs always know which way is north and give advantage on survival checks. Earth genasis give you Pass Without Trace for sneaking around, radiant soul aasimar gives you flight even with heavy armour once a day for a minute, and so on. Edit: I'm getting so many more ideas for stuff you can do with races, for example, air genasis give you Levitate, you can just all stand on a large metal disc or something and levitate yourself to the top of a cliff. Dhampir give you spider climb, while tabaxis give you a climb speed, and feline agility for the movement burst when you need it. Duergar and the Bloodline of Glasya tiefling give you invisibility, the Bloodline of Fierna tiefling gives you Charm Person and Suggestion (since you mentioned this in the social interactions section)

@Shalakor

It should also be mentioned that feats and races aren't the only avenue for more spells, since there's a Paladin specific Fighting Style for grabbing a couple Cleric cantrips that a Charisma focused build could use (though just picking up Eldritch Blast from a feat with Human/Custom Lineage does eliminate the Cha-focused member needing to also be the Dex specialist, feel like those should be two different party members). Or even for picking up utility cantrips if not Cha-focused.

I ruled that smite can work on ranged attacks for my Paladin who wanted to play as a Ranger multi class made a custom subclass for him "The oath of the subtle" took some inspiration from Rouge assassin and shadow hunter. The aura they get becomes a way they can meld their look into the surroundings. Imagine a cloaking spell, not invisible because at close range you can absolutely see them if you wanted to or were searching but at a distance they are nearly gone. She wanted to be this dark paladin spec ops type so I've made it fit she tends to climb to the highest point and rain down arrows on the fodder and then when the boss shows she does her smite which I ruled wasn't her smiting but over drawing her bow and to do this she uses her spell slot to give her muscles a steroid like boost for that attack. She can still smite up close but she doesn't do that. Great RP from her as well she caught a thief stealing the parties stuff shot an arrow in the guys leg and held him over a bridge to interrogate them.

Because that's not technically a "ranged attack", it's still a melee weapon attack with a melee weapon. But yes, terminology aside, good idea to get enough reach to make melee attacks from far enough away from melee that enemies would have to take opportunity attacks to get to you, or couldn't push through the group of your allies. Attacking a fire elemental or something, you will still burn yourself, but most of the time it's as good. Except you don't have a "long range" with disadvantage. You can't use Sharpshooter + Archery fighting style, but Greatweapon Master is good, too.

I feel like it’s worth noting that you don’t necessarily have to have your high dex and high Charisma based Paladin be the same one. In your party, you can have the redemption paladin be high charisma while have the watcher be high Dex. That way, if you have the redemption paladin wear heavy armor and you give them Eldritch Blast, you don’t need to worry about Dex at all. This way, you can give the watcher Paladin a bow (along with, say, a rapier or whip), and with that and Vengeance Paladin’s ability to teleport and haste, ranged enemies don’t seem as bad as they could be.

I'd throw a Cleric or a Divine Soul sorcerer into the party too & create a thematically 'Journey to the West' crusader themed party - imagine the fun to be had having the do Descent into Avernus (& for the DM too trying to corrupt them), or going up against Strahd, or even Escaping from the Abys (particualarly the 2nd half) - all classic holy vs unholy.

I see multiple tropes for those paladins team, you could have a swat team vibe enforcing laws in large city (judge Dread or Robocop) you could have a Bernardo Gi inquisition team burning witches or/and innocents, you could have a redneck country sheriffs dealing with cattle robbers and then discovering a mind flayer cult around a huge spacecraft (cowboys and aliens), you could have a crusade plot against IUZ, gathering a whole army in Keoland, struggling with counts and dukes in a court, righteousness against chicanery (Grima in Rohan) and what about a religious dispute with good reasons on both sides a heartbreaking story bringing our characters to the edge of the dark side….so much to invent and to live THX guys for your amazing work through the years ❤❤❤

