(Day 4) I want to add an interesting bit of context here. I posted the Corvega Gang segment on TikTok, without the previous context from the video., and ironically there are many comments stating that it wouldn't make sense for the Protagonist to side with the raiders. These comments unknowingly proved the point that Fallout 4's player backstory is far too restricting. I just found it interesting that even the idea of "being your own character" would stir controversy simply because the player is not supposed to be that type of person. Whereas in no other fallout title would this be a valid take, since the backstory is broad enough for us to be who we want to be. Food for thought.. and speaking of food. The most disappointing thing about Nuka World is that if you decide to go all out as a raider boss, the game lets you attack Sanctuary but doesn't let you fully wipe out the settlers because of that god-damn plot armor built into Harvey and all his sidekicks, forcing them to glitch into non-stop loop of fighting raiders and being downed. Even finishing the story prior to that doesn't get rid of the immortality. Can't even be the bad guy in this damn world.

Once entering concord you hear gunshots, a raider meets you and harshly tells you to get lost or else he’ll shoot. Asking what happened he tells what limited information he knows on the raiders assault on the minutemen remnants. Offering help he sends you in fully expecting you to die so he can kill two birds with one stone. Later surprising him with your survival and capture of mama Murphy, he gives you a cut of the loot and tells you to meet up with him and the other raiders at corvega for a report to the boss. When meeting with Jerad you must be careful with how you speak with him and if successful are allowed to officially join the gang. Doing so your first job is to go with some raiders to a nearby settlement to intimidate the settlers into submission, given the chance to see the evils of the raiders you willingly continue to plunder the settlers of their land and belongings and return to a satisfied Jerad. You are always welcome in their territory and can always go on further campaigns of looting settlements. However, this is not your place to settle down, you must find greener pastures, or pastures to burn…

I feel like the new scenario would lack a goal. Without a goal player has got no reasons to do anything. In Fallout 1 you try to get a water chip so your vault - the place you spend your entire life, and the only "safe" place you know - does not die In Fallout 2 you try to find a GECK so your village - Once again, the place you spend your entire life, your family - does not die In Fallout NV you get shot in the head while doing your job and then your goal is to finish the job and find out why were you shot What would be the goal in this new scenario? Getting your memories back? Finding a loved one? Saving your people from extinction? All of those could not work with a given scenario - If you get your memories back, then you are no longer a blank character - There is no loved one to find - There are no people to save I could see maybe a Vault 111 doctor, leaving a holotape, gun and few stimpacks, claiming they were the ones that saved you, and telling you to meet them at the institute. Then player will have some questions and reasons to go out - Who is this doctor, why did they save me, what is the institute It is not perfect For pros it - Gives a goal for player - Still makes you a blank character For cons - The goal is weak - Requieres a lot of rework (You are no longer a Sole Survivior, since the doctor did survive Vault 111) - Requires a lot of work to avoid plotholes - Why did the doctor not help you escort you out of Vault 111, Why did doctor not wake you up (Maybe the doctor died after returning to Vault 111, but still recomended you to visit institue as a kind of last chance for humanity to survive, maybe they gave you some passward or secondary wy to enter it) You can see that there are a lot of problems with it, but without a goal, story can not exist. Trust me It has happened to me in a table top game, where characters had no real reason to accept the quest giver quest, so they just refused it, which resulted in me having as the quest giver, having to pull someshenanigans which resulted in almost everyone dying at one point or other.

@@mytn4576 Bethesda knows how to make open worlds and enviroments but lacks in writing department and general vision. One of the main criticises of fallout 3 is the main quest...finding your dad and the hole purified water project is bland and so much forced that it is a drag. Making the player a blank slate and just give him the question "Who am i?" is enought to enter the wasteland. The player is a pre war relic how does he fit do this world? Does he embrace the cruelty of the wasteland or he is a beacon of hope, something that fallout 3 treid to do (Blowing up megaton: EVIL, not blowing up megotn : GOOD HUH? this is the dilemma???) but in fallout 4 it could be done again and succed. Not to seem like anymore of a FNV fanboy, but they also provide the perfect start like you said: you are a courier, who survived a shot to the head. You don’t even have to pursue the perpetrator, nor is it actually the main plot of the game, but rather a small grievance But to top it all off, the 1 intelligence speech checks in HELIOS One confirmed to me that the game is truly one of a kind, they didn’t have to give you so many alternate encounters, they just did. You can actually roleplay as a mentally challenged protagonist. Also another note: in terms of brutality and evil, one of the biggest ways this is delivered is the Omertas questline. There’s a guy you have to speak to who is completely chill and actually more friendly than almost everyone in the casino. But if you check behind a bookcase, you will find a snuff tape in addition to a room with the body behind a very hard lock. If you confront him, he won’t even negotiate but just attack, something like “ah well, what a shame” is his reaction. Other examples include: - Boones wife - Rauls sister (and family) - Bitter Springs - Vault 11 and the wife who was blackmailed, tricked, who then killed her blackmailers - The Fiends - Vault 3 - Legion slaves - Legate Lanius blinding his slaves so they don’t see his face - Legate Lanius sacrificing slaves to Mars - Legion attack on Nelson - Dead Moneys backstory I would LOVE to see you make a video on the brutal nature of FNV! The fact that there’s so much cut content is scary… they already delivered something which set too high a standard for the future, imagine these guys with unlimited resources 😅

