7:55 The Battle of Jutland makes it clear that the High Seas Fleet was a match to the Grand Fleet in 1916. In a scenario with a Central victory without the UK as an early belligerent where the two fleets battle it out later and Germany may have had time to add a few capital ships to the equation Germany would still need quite some luck to keep the UK at bay in the long run. The RN had the larger fleet and would have learned from early setbacks like Jutland, but may have lost the appetite without an expeditionary force fighting the Centrals. The number of different possible scenarios is quite large, but I can see the Imperial German Navy hold off the RN in a defensive war. I wonder what a Jutland type battle in the Baltic would have looked like.

The question of the Colonies/Empire is the question which would have brought Britain into the War in the first place. A lot of the British politicians had little interest in Europe (Haldane was a Francophile and was pushing for involvement), Germany could have Europe provided that it respected Britain’s right to its Empire. In you first video you mentioned the Germans not coming out again after Jutland - the High Seas fleets problem was it had challenged the Grand Fleet once and failed, it really could not challenge it again when it was only getting stronger in terms of capital ships.

The "What if" video implied (and you did not comment on it) that imperial Germany was an absolute monarchy. That is not true. Germany had a constitution which limited the Kaisers power, so Germany was a constitutional monarchy. And it did have democratic elements. For example, every law had to be passed by the Reichstag, which was freely elected. Also, I am a bit confused as to how Germany would take all British colonies to create Mittelafrika. Wasn't Germany winning the war conditional on the UK not entering the war? (from part 1) Lastly, I am not sure how great a template the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk is for other peace treaties after a German victory. The circumstances through which the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk came about were very unique. Initially, the Russians initiated peace talks. But Trotzki stalled the negotiations for months. In hopes that Germany would lose in the west before negotiations ended (he called it "neither peace nor war"). Then Ukraine declared independence in January of 1918 and signed a peace treaty with Germany on Feb 9th 1918. Germany ended the fruitless peace talks with Russia and resumed fighting on Feb 17th. And by March Russia was forced to accept peace at any condition. These events (including the reckless gamble by Trotzki) are unlikely to unfold in a similar way in a different timeline. And they are even less likely to unfold similarly for a peace in the west.

15:09 in our timeline the US was actually the first of the Allied Nations to normalize its relations with Germany after the war. Newly knitted economic ties allowed the German economy to recover from 1924 onward. These close ties were then one of the reasons the Great Depression hit Germany almost equally hard as the US itself which directly fueled the rise of Nazism.

I feel like this completely ignored the roles with the austrians and Italians. If Germany was doing better, they might have propped Austria better and put down the Hungarian uprisings. They might have made Austria cede regions to Italy, bringing them into the central powers. With the Italian navy and Mediterranean control it would have been a British loss.

Dear, thank you very much for your video. Imaging what would have happened "if" is fun. One of the things I would like to point out is the British foreign polics. I don't see UK giving up so easily its usual politics to get a balance between the different powers in continental Europe. Then, note that, in the early 20th century, there was still the wishes of the different people in the empires to get freedom for their nation. It's hard to imagine that the Austrian, Russian and Ottoman empires would collapse but not the German one. Finally the war between France and Germany would have been really quick in this scenario, meaning that even if the debt to pay for France to Germany would have been huge, France would have paid it really fast like in 1870 to make sure that Germany would not forget that France would get its revenge. It's possible UK and the States would not have fought against Germany "officially" but it's hard to believe that they wouldn't have supported France financially and thanks to their industries.

I feel like the main thing I disagree with would be what happens to Britain after the war. France would be hit significantly harder than the British would, as they would likely be entirely occupied by the germans, but the british would still retain their navy and complete control of their homeland. I feel like what would be more likely to happen in africa is Britain splits the continent with Germany in such a way that they don't step on each other's toes. For precedent look at the napoleonic wars, where despite the coalition losing several times the worst that France could do to Britain was cut off their trade with the mainland. imo the brits would definitely try to be friendly with the germans once they saw the writing on the wall, as so long as they can maintain their global empire neither britain nor germany will really be able to pose a massive threat to one another.

Regarding Austria-Hungary: I don't see their alternate future as dark. Franz Ferdinand and Karl (so the shot Crown Prince and his "replacement") both had already pretty well worked out plans regarding a Danubian Federation. Now whether that would work or not is unforseeable, but in a timeline where Austria had won a World War and has the support of the full German might, it is likely that it could have worked.

There was also an unappreciated closeness of France and the USA due to the side they were on in the Revolution. Indeed I could argue that it took the Second WW (and the relatively hostile rise of DeGaulle) to make the USA and Britain become a lot closer than the USA and France.
@theoutlander14112 жыл бұрын
I think an interesting area to explore would be how it might affect the future Axis nations. It's quite possible you could still see a Fascist Italy rise from the ashes, since a lot of Mussolini's stated reasons for forming his movement was from not getting enough from the military victory, let alone not getting anything at all (or even Italy losing) provided Italy participated in the war (given the timeline of victory). What relation this would have with France or Spain remains to be seen however, and it's possible with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War that relations between Monarchist Germany and Fascist Italy could be mended or if (depending on the route France and Britain take) could turn the conflict into a new European War. Additionally, Japan also felt scorned by Versailles and the shift of Britain away from them and into greater relations with America. Since the United States never got involved, Japan might maintain common cause with Britain, and depending on the severity of the new treaties, join a Anti-German coalition in the future. They also might walk back some of their more modernist approach to government in exchange for a more Imperial one than we got in our timelines where the Emperor as complete direct control as a result of Germany demonstrating it is still the most superior form of governance.

