The death of Iroh's son Lu Ten and the subsequent events that followed arguably changed the course of the Fire Nation forever. Lu Ten's death sent Iroh into a spiral and led to Ozai and Ursa's poisoning of Firelord Azulon + the near sacrifice of Zuko. Unpopular opinion, but if Iroh didn’t go through all the pain he did with Lu-Ten and his father passing away he wouldn’t have become the wise Iroh we love on Avatar. He probably would’ve been more dangerous than Ozai because he was a seasoned general, a skilled tactician, and moreover he was wiser than Ozai, he wouldn’t have sent a child to do a mans job (hunt the avatar).

I can imagine Ozai saying this, “I must capture the avatar to restore my honor!” Let’s say Ozai is sent to find the avatar, I do t think he would go through Zuko’s arc because I see Ozai as even more obsessed with his “honor” than Zuko will ever be. I’m just saying, he would’ve done anything to “capture the avatar.” Maybe Avatar Studios could do a hypothetical situation like this. It would be cool to see an older more dangerous Zuko. @@marche800 while that is true, he also wouldnt have lost his connection to the Avatar state, and started the fight with a handicap. He also probably would have been taught how to use the Avatar state, as tje Air Nomads knew war was coming, which was the whole reason for the change that caused him to run away. As he had already mastered airbending, its likely he would already be with the waterbenders when the fire nation attacked his people (which could lead to him continuing his training, or chasing after the fire nation right away). Either way, the fight wouldnt go the same because he could glow it up right from the start, and more importantly, may not have had the maturity to spare the fire lord this time, and certainly not the knowhow to take his bending.

Now, if he was like that before his son was killed, we dont know. He was attempting to conquer Ba Sing Se. But I feel he'd be better than Sozin.

Honestly, the idea of Fire Lord Iroh inviting the Avatar for a tense, eerily amiable cup of tea is far more menacing than Ozai's dominating display of power. His pouring of a cup of ginseng tea for Aang, a favorite of his to share with his greatest enemy, shows a wise and friendly exterior all the more disturbing for knowing what he's capable of.

Wait, didn't Iroh join White Lotus *after* he lost his son? I always assumed that was the case, as (I believe) White Lotus would not accept somebody that... fearsome, powerful and scary, all at the same time? I mean, we only know how Iroh behaved after he lost his son. I'd imagine that his previous personality was much more like Ozai (they did grew up together and to be honest, Zuko and Azula weren't *that* different from each other at the beginning of ATLA - both were power hungry and wanting to prove themselves). Same with meeting the last dragons - I though he did that after joining White Lotus, and that the organizations teachings were the reason he left the dragons in peace.

I feel Iroh would not only challenge Ozai for the throne but if he won the duel he would immediately try to find Ursa and welcome her back to the capital so she could be with her kids, especially if he had just lost his son like in the original timeline.

one of the most memorable moments with iroh is when zuko asks him to defeat ozai and iroh doesn't even discount the possibility of beat ozai, but he refuses because the world would only see it as brother killing brother, and no justice would come of it.

One thing I love about general iroh, he is a peaceful , calm, loving man , what I love most about him is that ,he takes everyday as it’s comes. his days weren’t planned he is just excited about everyday that’s comes and he makes it count and that’s how to leave your best life never take life too seriously it’s get better and less tensed .