One thing I never understood about the beginning of the game is the logic of the concord situation in the writer's minds, especially if you play as Nora. Think about it, you're a lawyer, fresh from white picket fence urban USA, zero combat experience and weapons training... your kid is missing... boom you're in the wasteland, here's a 10mm... good luck. Now you tell me: why in the hell would you start joining in a fight between dirty leather clad hobos and some 18th century larping twit on a balcony? Hell na. Even as Nate it wouldn't make sense to join In. Nate doesn't know who they are, and as a soldier you know to pick your fights. Not this one! In all my playthroughs I avoid concord like the plague and only come back when my char has more experience and someone tells me they're there. (I absolutely love fo4 btw. The predetermined character and scenario actually works well for me)

Yep, Bethesda's drawn out unskippable "tutorials" suck. Especially so after several replays. And all that "moral" stuff in the storytelling is also irritating. It's like dev's are saying "you are supposed to play OUR way, or you are evil". It did not start with F4 though. F3 was the same. The games feel shallow, fake. Theme parks made to entertain. And "tutorial" thing is also old, the one in TES:Oblivion was similarly dull. Crawling through sewers for half an hour for the 20th goddamn time is not exactly exciting. I really miss simpler approach, like in Morrowing or New Vegas (which is vastly better then vanilla F3 imo). "Oh, you woke up, good, let's allocate your stats.... aaand we are done... go, do some crime.... or don't"

@XXXTENTAClON2278 ай бұрын
Incredible video. You’ve earned a sub and this vid is rightfully blowing up, shoutout KZbin for putting it on my recommended I remember when I first played New Vegas I was kinda caught off guard. Essentially, the fiends were just fascinating to me; the only other game I’ve seen explore that kind of evil is Red Dead Redemption 2, with the Murfree Brood and Skinner Brothers. Just a warning, I may accidentally spoil some quests for FNV: There is a quest where there is a refugee camp for the NCR, and one of the guards asks you to look into the disappearance of a family, and points out the little girl with a teddy bear that stood out to him. When you delve deeper, you find the teddy bear, but also find out one of the depraved traffickers keeps it with him and is called “sick” for doing so, insinuating bad intentions, and the family + kids were sold to a pyromaniac rapist who cooks people alive. I even kept a save just so I could experiment killing the traffickers in the most painful ways possible… I didn’t even know a game could make it so satisfying to deliver retribution. Edit: KZbin was glitching so I refreshed to continue lol It also explores the consequences of the rapist, in which he assaulted a female NCR sniper who is lesbian, and she continuously makes crude remarks and sexual comments towards others, with her commanding officer convinced it’s a consequence of the assault; this is a real phenomenon , in which trauma causes hypersexuality. Something that stuck with me was the high speech check in which your character, while trying to convince her to seek treatment, says “it’s just another wound that requires treatment”. That’s a really incredible piece of writing, and it offers perspective on mental trauma; she wanted to brush it aside as no big deal, but similarly to being shot, you should seek help to work through the trauma In addition to the story of Boone, and the idea of mercy killing, and Vault 11 being an UNMARKED QUEST while being one of the best quests in the game … it just floored me. It makes so much sense that the writers were on the original fallout games (obsidian). The sad thing is that I feel like they don’t even do anything substantial. They just provide the bare minimum; multiple evils that aren’t cartoonishly evil, but instead actually evil. I genuinely don’t think an antagonist exists in Fallout 4; even Kellogg was somewhat humane and reasonable.

Fallout became mainstream with part 4, before that only people who really liked games like that played Fallout. But since Bethesda knew that if they appealed to the mainstream they would make more money, the direction was "adjusted". Take the Dunwich building from part 3, or my personal first moment when I enter the Super Duper Mart and it looks like SAW inside. The moral decisions like the atomic bomb in Megaton or helping the ghouls or not. New Vegas had other awesome moments. The atmosphere of Fallout back then was just completely different. I didn't even come close to having a similar moment in Fallout 4. It was all sacrificed for the mainstream audience...

