Today on Hearts of Iron 4 I'll be looking at a mod that asks what if HOI4 added ammo to the game? How will this change the strategy of conquest? Will this end in disaster?

We at Ultra Historical Mod have been playing around with this idea for a while. We currently count ammo into the production cost of equipment which works quite well, main issue with this specific mod is that it's global. So its not local as fuel and supply. You run out of it globally which is...meh.Cool idea nonetheless.

Mod looks good. I'll give it a try. Ammo shortages had a big effect on the war especially for Germany so very realistic. Always made no sense to me that every rifle made in HOI4 seems to come with every round that rifle will ever need to fire included.

I mean to be fair have you looked at how many guns you lost each battle? I always thought that meant infantry equipment was also guns, so losing a crap ton of equipment doesn't necessarily meant guns but also ammo. Idk, never bothered me too much to be honest lmao

I guess the developer just wanted to get the idea rolling, not really make it working. But tbh, it would be a interesting mechanic. Just use military factories tho and make it a item like guns. It would definitely balance curbstomping as you cannot just constantly let your entire army battelplan but only a few units at a time.

This was my thought on how to do it, you make ammo an equipment type that has a very high attrition rate in combat (not sure if low reliability would do this correctly, and you'd probably want some out of combat attrition since obviously ammo can get damaged or lost in storage/transport). You could then even split it into different ammo types for different equipment types. This would preclude it affecting Navy and Air though. I'm sure some madlad would want to find a way to have to match the ammo type to the equipment type firing it too.

It already is covered by artillery production itself. Or do you really think that you need 5 factories full of workers to produce a single ZiS-3 a day and that soldiers on the frontline somehow burn down a dozen artillery pieces daily to warm themselves even if there are no losses(which means that guns aren't lost in combat or accident)?

Part of the reason the Congo experienced the atrocities it did was to control ammunition spent. At one time, the severed hand of the person you shot/killed needed to be exchanged for more bullets (I think the idea was to discourage soldiers from getting bored and shooting target practice) but one result was the taking of innocent folks hands to exchange for ammunition. Keep your ammo in good supply!

close enough, basically they had a problem with garrisons supplementing pay by hunting with army bullets, so you needed a hand to explain a spent bullet (original idea was meant to be a hand of rebelling slave that you'd had to use the bullet to deal with) well many soldiers would hunt, then cut off some slaves hand for some reason or another (usually missing very high rubber quotas). This led to some tribes raiding other tribes to cut off their hands to "pay" the garrisons for missed quotas, effectivly creating a really messed up hand-backed economy.

This is pretty neat that it tracks it like oil. Thought I'm not sure I understand the point of a new factory type and depots, seems like they'll just slow down the game. Besides, ammunition production is already part of the game under infantry equipment, cause that's not just rifles at all, its uniforms, shovels, ammo, etc. and supply depots already present could do the same? That said, who knows how it's implemented under the hood though, those new buildings could be what allows the mod to track the ammo.

I think the separate factory is probably because of technical limtation, not being able to tie an equipment produced with the tracking system but I'm not sure. I'm not a fan of that either. The idea of depots is nice though, deciding when/how much to stockpile ammo (just like fuel) seems a big part of the idea. Tanks, vehicles and ships used to have the "everything included" idea using oil for production as well, but changing it to spending fuel during combat made it much better, I also think would be good for ammo as well

2:22 they are probably being supplied since not all divisions in the game start out perfectly armed. just like having a deficit of equipment before starting in the game, that's probably how it works. I played the mod before.

Actually if Paradox added ammo into the game, it could maybe partially solve the unbelieveable spamming of the AI troops. Keeping the number of troops somehow realistic and not making scenarios like 20 UK divisions in Bergen or over 800 US divisions.

Infantry kit already covers the cost of WHOLE kit. Same goes for artillery, planes and so on. Clutter won't improve neither the game, nor AI.

Idk, wanna try out Earth 1899? Sure it has just one nation with a unique focus tree, but i think it is good overall, even though on a bit of a need of a rework. Also the date change to 1899 and the resulting tech removals make wars much more brutal. I mean, the transition to 1899 is far from finished, but is coming. Also may i mention that the old world has tons of monarchies and the one with the focus tree is the United Empire of America with an absolute monarchy path.

Ah yes, one more of those "let's add another important part in supply system of war effort that isn't thought about by developers and without which the whole war would stop - toilet paper!". At first these mods seemed cool, but then I realized that they're just pointless clutter made for creator to get brownie award for being "more historically accurate and realistic then the rest of the plebs". Artillery production already covers ammo for it, infantry kit production already covers ammo, uniform and the rest of the kit, supplies already covers radios, medics and so on. And supply covers supplying it. Adding more clutter doesn't make game better:(

I don't think ammo should be a thing since it is already part of the infantry equipment, when you train units and they lose some guns, it's not that everyone's snapping their guns in half, it's that you're spending bullet. Adding bullet into the game is just like adding shovel or medkit to replace the support equipment, it add nothing and make it more tedious for country with low factory size.
