I believe that Dean Thomas would have filled Ron's role as originally the trio was meant to be a quartet with Dean Thomas

@austinnighteyes1900 No offense, but Neville is not the "true Chosen One". He was an option for Voldemort, yes, but ultimately Harry was the one who Voldemort went after and marked.

I will say, if Ron was killed in book 4/5, then the movie writers wouldn’t have gotten away with assassinating Ron’s character prior to book 4. They would have given him the “if you want to kill Harry you’ll have to kill us too” line and they would have had him stick up for Hermione even more. They would have had more respect for his character.

I mean - the resurrection of Voldemort at the end of Goblet of Fire as it stands is arguably the darkest and most horrifying scene of the entire franchise. Add to it Wormtail murdering Ron Weasely after the line "kill the spare," within the very same scene, and we are presented with a book and ongoing series that could never continue under Scholastic. The series would have attracted an entirely new audience going forward while also alienating much of its already established fanbase. Rowling made the right call by having the trio survive.

Interesting question: Without Ron, who would Harry go on the Horcrux Hunt with, assuming of course Harry let someone else in on the Hocrux secret? Just Hermione? Or would he (& Hermione) bring someone else? Neville? Ginny? Luna? Lupin? Can't be Sirius cause he's already dead . . . unless he wasn't in this scenario?? I honestly don't know, but it IS interesting to think about . . .

It was Order of the Phoenix, not Goblet of Fire. She talked about in her sit down with Radcliffe. That’s why it took her so long to write that book. I also disagree about the Weasley’s, I don’t think they would want anything to do with Harry.

The Weasley’s knew how important he was to Ron, and at this point they’re in the order already so I don’t see them not at least coming to a semi understanding that this was always a possibility. Coming to an understanding that it was not Harry’s fault.

@@maiawatson6557 An understanding that their 15 year old son could have possibly been killed? They would have still been part of the fight but still distanced themselves from Harry.

@@RJMiller73 I thought it was while writing order of the phoenix that she considered killing arthur but then decided against it because that would make ron half harry and that's why she killed sirius instead.

Like you said - I don't think this franchise would have been nearly as successful or as fun to read if Ron had been killed off in Goblet of Fire. We have to remember that the first three books established the series as children's novels, so while the later books certainly did get darker and presented higher stakes, none of the trio could have been killed off any sooner than the end of book 6. I think it worked out for the best that the entire trio survived.

I feel like killing him in the last book would give not enough time to mourn his death mabey save Dumbledore for the last book and kill Ron in the astronomy tower

It wouldn't have been a good idea for the story or the success of the it at all. Everyone loves Ron (at least those who have read the books, the movies kind of made Ron unlikeable), Harry loves Ron. And without Ron, Harry just simply can't function. Ron is his mate. And without Ron, Harry only has Hermione, who would also be in grieving along with Harry. Actually, Harry would have been in grieving the whole rest of the books. And that would have just been too angsty. So, JK Rowling not killing off Ron was an extremely good idea.

There is a way to ramp up tension even higher. Just have Harry fall onto the Portkey before he could get to Ron. Then, at the final battle, Voldemort is there with an Inferius made from Ron's body and Harry has to stop Inferius!Ron before he can get to the Noseless One.

I think she also said that if Ron died, she would've paired Hermione and Fred up. So, we would've had an alive Fred. Anyways, I think the original plot made a lot of sense.

I think if Ron did die then Cedric would have probably been part of the Trio. I mean we would probably get to see more of the Hufflepuff House and the members in it. I don't have an issue of Hermione X Harry ship if they did get together or Harry & Ginny getting close from Ron's death

personally, I think it would've been Ginny. I doubt JK would've taken Cedric to be a part of the trio since he would've been introduced in the same book as Ron died. So Cedric would feel like a replacement only set up so there's a trio again, I think fans would've hated him and the books would've lost a lot of the quality they had

Personally I wouldn’t have wanted any trio at all. To replace Ron is just cheap and just dashes on his character. Ron was the perfect balance of the group. Harry relied on Ron to lighten the mood, he was his best friend, the person who showed him the Wizarding world. Hermoine loved Ron. Without Ron, Harry and Hermoine would be incomplete and if Ron died I think it should be kept that way. To feel the effects of his loss.

I don't think he would feel a desire to stay behind. As SmartyPants said, I think that Ron would just come full circle with the "kill the spare" comment.

He would have been in the circle of the “people who loved Harry” when Harry used the resurrection stone before his sacrifice in the last book.

Book 5 is the charm. Ron dieing instread of Sirius would have kicked off the war that was supposed to happened afterward in a maximum. Rowling made the mistake in Book 6 to try to get back to the "mysteries of the Book" style when the book was predestend for a training arc book. Harry being finally properly trained by Sirius and Dumbledore while learning about the Horcruxe too. Hermione evenly invested and getting closer to Harry then ever (in my version they would end up together) but may that as it be. Dumbledore still dies the way he does and marks the war as lost for the good side. Book 7 draws then a picture of the wizarding world of a Voldemort that won the war in all his horror, till Harry and the Order (with an alive Sirius with them on the hunt) emerge and kill Voldemort with more skill than and lame Expeliarmus.