I'm a bit iffy about Germany getting both these *huge reparations* and *all* of the colonies. In this scenario Britain hasn't really be beaten, they just bow out of the war because a land war would be a disaster for them. I don't see Britain standing by idly while Germany forces such a one-sided peace treaty on France, that gives the German Empire quasi complete control over Africa. Especially since this also includes Britain's colonies. Other than that it's the quality content I came to expect from AlternateHistoryHub.

I'm curious about what would happen in Brazil. The president, when the war started, was Venceslau Brás, and he inherited a civil war from the last government, which would only end in 1916. Between that and Brazil's very limited participation in WWI, in 1917, he still had to contain an uprising in his military. Brazil began to industrialize because importing from Europe in times of war was extremely difficult, but the heaviest industrialization would come in the government of military dictator Getúlio Vargas, who despite fighting at the allies side, was a great admirer of fascism (and a fascist himself). I don't know if he would have ever risen to power if the Central Powers had won the war.
@Moebius-M3 жыл бұрын
If fascism existed depends pretty much on the treaties with italy. Italy "won" the war and still went fascist so losing it wouldn't have helped...
@TheMasonK3 жыл бұрын
True but one of the big reasons for the rise of extremism was economy’s busting after war debts being unpaid. Part of the reason Mussolini came to power was because of the Italian economy being in shambles. Lets say Germany wins the war, you gotta think they don’t want as much reparations from France as France wanted from Germany in our timeline just because the Germans actually won the Franco-Prussian war. So with less amounts of war debt being unpaid does it send the world economy into a great depression like it does in our time? I’m aware that this wasn’t the only cause of the Great Depression. There will always be recessions in capitalism. It’s inevitable but would this recession have been enough to breed the conditions in which fascism takes hold in Europe? That’s where in my opinion it gets real tricky to predict what would happen.

The way i see it, the tricky thing with “would Germany be able to sustain and expand colonies in Africa?” is that the Germans winning the war is not the same Germans who losing the war. For example, the fighting down in Africa that Germany actually did do during this period of time went quite poorly and you could make the argument that is because they underestimated the resistance and the type of warfare. So the germans losing the war was in my mind not capable of sustaining colonies in Africa. The Germans winning the war on the other hand is obviously more tactically capable and therefore not as prone to underestimating the African continent. So the argument for them sustaining colonies is easier to make. But unlike the situation in Europe, where you can actually see specific things going down or not going down, the matter of colonies is almost more of a philosophical question
@steveclarke62573 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the conclusions made, it depends upon the speed of the central powers victory. If this happens before 1917 he is correct there is no US involvement, however if there is still unrestricted submarine warfare the US still enters in 1917. This effects the war outcome results for Germany, I'm not sure they could do anything to force terms on the British Empire if the US has entered the war, the US would probably see the British as a naval counter balance to Germany, and if you can't get out of the North sea I can't see how you can have much of a colonial empire. So would end up with something like a rerun of the Napoleonic period, Germany running the contenent (replacing Imperial France) and the US and British empire controlling the oceans.
@sartanawillpay79773 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the Germans would have had a difficult time forcing any terms on the British Empire that threatened its overseas possessions whether the US entered the war or not. If Britain wanted it could have continued a naval blockade and German High Seas fleet may not be able to challenge it for years (if ever). The British were protected by channel and their control of the sea and would not have to accept peace on humiliating terms.

4:45 I dont know about other nations, but Czecho-Slovakia elected communist government (I think it was one of the biggest communist victories in elections after WW2). Czechoslovaks voted for KSČ (Communist party of Czechoslovakia), because the democrats/liberals were seen as "traitors" and pro-western politicians (they accepted Munich Agreement and only Soviet Union supported Czecho-Slovakia). Also in WW2 most of Czecho-Slovakia was liberated by Soviets. Czecho-Slovakia also nearly became independent from Soviet sphere in 1948, because "democratic" politicians resigned and they expected that our president would refuse their resignation - that would mean new elections and KSČ would have lost, but president accepted their resignation and KSČ took all power in Czecho-Slovakia.

Being Australian, I'm curious where we'd be if Germany won / England never got involved. I know in that alternate history I wouldn't have been born, my great grandfather met his British wife during the war. Also Australia got a lot of refugees after both wars which shaped our culture.
@fabianmichaelgockner59883 жыл бұрын
Australia most likely would be unharmed in regards of losing power and control of land. So the chances that it might have a independent Government, that would ignore Britains rules and orders, was more likely. If you Hearts of Iron 4 "Kaiserreich" than Australia would have a influx of refugees, not only as humans but also as battleships any kind of, because due the defeat the british navy was in Kaiserreich in full dissaray and fled to former Commonwealth Colonies, giving them slightly more powerful navy strength to keep their territories under control. Also the possibility that you would have born, doesn't mean at all that it needed to happen right now like with your parents. Maybe your father might found your mother much later anyway in any other way of Convenience. (Sorry for bad English, I am German.)

