Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to one of my craziest video ideas. If Nikon would do it, the F7 would be a camera that's sure to redefine the way we capture moments. Imagine if Nikon had taken their iconic F series to the next level, blending classic design with cutting-edge technology. In this video, I'll delve into the speculative world of photography and explore what the Nikon F7 might look like if it were a reality.
One idea is that Nikon may maintain their mirrorless form factor. Gone are the days of bulky DSLRs. The Nikon F7 could boast a compact, mirrorless design that's both ergonomic and stylish. It would be built to be the perfect companion for photographers on the go.
I also think it should have a gorgeous, high resolution display. The F7 should feature a state-of-the-art LCD display, providing real-time previews and enhancing your creative control. Imagine framing your shots with precision and reviewing them instantly in stunning detail - yet still maintaining that silky smooth film photography asthetic.
It should have groundbreaking professional controls and automatic functionality. The F7's automatic functions should be state of the art. Perhaps even including AI-powered system adapts to your shooting conditions, ensuring you get the perfect exposure and focus every time.
Just because it's a film camera doesn't mean that we still don't want some internet. Stay connected like never before. The F7 should feature built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing you to share your images and videos instantly with your smartphone or tablet.
Join me on this speculative journey as we envision what the Nikon F7 could be. While this camera may just exist in my mind right now (along with other not very useful things), it's exciting to think about the possibilities that lie ahead in the world of film photography. Perhaps one day, the Nikon F7 will become a reality, revolutionizing the way we capture our world.

I’d pre order the F7 right now. I’m in awe at how Nikon made so many MILLIONS of exquisitely well-crafted mechanical film cameras for 40 years. I bet there will be FM2s that still work fine 200 years from now.

I believe that with AI digital photos will become inadmissable in court due to manipulation. Therefore raw film nega might be the only way of getting concrete evidence. So we may see more film cameras yet.

Unless they develope a way of digitally imprinting manipulated images onto film, which sounds difficult but everything seems possible these days. It's tough to tell...

Just wanted to give you props for your consistency, and how you always leave in some of the outtakes. It’s hard as hell to sit down and talk to a Camera. Last weekend, after about 70 failed attempts, I threw my hands up in the air and walked away. It’s really freaking difficult to make KZbin videos.

Thank you so much! It really is tough. Doing one of these a week is brutal sometimes. Some weeks I have more time to work on the videos than others! When you see a mistake, I was rushing rushing rushing.

Nah, a F7 would be a D6, but with the sensor back being removable. User's choice of in-field swappable film or digital back. The body has to be based on a SLR body because a mirror box is necessary with the film back attached. There'd be no way to preview the image otherwise. The flange distance is too short with any of the mirrorless designs.

exactly, there is no way for a separate image sensor to be present within the optical path of mirrorless design, they can probably do it with an slr design but not mirrorless.
@alunchisholm481
@alunchisholm481 11 ай бұрын
it would be dumb to try, but - they could put the sensor on the front of the mechanical shutter, that has to be there - even on a mirrorless camera , and it's in the optical path. It would probably be an array of little sensors, because the shutter has a number of blades, and each with a corrective lens, so it would actually be in focus. Now, a digital back for my F4, (if it cost less than a full-frame digital camera) - i could go for that.
@alunchisholm481
@alunchisholm481 11 ай бұрын
or if you used an SLR with a Pellicle mirror (a transparent fixed mirror) you could put the sensor on the pentaprism, which would give an optical viewfinder AND allow live-view ( or remove the prism and use an EVF) ...... also they'd need to keep the F mount lenses in production.
@StevesFilmThoughts
@StevesFilmThoughts 4 ай бұрын
An SLR design would actually be ideal for the duel digital sensor/film capability. Put a full frame sensor where your focusing screen would be and your done. Digital view finder in place of a prism and a big screen on the back.

If they wanted to make another, id like to see them return more to their roots, something more F2 or F3 like. They were probably all yoh needed for a good film camera.
@helgeschneider4417
@helgeschneider4417 11 ай бұрын
You could theoretically solve the EVF issue by including a mirror-like mechanism. Or something along those lines that moves the sensor out of the way when you press the shutter button. A flip up mechanism would probably be too big for the short flange distance, but that would seem like the best way for me. Otherwise you're possibly sacrificing a lot of EVF quality. Especially in low light, since smartphone sensors don't tend to excel at that.
@helgeschneider4417
@helgeschneider4417 11 ай бұрын
Could be a sensor that fills the entire frame, but only has a resolution identical to that of the viewfinder. Would certainly save a lot of money and create great opportunity for low-light focusing and great lowlight EVF image quality.

If brands, including Nikon of course, came out with sequels for Leica's awesome Digital Modul R back from 2005-6 for their R8-R9 135 film reflex cameras, I would definitely jump on it. Having both film and digital in one rethought modern and reliable machine definitely would be something interesting.