Imagine a Power Rangers campaign that starts at level zero. The Paladins-to-be discover an ancient castle, guided by a vision of a dying goddess. The Archivist there tells you that he too follows the goddess, and if the players swear their oaths, they can take their first step on the journey to becoming Her champions. During the course of the campaign, they recruit more allies to live in the castle and rebuild the order. They also gain an artifact that allows the goddess to project an image of herself inside the castle. She is very kind, very eloquent, and so proud of you. Levels go by, and the Paladins have done much in the service of their goddess. One day, the Archivist tells them that they have proven themselves, and that it is time for the next stage of their journey. He leads them down a secret passage, showing them the secret basement of the castle where the goddess is waiting, and then he leaves to give them all privacy. The basement is strange and metallic, with cables hanging from the ceiling, with a desk covered in buttons, and frames of black glass covered in a layer of dust. The goddess is there waiting, and she tells the Paladins that she was once like them, serving her own god-she became her god’s champion, and one day ascended to become a goddess in her own right. The players have proven their loyalty, and now is the day they become her champions. Then, a small device brings out the Tadpoles. Because, you see, all of the allies the party has recruited have already been turned into Mind Flayers. The Archivist had an Intellect Devourer in his head since before he met the party. The basement under the castle is a Nautilus spaceship that crashed thousands of years ago. And, worst of all, their “goddess” is an Elder Brain. (Just me taking two Dungeon Dudes ideas and putting them together in the most devious way >:D)

There are 3 main archetypes of Paladins: the primary caster, who focuses on constitution and charisma. There's the frontline support, who focuses on Strength and Charisma, and the Beater/Tank, who focuses on Strength and constitution. You definitely want one of each of these, and I feel like there's a great spot here for a dexadin, who can act as more of the flex character. My picks would be: Con/Cha caster: Oath of the Ancients. They will probably be targetted by spells the most, and with Eldritch Blast and some other spellcasting, I think Ancients would make for a great spellcaster. Str/Cha frontline: Oath of Glory. Between Oath of Glory and Oath of the Crown, these two paladins simply aren't taking damage. The two of them are a mobile and unstoppable fortress. Con/Str Beater: Oath of the Crown. They get extra tankiness, and want to stay next to an ally to tank with/for them. Throw in Spirit Guardians or Bless and you are eating well. This also is a good Con/Cha caster. Dexadin: Gotta go with Oath of the Watchers. Watchers has a lot going for it, and a lot of utility, but can be built in many different ways, making for an excellent flex dexadin. Throw in Fey Touched for Hex and Misty Step, and you have a mobile and deadly Dexadin

One thing for the conquest paladin though thats helps with the party weakness is the aura of conquest against the ranged and flying enemies, being able to inflict the frightening condition will impose disadvantage on attack rolls against the whole party if they arent already fleeing in terror, and if you could find a way to get a conquest paladin up to a flying enemy, unless they have hover, if you successfully inflict the frightened condition, it will fall out of the sky with its speed reduced to zero by the aura, so while some other folks have suggested such things as boots of flying, or a race with access to flight, those would really shine on a conquest paladin against that particular weakness.

About 4 years ago a friend of mine ran a OneShot for me and maybe 5 other people all playing Paladins, all Level 20, each with one Boon explainable through our backstory, plus we all got ‘married’ to gain the bonuses associated with that, PLUS in the fever dream that was building these characters, we decided we’d all JUST gotten married and were embarking on the OneShot (to go down and kill Tiamat) for our Honeymoon. It was a crazy blast, and our friend ran an amazing session. He’d cut out cardboard jigsaw shapes to simulate an aerial battlefield of flying chunks of rock we had to jump around on while fighting Tiamat and her many Wyvern servants. We razed hell and downed the Mother of All Dragons in probably 4 or 5 rounds, but it took about 5 hours to do. I loved it so much, I’ve set my current campaign in the world left by the Power Vacuum of Tiamat being killed, and it’s only a matter of time before my players realize they’re dealing with the aftermath of that epic fight, and I am so looking forward to it.

I don't think you have to min-max per se to make the most of these single class ideas, but if the players work together, they can still make fairly well-balanced groups that will still have distinct strengths and weaknesses. The key for the DM is to craft the challenges to account for those things, and it really helps to flavor the campaign such that it's made for a party of that class. It exists in a world where that single class party makes sense and is the right one for the overall theme. But even if you just dump such a group into a "standard" world, you have to be aware of what that means and what they're capable of. Good series.