I think the biggest visible difference would be seen in the Middle East. With a predictable collapse of the Ottoman Empire there would be struggle, wars and horrible things, but a likely outcome would be more natural borders in the end of the resulting states, along ethnic lines, not artificial lines drawn on a map. As briefly mentioned, Kurds for example getting their own nation. The most important difference though would be: No foreign troops in occupation. Much of today terrorism stems from the foreign occupation of major parts in the Middle East by western troops. Mostly UK (who drew the borders) and USA (later on). The west would have to face the Middle East on a more equal footing instead of being colonial masters (in essence). It could even be more friendly to the German Empire if (and thats speculative) they would be wise enough to offer assistance in new nations forming. Ofc they might as well do the UK thing and try to grab as much as possible for that sweet oil and the end result the same, with Germany being the big Satan for muslim countries instead of the USA; but with more natural breakup of the Ottomans, chances are bigger for a more peaceful relationship between the west and the Middle East.

I don't agree with your assessment. While indeed both the German and Royal Navy battlefleets where mostly designed around operations in the North Sea and the North Atlantic, the Royal Navy was able to refuel and restock virtually all over the world: Gibraltar, Jamaica, Malta, Suez, Africa colonies, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Falklands station, Canada, Japan (as an ally) and many many more I am forgetting. Furthermore their Battlecruiser and Cruiser force was very much tailored for colonial station keeping and trade-protection / raiding. The German navy suffered heavily almost from the start of the war. Japan took control of their possessions in South East Asia, HMAS Australia was more than powerful enough to threaten their entire Asia squadron and without refueling opportunities, the German cruiser forces had no other way to disperse and life of raiding or to be taken out by the Battlecruiser units hunting them (Battle of the Falklands). The german battlefleet strategy acknowledged this disparity, and was mostly designed as a fleet in being, and primarily sortieing out in attempt to catch and destroy parts of the British fleets in ambushes. Lack of radio discipline and because the RN had broken their code, made those attempts a futile mission, regardless to how badly Beatty could foul good plans. Germany winning WW1 would help german's colonial ambitions, but the UK was far from powerless, especially so long it didn't got herself tempted on fighting Germany on the European mainland. And with the new situation, the UK has all the incentive to try to slow down German ambition. Even a separate naval war against Germany isn't off the table. In all other cases, Germany has hardly a chance without some major naval or colonial power switching sides. Italy betraying the Central Powers takes out the most likely candidate.

i think its important to remember that the war between japan china and usa would likely not happen, but the usa would continue industrializing faster than germany and its allies. USAs fleet would be dominant over time.

I think Austria-Hungary would not have dissolved. That happened because the army was dissolving and the war situation was bad. Politicians broke Austria-Hungary appart, not the people. There were plans to create a federal state under Karl l.

i would assume that a coalition between UK and Germany would be more probably than colonial conflict. the aristoratic ties were close enough and i think it would come down to more a rivalry. especially considering a new common enemy: socialist france.

I keep hearing you say that “communism is stateless” and so the Russians werent really communist. They absolutely were as Marx stated that communism can only be achieved through a dictatorship of the proles who will collectivise production and then release governance to the individual (he didn’t say what this meant or would look like or how to get there). That’s what the Soviet Union was doing. They were a dictatorship of the proles going through the collectivisation of production. They were real communists and the Soviet Union was communist.

For me personally I don't see this MiddleAfrica being created, with the British still having the most powerful of the fleet in the world the Germans wouldn't have the ability to negotiate for such massive areas of Africa with no actual ability to take them by force. I'm sure they would be able to take some French territory but not the big MiddleAfrica as described here. I've always found it weird that Britain become closer with France and Russia when it seems like Germany is a more natural ally, both are a Germanic people and both ruled by the same family. Then again the best ally for Britain was the USA as they speak the same language both 'democracies' and both have different spheres of influence, US has the Americas and Britain has the rest of the world.

During the Napoleonic wars Britain fought on regardless of what happened on the continent. They would not necessarily have done this had Germany defeated France, but they certainly would not permit Germany to threaten their Empire overseas nor could the Germans force this given the power of the Royal Navy. Germany wold probably have accepted British recognition of their conquests in Europe and be glad to call it a day.
@jamescarton17883 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Britain would not let them threaten the empire, but could accept German domination of Europe. However I think they would at any point support wars or uprisings to try rebalance Europe with multiple equal powers again.

I know this is off topic of the video above but I heard somewhere that after the civil war a just freed black woman knelt down in a church in front of former slave owners and as they were talking an old white haired man who turned out to be General Lee walked in next to the woman, knelt down and prayed beside her and I was wondering if that was true or just a rumor
@VloggingThroughHistory3 жыл бұрын
I dont know the details but yes something like that happened between Lee and a recently freed slave in church.