Getting very complex! And I think you're right we don't buy cameras these days if they can't do video. Film is niche only photography camera. And fast frames per second is irrelevant because film is too expensive. Accurate AF however would be great but AF is done on sensor these days so I don't know how that translates to film. A film camera (only because there is digital now) has become a more contemplative exercise. The Leica M6 and M-A are like this

The mirrorless design with film wouldn't work. You wouldn't get the correct FOV of 35mm film with a smaller sensor if its looking TTL. Now how would that sensor move out of the way? Would it slap up like a mirror like in the sony hybrid DSLRs? Then I think at that point might as well just put a mirror back in because that's what Nikon is used to. On top of this the Z mount has a flange distance of 16mm so you would have to fit all of this inbetween the film and the lens. Even if you could fit that all in there, there would have to be a complex mechanism that moves the sensor out of the way and moves the film forward so that it's the right flange distance for correct focus and then move the sensor back in place at the correct distance for preview. Another option would be an optical viewfinder but that wouldn't be in line with Nikon's brand and would become something like a fuji x-pro with a camera back. Lastly you could put a sensor and lens somewhere else on the body but it would be a smaller sensor, so incorrect DOF preview and would be of lower quality so not good enough for pros. Also DX coding says heaps about the film and more than you ever would need the camera to know. Watch technology connections video. I think if a F7 did come into fruition it would be a D850 with a film back hopefully with that colour LCD screen like on the the X-pro 3 for metadata, quartzdate and film stock because that would be cool and would be the only upgrade from the F6 so probably making it pointless. Anyway that's my 2 cents lol.

I dont think they would use the z9 as the base. More than likely they would do the same as the did for the f6. They would take the d850 or d6 and turn it into a film camera. Nikon making a new film camera is a stretch to begin with, but i really dont see them going through all the trouble to reinvent the body for such a small market. Interesting though

An mirrorless film camera design and up in a TLR or rangefinder design (regardless whether being an optical or electronic driven viewfinder). And so with all the pros and cons of these designs compared to a SLR. The only new thing being doable today is with and SLR design to have no more an optical focusing screen and viewfinder but an electronic one instead. So to say you have traditional SLR, but where the focusing screen was you have a sensor (and everything else of a mirrorless camera) instead. Or you change the order: Via mirror you expose the film and without the sensor. but this end up in a strange body design ....;-) Or you need a sliding mechanism like for large format camera... But in that case you loose speed in shooting.for and between exposures. In sum: - Forget the idea of a mirrorless design of a fullframe or medium format camera for film. Bur: - A SLR design with electronic sensor instead of the focusing screen could be an interesting camera with many benefits from the mirrorless camera design. Anyhow, the hard bad fact for those having jumped on mirrorless lenses already: - Mirrorless lenses will never be usable for a film (SLR). They are "just" good for digital mirrorless or those mentioned TLR & rangefinder designs. - SLR/DSLR lenses are good for any us with film and digital, Mirror, mirrorless, and even other brands mirrorless.

I think mirrorless design can't backport to make film camera because it isn't make sense. EVF and live screen has been design to produce the exact image appear on the sensor, and you can't do that on film. The closest thing to implement EVF with that design I can think of is the Sony SLT design but it has mirror box so they should go back to SLR design instead. I think if Nikon really want to produce F7, if it released according to the usual schedule that is once every 8 years, it should get released back in 2012 with focus system of Nikon D3/D4 (MultiCAM 3500); if it get released today it should be similar to D6 overall, and if it get released in the future where all Nikon SLR discontinued, they're more likely to make the camera focus like autofocus rangefinder or compact camera to make them compatible with Z lenses which have flank distance too short to use with SLR design again or have some kind of autofocus sensor that will be dealt with elsewhere in the camera without dealing with additional component that have the camera to be fatter. But to be honest, I don't think it make sense to make camera like that.

Hmm, I think KZbin flagged my last comment as spam... I was also going to say, there are dx numbers in addition to dx codes. It's the six-digit number under the barcode on the side of the film cassette. This has identifying info about the manufacturer and film stock. There's a Wikipedia article about dx numbers that has more info including a link to a database where you can search by these numbers.

Nikon is a totally different kind of company. Leica is a privately held company that can do whatever they want and also have the premium brand following of enthusiasts they know will buy up small batches of cameras no matter how much they cost. Nikon is publicly traded and could never justify to shareholders the R&D commitment and manufacturing expense for a new flagship camera that there's no professional market for. I could see them putting out something more basic. Maybe even a retro point and shoot or rangefinder that would appeal to the kids getting into film.

As an old fart, I prefer the challenge of using (mostly) fully mechanical film cameras. Your F7 dream would be little more than any other high-end digital product whereby there are so many options/adjustments/settings which would render the camera more of an optical computer. Most people with these digital masterpieces just use the 'auto' function anyway. Not for me - I'll stick with my trusty old F2 thankyou very much so if I f**k it up, I'll know it's my own photographic ineptitude and not some silicone diode.

I don't see how.. you can't fit an SLR assembly within the flange distance of Z-mount lenses and you can't have an analog through-the-lens viewfinder without a mirror box. I don't think you could couple a rangefinder to Z-mount lenses either, so the only option left would be like an autofocus point-and-shoot which doesn't really make sense with the prices of Z-mount glass