In my current game I have an all-Paladin NPC party (color coded of course) who travel the land fighting big problems, which allows the player characters to fight the more level-appropriate problems. Sometimes the players are like "We need to call in the Paladins, use sending" and they get the reply of "Yeah, we're a few countries over fighting an uprising of (higher CR) monsters, so you might have to take care of this one." but other times they can show up and enable much larger set piece battles where the Paladins party takes on big background stuff with high stakes while the PCs take on the more grounded stuff that's less fighty and more clever or sneaky. It lets the PCs see things that they might not while also giving them something to work for when they get stronger.

The greatest challenge for an all party, one class , setting I have experienced is something that I wouldn’t recommend for the average/ random table. We were all thieves, working from competing guilds. We were actively working together and against each other. We incorporated the Allan B. Calhamer, Diplomacy Game, into D&D. It was a backstabbing chaotic frenzy fueled marathon. We all knew what we were in stored for and have been playing cooperative as well as competitive war games for decades. Usually I avoid PvP D&D, but when you all agree and the starting gun goes off, you hit the ground running and don’t look back.

The DEX Paladin definitely wants to be an Elf of some description, because they can get four tool proficiencies from creation by swapping their Elf Weapon Training proficiencies per TCoE, and at least one could be a Drow, and take Drow High Magic for the Levitation spell. Dwarves could also pull the tool proficiency trick. I do feel like this being a party of all Elves would work nicely too.

After seeing this video, I need to homebrew an Oath of Silence subclass for Paladins. A sort of stealth inquisitor. The Church's secret police/spy network. They could get access to their own version of a subtle spell mechanic, an aura that adds your charisma mod to stealth checks, and anyone in the aura who strikes an enemy with advantage gets extra radiant damage. And the ability to smite on ranged or thrown weapons.

I just finished a two year game, where we played a group of 5 Paladins. We started at 3rd lv, and ended up at 16. It was a blast. None of us planned this it was just: "Ok, I'm playing a paladin" 4 others: "...Me too..." Our party: Damphir, Oath of Ancients Winged Tiefling, Oath of Vengeance Elf: Drow, Oath of Watchers Elf: High Elf, Oath of Redemption Human: Variant, Oath of Glory Strangely enough, we didn't feel like we had any downsides. I (the Damphir, Oath of ancients) ended up with proficiency in stealth via a background. And I ended up wearing lighter armor most of the game. Once we started getting mithral gear, I upgraded. The tiefling Vengeance paladin would deal with flying enemies with trip attacks and later a immovable rod+ grappling hook and chain. (They also joined the plate party when we got Mithral gear) The highelf and the human took feats to be able to cast limited wizard spells (magic initiate). And they each had at least one ranged cantrip. Also, Mage hand is stupidly useful. All of us took the same fighting style "Blind Fighting" So NOTHING got the drop on us. But yeah, playing this group was like playing a wrecking ball. I would scout ahead, making liberal use of my spiderclimb ability. Then I would come back and report on what I saw. (Unless I saw something that needed immediate action) And then we would just steam roll everything that got in our way. Well.... to tell the truth, our intelligence did hinder us a few times. (Our highest int among us was 11) And while our human and high elf did have proficiency in Arcana, it wasn't.... Lets just say we had problems with it. But those problems coming up ended up not really slowing us down. So yeah, for me it's S tier. Upsides: You feel damn near invulnerable. Plenty of Roll-playing options. Amazing tool kits. Surprising mobility. Downsides: Low int. Any downside of flying or ranged enemies had work-arounds. And since we were all beasts in combat we could take feet options that might not be 'optimal' but did fill in little gaps, and made us a more rounded party.

The all bard party is easily the most well-rounded, since full casting, skill expertise, and Magical Secrets (or the even better version in the new UA) makes an all-bard party really flexible. Because it's not just about subclass. It's also about magical secrets. And if every bard does different skills, 4 bards with 4 expertise each, they cover 16 of the 18 skills. Slap in a Lore Bard, and you've got all 18 skills covered WITH expertise. You just need the four skill groups: Survivor (athletics, intimidation, animal handling, survival) sneak (stealth, sleight of hand, deception, acrobatics) face (persuasion, deception, insight, performance) and the nerd (Arcana, History, Investigation, Medicine, Nature, Religion, Perception). Make sure your sneaky bard has Pass Without Trace and a bunch of illusion spells, your melee bard can pick up Hunter's Mark and smite spells, and the smart one can be the utility caster. Very flexible four man squad.