But let's say after meeting them on the way to Diamond City you find them fighting Minutemen at one of their so called settlements. Here we had clues about the Quincy Massacre, and helping either the Minuteman or Gunners you can get either side of the story, seeing as the Quincy Massacre was heavily involved with one of their own betraying the Minutemen with the Gunners. And this can come to a moral alignment in judging if the betrayal was justified or not. We know that the Minuteman were pretty much the center of power in the Commonwealth in helping settlers and fending off the various raider gangs. And since they were in power for so long, something within the minutmen had been rotting, corruption and abuse of power, and perhaps one of the many leaders in the Minutemen found that it has been hurting Commonwealth more than helping it. And to prevent this broken order in the Commonwealth in assuming full control with the way it has been working, a civil war began between the Minuteman, and hired the help of Gunners to rid this parasite on the Commonwealth, becoming independent but later in Anarchy without order. Either coming to terms with the betrayal and having a peace treaty between the Minutemen and Gunners and have the Minutemen start over, and build back up with their true goal in mind. Or wipe out the remaining Minutemen for a large sum of caps and maybe even a unique weapon or armor from the Gunner General by dealing a killing blow to all remaining Minuteman Settlements all the way up to the Castle where Preston, Sturges and Ronnie making a final stand against the Gunners.

The disgust I felt when I first played FO4 after a masterpiece like NV or even FO3 can only be mirrored by the disgust I felt back when I first played Skyrim after Oblivion. The laziness, lack of direction, horrendous pandering to the lowest common denominator ruined an entire genre, you can't RP in an RPG no more.

If season 1 is any indication, the show is actually great. They may not be the best at RPGs, but they've always had a clear passion for storytelling. Since shows don't have players, they can tell the story & it's fine. This unfortunately doesn't translate to a game, as their story gets in the way of your character's.

8:00 Interestingly, the Minutemen have the potential to be a good fit for a brutalist Fallout waste. A faction that was committed to noble goals, only to collapse because of the greed of a few crucial members. The handful of remaining believers in the cause retreat, being picked off slowly by the Commonwealth's inherent danger, until the last few make a stand in a symbol of old-world "freedom". Their leader doesn't even truly want to win, because he feels he's failed as a protector and shouldn't be allowed to live - he just wants to go out in defiance of the inherent violence of the wastes. But because this is Bethesda writing we're talking about, all of that gets buried under ANOTHER SETTLEMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP.

I think FO4 doesn't feel like a true Fallout game for a different reason. In 2D Fallouts, you explored the post-war world, with focus on the stories and how people deal with the post-war world. You'd spend like 70% of time in settlements/cities surrounded by friendly NPCs, 20% in vaults or other pre-war bunkers/installations (and quite often they can be friendly too) and maybe 10% on the wastelands (usually during random encounters). In FO4 (and FO3 too), you mostly explore pre-war world, buildings that somehow weren't destroyed by nuclear bombs and are now used by mutants or raiders as camps, animals nests or overridden with ghouls, and 99% of times those building only exist to have a boss or trinket to find for a usually-radiant quest. I'd guess you spend 80% of times either in those pre-war now-enemy-camps or on the road to those places, while maybe 20% in proper NPC settlements. And wouldn't be surprised if those 20% is higher than actual number (especially when you won't count those "maybe-4-NPCs live/are here" locations as proper settlements...). And New Vegas, kinda merges them both - while it have more pre-war places to explore, they are often filled with non-combatant NPCs so you can learn more about post-war world, not just fight some raiders and read some pre-war stories. And I'd say interacting with those people, being nice or non-nice to them, is what Fallout is all about.

Fallout will never be brutal, because Bethesda's Fallouts are a parody of the setting. And no, Fallout 4 wasn't the beginning of the "wipe appeal". It's been going on since Oblivion, as that already was a very noticeably mainstreamed experience compared to Morrowind. Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt with a new franchise since like 1995, but ultimately it was, unironically, "Oblivion with guns". Then came Skyrim, again, much more mainstreamed game set in the most mainstream province in the game (well, after the retconned Cyrodiil). Next on the chopping block we got TES6 set in the middle east of the Elder Scrolls, that's canonically 80% of desert and 20% of savannah.

