The comments section illustrates my point about Germany's ideology perfectly. I'm getting equal numbers of comments telling me how Germany was ABSOLUTELY socialist and comments telling me Germany was hard-core right and NOT socialist at all. Thank you for proving my point about how Nazi Germany cannot be pinned down on a left-right political spectrum.

@@dai-belizariusz3087 National socialism and socialism are totally different. Although they might share certain policies such as protectionism, it's important to derive the intention behind the implementation of such policies. For example, if a socialist was to advocate for protectionism in a developing nation it would be because they feel as though those policies would negate the threat of Western nations exploiting said developing nation. If a national socialist (fascist) was to advocate for protectionism in one's own country however it would be due to some greater dogmatic ideals about national identity and race relations. Edit: also it's worth mentioning that the first group targeted by the Nazis were socialists, even before the Jews. I think that says it all

@@dai-belizariusz3087 Socialists who are also nationalists aren't all Nazis though. The New Deal, Scandinavian Social Democracy, the British Labor Party, they all depended on the Bretton Woods System and the restriction of the ability of capital and labor to move across borders. In regards to Fascist economics, and Nazism in particular, it was all about the state. Nazis pursued whatever economic policy they thought would be best for the German state. That means they might socialize one industry, heavily regulated another, and deregulate another. There was no underpinning ideology except that which benefited the state. The best example of a Fascist economic model today is actually "communist" China.

The other thing that occurred to me with the whole "twisting of history and science" thing is the american south. It's not nearly as extreme a situation as you're talking about, and they've been somewhat restrained by the rest of the country, but think about what they've attempted to do to school curriculum with their racist (civil war revisionism, selective or omitted teaching about civil rights and native americans) and religious (abstinence only sex-ed, teaching intelligent design in biology classes) beliefs. They've somewhat succeeded in doing this _without_ being a totalitarian government, and while dealing with a higher government that doesn't fully back the ideas. Personally I agree with altrenatehistroyhub, and think that everything being twisted and taught through the lens of nazism is more than possible, but probable. Definitely don't think that cellphones and information technology would be killed. The NSDAP Party was quite interested in radio technology especially for propaganda purpuses. I would rather expect a huge state funded push towards such technologies. But very different than what we imagine as for example the internet. It would not be built on personal freedom of expression but rather on survaliance and propaganda. There are enough real world examples of countries using the internet and computers for propaganda and survaliance instead of personal freedom

They would probably solve the problem the same way China is doing right now. - by monitoring everyone’s activities and limiting what sites you can visit etc. I.e. the great firewall of China - the social credit system - by blocking or making controlled versions of browsers and search engines - surveillance of everything coming in and out through the net - by having a huge propaganda machinery, troll factories, that tries to influence every discussion forum on the internet with deceptive information and propaganda

A big issue is when some people think "Socialism," they only think of "Marxism." And the Nazis completely 100% hated Marxism, believing it to be a Jewish conspiracy. So they suddenly think Nazis are completely different. In reality, different governments can have similar ideas, while also holding different interpretations & perspectives that lead to them hating each other. The Sino-Soviet Split is a great cold war example of this.

The only reason Hitler named his ideology National Socialism was because he wanted to paint Nazism in a favorable way to the working class. He wanted to paint Nazism as this worker supporting and worker friendly ideology as socialism seemed to have been popular amongst the working classes. However it wasn't similar at all to any socialist ideology at the time. It was completely different from any other ideology that was called socialist at the time. The word socialism for Hitler was simply marketing. If Hitler was instead in the United States for example since capitalism is more popular amongst the working class than socialism he'd might have instead used the word capitalism to appeal to the people there. It was simply marketing.

@@tythorn13 Tik is full of shit on that topic, and his position has no actual weight. He's a military historian. All he's doing is playing with the definition of words so he can paint all opposing ideologies as part of one monolithic socialist entity that his own, iirc extremely libertarian capitalistic liberal democratic views stand against. Basically, Tik is saying that "socialism" just means being populist and collectivist, with a trend towards authoritarianism. I find this to be a deliberately broad definition that only exists to group disparate ideological trends together. What is essential to socialism, in my belief, is the acceptance of class struggle as a guiding force of human history and conflict and the belief that the poor and lower class people have shared interests which should see them unite against their elite masters and establish true freedom. Socialism MUST BE egalitarian in nature, and while nationalistic socialism is not a contradiction it must still be framed in the context of class struggle. Fascism explicitly rejects all of this. What it champions is the national or racial struggle, the idea that regardless of social status, all members of one nation are inherently more alike than they are to members of outgroups, and that all of history is defined by the struggle of different nations or races against each other. All interactions between nations are zero-sum, with no meaningful cooperation being possible except in warfare against others, with war being the natural state of mankind. This is why you'd see capitalists and industrialists side with fascist movements against socialists: Fascism rejects class warfare in favor of national struggle, and supports all classes working together as one united front against enemies both foreign and domestic. Fascism rejects egalitarianism in favor of immutable natural hierarchies, which is why while socialism does not have to be authoritarian, fascism MUST be.