The first 5e campaign I ran to introduce my current group to the game was an all Paladin campaign set in Eberron. I had seen Age of Ultron recently when I started writing the campaign and the MCU was in full swing so I went the Avengers route with things but now I am really wishing I would have gone the Power Rangers route you laid it all out so perfectly. The weaknesses you pointed are the same ones I saw as well. I pre-built the characters and multiclassed them all; one with druid, another cleric, another with rogue and also barb, to make up for some of those weaknesses and I will say that just about anything I threw at them they found a way to solve it. Challenging them in combat got harder as they figured out what they were doing especially since it was a high level campaign went from level 12-18. A few them did actually die but only due to some really clever planning on my part combined with their own hubris. They really felt like they were invincible by level 15 but turns out that wasn't the case.

Here is my take on how to optimally create this group: - Oath of Ancients - Human or Shifter or Tabaxi or Half Elf with the Outlander Background, that way to gain good skills in exploration skills, making it a outcast from society that has found piece in faith and because of the fact that they don't need the biggest Charisma they can have at least a +1 in Wisdom helping them with the exploration features. A good feat for them would be skilled or skill expert to help with those exploration skills or Shield Master (Shield Master is a really good feat and it would help them with their survivability a lot more, especially because this one wouldn't have the highest dexterity) - Oath of Redemption - Bloodline of Fierna with the criminal background, you make it someone who was a criminal once but has found redemption in the light of their faith and now want to use the skills they have learned in their past life for good. With the criminal background they get proficiency in thieves' tools, deception and stealth which works good since as you suggested they would be the dex based paladin with a the highest charisma score, and the Fierna bloodline helps even more because they get spells like friends, charm person and suggestion helping them in social encounters even further. And on level 4 giving them magic initiative from Warlock to get Eldritch Blast as a cantrip and the other one make it any while for the 1st level spell takes either Comprehend Languages (for more social encounters since they won't have a lot) or hex (for extra damage) or Armor of Agathysts (for that extra protection) - Oath of Watchers - half elf or human to get those extra skills and make it the look out for the party and go full on with the ever vigilant aspect of them, with them also not needing the highest charisma they could also go for a few points into wisdom, helping out where the Ancients would not make it. Making them an investigator for the church and also taking the Investigator background on top of that. Topping it all off giving them the Alert feat on 4th level, going full on being the always vigilant member of the party. Or Ritual caster Bard or Wizard if, as ritual caster would help this party a lot, getting spells like Identify and Comprehend Languages (which would fit the holy investigator vibe) and Tiny hut to have a safe place to sleep, plus the fact it would let the Watcher cast Alarm from its spell list without wasting a spell slot, plus many other spells that are ritual spells and just useful such as water walk and water breathing. This one could also be a Dexterity based paladin - Oath of Vengeance - Half Orc or Goliath as they are the races that can stay in the fight the longest with half orc having their semi death ward feature and Goliath having their damage reduction feature, as for background I don't really have much input here as a good Vengeance story can be varied and the background could be anything as this Paladin's role like you said in the video will be to be the front line heavy hitter as they are the one casting Vow of Enmity on the big bad and swinging with a great-sword or a great-axe at advantage. They would be the one most likely taking shadow touched as a feat as they would most likely be the most fitting choice

One of my favorite character concepts was an Oath of Redemption Paladin who used a bow to deliver her smites from the backline, while also being able to give out buffs and heals a safe distance away from all the fighting. The image of a Paladin wearing a cavalier hat along with chainmail and a tabard, while firing an arrow glowing with holy light from a longbow felt so unique to me. Then I realized the concept only seemed new because it is impossible with 5e rules. You can only deliver smites, and many other offensive Paladin spells, with a melee attack. Still my favorite class by a mile, but man it's a bummer I'm really incentivized to always be a melee focused character

7:35 Smite doesn't work on range but it DOES on thrown Crawford, Feb 27, 2018: The act of throwing a melee weapon doesn't transform it into a ranged weapon. Melee and ranged are categories of weapons in the rules You could use any weapon with the melee-throw tag like hand axe, javelin, spear, dagger - Only reason I know this is from a build I made using the father from Boondock Saints as a Ranger-Bard bounty hunter. Instead of pistols, I used his vest for throwing axes and went around as an axe-juggling storyteller.