FO3 was my first Fallout, it blew my mind that you could explore this uncanny valley American wasteland open world in first person. Stepping out of the vault for the first time and being blinded by the sun before my molevision faded and Washington DC revealed itself to me was... it was awe inspiring. Exploring the burnt out town just below the vault where nothing remains of it's pre-war inhabitants set me on edge, then happening upon Megaton's turbine engine powered gate only to be met by a Wild West Sheriff, a nuke worshipping cult, my first ghoul, and somehow an Irish bartender. I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the wildness of Fallout. It was such an experience and honestly I don't think Bethesda has the balls or the brains to make anything like FO3 ever again. Man, entering the ruins of the Metro DC for the first time after fighting the Raiders at the Super Duper Mart, running from the ghouls of the underground, and meeting my first Super Mutant as he tried to forcefully acquaint my head with his nail board. And then right after you're suddenly thrust into a COD WW2 feeling set piece pushing the Mutie trenches with the Brotherhood of Steel which climaxed with that big fucker throwing fuckin nukes at you!! Compare this to wading through the aforementioned 3 hour long exposition intro of Fallout 4. Thanks Codsworth. I love the FO universe so much, but I have so many conflicting feelings about it too. It really does feel like trying to hold together a marriage with an alcoholic bipolar chick refusing to take her meds. There's good memories and I know there is a future in there somewhere, but I don't have the energy to try to help her fix this fucking mess anymore.

I feel like both New Vegas and 3 were a great middle ground between dreadful and dark, and goofy survival adventures. Your decisions make a wide impact, but lets you be who you want to be. Sure, you always have the same backstory - Born in vault 108, or being shot in the head, but you can choose your morals and ideals after, and shape the wasteland in your heroic, or twisted image. You can be nobody whose somebody, and, in the words of Todd Howard, but this time in a more logical sense - "it just works" but this time, it works well to satisfy players, and extend fallout.

Simple formula for a perfect Fallout: Just add, - No locked story beginnings, instead have your character start from a ‘day in the life of’ {your created character} eg: farmer, courier, enclave. - main story is a power struggle caused by a sudden unexpected event, as you rise from a nobody you defeat all the people trying to rise to power. - animate all interactions, this will add a deeper level of immersion and add to how constructive a overall play session feels, you feel every moment and aren’t consumed by loading screens. - double down on base building, community building, character interactions and their reasons for personality traits.

Your evaluation is spot on. As a former diehard fan of the franchise, I wondered why Fallout 4 just had no bite in comparison, and you’ve revealed the core differentiator. Any faction you side with has some underlying narrative of “we’re the real good guys” but none of them are just blatantly evil. Seeing the effects of real evil in the old games actually forced me to think about it and I would argue made me a better person than being shoved into a foregone conclusion.

I dont think walking up to the raider and being asked is a "great" choice, when you pick a path its later on in the game, having it be too divergent at the start means that there's too much to work on and paths to take and they cant properly focus on one. A player looks at the world, sees the factions, and chooses. Being asked by a dude with a gun in your face deciding half the game plot with a single dialogue box meanwhile the player barely knows the controls is just bad game design. The first enemies you encounter are obviously the bad guys so the player can walk in guns blazing and aware, it would suck for a new player to walk in, say no, and get shot because everyone suddenly turns hostile at once without that slow burn of getting deeper and deeper into the town.

I think this is a perfect summary of why New Vegas appealed to so many of us. It was a good blend of the 3rd person with the "choose your own adventure" glaze we all know and love. And you could do some absolutely twisted shit in that game, and still see the ending. Was the canon "ending" a bit of a 2 way split? Yes. But it's only to give a historical pretext of the outcome of a major conflict in that region at the time. Would I have liked to have seen things like you being able to negotiate with Caesar as the leader of the Powder Gangers, for example? Yes. That would have been awesome. But at the same time, it's nothing the mod community couldn't do. I'm happy with the product that I got right out of the box, and like all Bethesda games...the mod community only made it better.

Maybe it's just b/c of my depression or something like that, but tbh I actually prefer Fallout 4 being a lot "lighter" and more optimistic than its predecessors. Fallout for me has always been more about finding optimism and hope, celebrating the love that makes life worth living even when everything else sucks balls. And I feel that 4 really captures that, as it has plenty of darkness to it that makes it so the more hopeful themes feel earned and appropriate. No offense intended, but as I've gotten older, I've just looked back on a lot of the darker elements in previous games (like the sex slavery in 3 & NV or child murder in 1 & 2) and it can't help but just seem kinda... shallow, imo. A story doesn't need to be bloody and brutal for its story to be dark - it just needs to have dark elements to it. Anatomy is one of the scariest and darkest games in the history of ever imo (along w/ being a fantastic game that everyone should play, seriously, it's great), and I can't remember a single drop of blood in it. I also don't think it's fair to say that lacking a certain brutality means Fallout 4 isn't a "true" Fallout game, as that seems really gatekeeper-y imo and misses how so many people come into this franchise for different reasons. To each their own, of course, and I'm sorry if this comes across as me raining on your parade or whatever. Have a pleasant afternoon!