The best take on alternate reality of Axis victory in my opinion is the lore of The New Order: Last Days of Europe, since not only it portrayed the horrors of the genocide and slavery in Eastern Europe or Japan's brutal colonialism in Asia, but also it avoids a trope that many similar media (e.g., The Man in the High Castle, even as much as I enjoyed it) unfortunately do, inadvertently or not, which is propagating the myth of Fascist hyper efficiency. Because Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan was wracked with many, many incredibly petty infighting and borderline criminal incompetence.

Aren't laws against incest sort of like a modern form of eugenics and miscegenation? Similar to eugenics because it decides with what people you can breed and miscegenation because this is decided based on blood relations. In the case if miscegenation it's because the people are considered too far apart in terms of kinship, too different. While in the case of incest it again has to do with how close people are but instead of being about how far away they are it's about them being considered too close.

You should watch Extra Credits Great Northern War series. Or maybe The Danelaw series. Although i would prefer the Great Northern War series, since that series is more about Sweden, and Sweden is the best country in the world (im not biased, and if anyone says i am, they are lying.) Or maybe something about the Kalmar Union. Maybe i just missed it, but im pretty sure you havent reacted to anything about Sweden, or Scandinavia in general. Which strikes me as odd, considering the fact that Sweden used to be one of the most powerful countries in Europe. The Swedish "Stormaktstiden", or "the era of great power" is a very interesting time in Swedish history, and i'd love to hear your thoughts about it. Although, the great northern war series is more about the war that ended "stormaktstiden" and began "frihetstiden", meaning "the era/age of freedom", so maybe there's a better video/series for you to watch that is about the Swedish Empire as a whole, rather than just the end of it. Either way, love your stuff. But would love it even more if you reacted to a bit of stuff about Scandinavia and The Nordic Countries(especially Sweden).

Honestly I think the Nazis would have evolved into something similar to what we see in China when it comes to a lot of the things that he trys to put a military spin on for some reason.

21:40. I read somewhere, I am paraphrasing but it essentially said Germany could have somehow destroyed the RAF and the Royal Navy and Operation Sealion would have still failed, one thing it said was because German transports were river barges and where not equipped to ferry soldiers across the English Channel and North Sea, but even if they did put boots on the ground, they still had to deal with the British army and a hostile populace that I can see would be armed by the government. To sum up, Operation Sealion succeeding is IMO pure fantasy. 23:10. There was a named operation for the invasion of Switzerland called Operation Tannenbaum. The funny thing about the word "Nazi" is that it already had a meaning in German before the infamous party ever existed. Its original meaning was a slang term for an uneducated, uncultured country bumpkin. In modern American English, terms with the same meaning would be "redneck", "rube" or "hick". This term was popularized outside of Germany by Germans who were hostile to the party and had to flee to other countries.

At 22:40, Cody is wrong. The British empire at this point had enough independent Dominions which would have gone their separate ways had the Nazis taken the British mainland. the fact is many of these countries were already opposed to Nazi Germany's ideology and would have been safe in place (South Africa, Australia, New Zealand) because the Nazis could not have got to them or protected by the US (Canada and Newfoundland come to mind). Sub-Saharan Africa, India and the Caribbean would not have faced Nazi invasion simply because they were either too close to America (Caribbean) or held no strategic value (Africa, India).

Militarism was always a key aspect of the character of Germany going back to its predecessor Prussia. I think leaning on that would be the easiest way for the 3rd reich to hold onto power. Especially after the death of hitler, keeping up military production would have kept the German people employed as the economy was a major factor in the many of them supporting the party.

"When you come to power through creating enemies, there always has to be enemies." That's a really wise observation and describes soooo many things, even in today's America. The past couple election cycles (both parties), the mainstream media, etc. Those things very much reflect being what they are by making enemies and that's why they have to keep making more.

Hitler was a Socialist. Rather than advocating for state ownership of the means of production, he permitted the means of production to remain in private hands, but the control of the means of production were in the hands of the state. Modern Socialist don't like being grouped in with Hitler, but that is just too bad.

In the GDR the kids were raised in a specific ideology, but it didn't get that far, like he describes it in his what-if-reich. Not erveryone agrees with everthing and hundreds of years of culture can't be erased. There was allready a generation raised in the third reich. And not everyone was automatically a Nazi.

5:39 I see what they are talking about, if you compare to the Soviet Union, they skewed science to their ideology in a number of ways, most notably their adherence to Lysenkoism (as opposed to Darwinian evolution) which set the USSR back tremendously in just about all of biological sciences.

Eh. They got free because Germany had to leave to deal with their collapsing war effort Tito didn't do that, the Allies did. If the full force of Germany is free to deal with the partisans indiscriminately, it goes a lot differently. What the partisans did was survive while resisting, which is a lot more than nothing but I don't think we can say they "freed themselves."
