something must be wrong considering that the riot and Ersatzregierung was how long active ? just a few hours or less than a day. All that has not happened cause there was a huge delay in the communication with Wolfsschanze and Berlin for example whith the headquarter in Paris. Anyhow. British were so smart to go for war for Poland and did not even get anyway close to their goals. Quite the opposite happened. Sovietunion pushed the borders deep into the west. At the end a lot of casualties could have survived the war, most of the victims fell after the landings in June 1944.

If you are into hard/soft alternate history, I would recommend _1945_ by Robert Conroy. In the novel, War Minister Korechika Anami decided to support the Kyūjō Incident coup and placed Emperor Hirohito under "protective custody". This forced the United States to drop a third atomic bomb on the city of Kokura and then invade the island of Kyushu. The war ends when Japanese pro-peace officers assassinated Anami and restored Emperor Hirohito to power and sue for peace.

Depends on how ending C would've turned out. The Soviets committed untold atrocities against not only the Germans (minimum of 2 million women raped by the Soviet army, with Stalin's tacit approval) but the rest of Eastern Europe were brutally oppressed and massacred too, most of all the Poles. Remember: the Soviets and nazis invaded Poland together in 1939. It's a sadly underrepresented part of WW2, sometimes swept under the rug in the fear of marring the victory against the Axis. If the Allies managed to push the Soviets back to their own borders, a lot of this suffering would've been avoided, and we might not have gotten such a divided world during what in our timeline was the Cold War. (especially since the Soviets in this timeline don't gain access to nazi scientists and technological advancements like they did in our timeline, meaning the Allies retain the technological edge it had against the Soviets.) That said, there's a high likelyhood that the US would've been pushed to use atomic bombs against the Soviets, and it's impossible to imagine just how many casualties this extended war would've cost. Again, everything hinges on how that would've played out.

@@Bacontruffle The Soviet Union signed a non-agression pact with Germany only after it was clear that no one wanted to side with them against Germany (with the exception of Czechoslovakia, which Poland actually invaded together with Germany, so the Polish can't blame the Soviets for something they did aswell). The Soviet ruthlessness against the Germans/Axis stemmed from the need for retribution, unlike the German ruthlessness towards the Soviets stemming from their idea of racial superiority and purity and the fight against "judeo-bolshevism". The Soviets did rape, however it was illegal in the Red Army and it was punishable with death, Soldiers were regularly shot for such offenses, even when they did that to German women, but the officers usually "looked the other way" when it came to those, since they were German, the true enemies, no matter if they were civilians. Still, the Soviet war crimes and rule after the war are not comparable to the Nazi atrocities committed and planned. The Soviets may have killed more people overall, but the Soviets stayed in power for way longer than the Nazis, they Soviets also had a larger number of population under their control, ruled less industrialized nations/areas, so they were more prone to famine (be they man-made, natural, or both).

Uh, for a second there I thought yt unsubscribed me from you(not the case thankfully). Finally a sponsor I can wholeheartedly get behind - I've played sniper elite 1(up to half-way point) set in berlin iirc, finished v2(playing remastered version of it now) set in germany proper, finished nr3 set in north africa(customization started here), and soloed the zombie army trilogy(left4dead-esque spin-off of sniper elite), all on the maximum difficulty(the way it was meant to be played, and boy it's unforgiving if you miss! Headshots were my prefered target, no need to torment the poor saps on the other side of your scope). Game 4 was in italy, 5 in france, and resistance in vichy france perhaps(judging by the logo and new protagonist). Also, each of the games(not sure about the 1 tho) gave you a chance to snipe the big man(pardon, big bad) hitler himself(as dlc/side content). Lengthy digression aside, it appears none of the outcomes were that much better(option 3 is intriguing, for retaining the monarchy and immediate start of ww3), outcome nr2 sounds very familiar to what happened after the fall of (anything but)independent state of croatia(namely, remnants of the regime and regular soldiers(guilty and innocents alike) were hunted down like game(and equally brutally) long after the war ended).

Interesting thoughts, the trouble with most "what if" scenarios is the enormous forces at play, and what realistic changes could happen from the moment history diverged from our timeline. Had Hitler been remove from power in say, 1941, before the invasion of the Soviet Union, history would have played out very differently. Operation Valkyrie was a legitimate plan to use the Reserve Army to maintain control in the event of civil disorder, which Stauffenberg's group modified to allow them to try and take over. However, his group was just that, some conspirators. He wasn't a power player or competitor to Hitler, who could rally people to his cause. It seemed like he wanted armistice with the West and to keep their gains in the East, but had the coup succeeded he wouldn't have retained power for very long. Therefore the B or C option seem most probable; same war just different leaders facing only capitulation rather than armistice, or working out a deal with the West but still fighting the Soviets--it could very well have happened WWIII could have started as Patton was notorious for thinking we should have been fighting them, but with all sides drained or devasted and not knowing about the coming Cold War they would have opted for peace. It would just be where the Soviets would be willing to stop with Germany. Seeing the NSDAP (the "N" word we all use seems to trigger KZbin's censor filter) turn into a years long post war terror operation is what many people would have expected, but the leaders themselves weren't fanatic proponents of their beliefs, just using a tool to an end. Himmler didn't manage the armies assigned to him after the coup very well and had tried to start peace talks in March 1945 when he saw the inevitable collapse, so option A of him leading a reign of terror was the last likely possibility.

Hitler messed up the defence with the battle of the bulge, and believing the Allies were going to invade Calais, so a more competent, non-ideological leader may have increased the length of the war, rather than shorten it

I think a more interesting what if involving Germany is what would have happened had Chamberlain said NO to the demands made during the Sudetenland crisis , and Germany was forced to invade a prepared Czechoslovakia that was on a war footing. At the time the German high command was prepared to overthrow the fuhrer as they saw him forcing the country into a war they just weren't prepared for. For example a good chunk of vehicles, artillery, and tanks used in the 1939 invasion of Poland came from Czech factories that were taken over intact following Chamberlain's agreement, so the military force brought to bare against the Czechs would be a shadow of what it went on to become.
