@@PrimarchRoboleonFrenchyman I think I could agree on this in a sense since... They will not be called "Freak Twins/Miya Twins" if one is totally lack in skill and the other one is shining.. Osamu is a well balanced player in their own team, Aran complimented Osamu for being a better overall player than Atsumu but concludes that Atsumu has the greater drive and obsession, thus resulting Atsumu to reach greater heights.. But, it should be noted that... Osamu's overall skill is also inferior to Hoshiumi, Oikawa/Atsumu, Aran and even Suna cause he is not a player that is focused on a single position.. Or he is overshadowed by Aran in spiking since Aran is one of the top 5 best spikers..

Not necessarily true. Remember rivals don't only have to be on the other side of the net. The person that challenges you to constantly up your game could be your teammate. I had someone like that. An upperclassman who called me out when I was slacking or challenged me to work on myself. My days were like school volleyball, club volleyball, provincials, and every spare minute in between, and all because I didn't want to lose to her. I miss those days. But can totally understand the friend aspect. Most, if not all of Kitagawa Daiichi talented players ended up at Seijoh. Hell, even Kageyama was invited, but he too wanted to beat tough opponents, hence his reason for going to Karasuno. It's still fun to imagine though. But you can't deny the pleasure one gets from the Iwaoi tandem.

no, and hear me out why. They had/have a star setter with Semi. They purposely benched him because he didnt played Washijos way. His way was to build the team around Wakatoshi, making him the center of the team and the star player. When Semi got subbed in in Set 2 against Karasuno, he sets to Goshiki instead of Ushijima. Ushijima wants every ball because he wants to win every time and he can win by himself but all the other player lack behind, thats why Karasuno beat Shiratorizawa, because they have the overall better team except for Ushijima, Goshiki and maybe Tendo but you can argue on Tendo vs Tsukki. If Oikawa joined Shiratorizawa he wouldnt nearly be as good as he is on Seijoh, and more important, he would be on the bench

It’s also worth noting that if Oikawa went to Shiratorizawa, Iwaizumi would likely be there too; so Shiratorizawa would not just gain a huge upgrade from Shirabu, but also another strong wing spiker who we see is not only good at attack, but also amazing at receiving if what we saw from Karasuno vs Seijoh S2 was any indication. Shiratorizawa would not just be unstoppable, but immovable too.

But that would also be really difficult to imagine as Kageyama hasn't even peaked yet and neither has any of the other players on Japan's national roster. when I started watching the series, my thoughts on the teams were that they're obviously a kind of a family. but in season 3 this didn't happen to me. I felt like instead of a family they were a bunch of guys who join a sort of a dictatorship by they own will and hoping to fullfill expectations not because they want to achieve them by their own, but to make proud washijo. I think he has a LOT to do with the dynamics of shiratorizawa team (blame), the way he perceived the volleyball world around him when he was younger, you can see that reflected on his attitude towards hinata at the beginning of season 4, I hated him for that. because of this goal in washijo mindset, shirabu and the others can't grow or develop the skills they were supposed to, because they are so committed to feed the chart of goals of ushijima, even he says it! he says to kags and hinata "we don't need a setter who doesn't focus on the as" I mean, how ridiculous this can be? they don't understand what a team is, they are just like servants, and poor goshiki thinks he has the best references to grow and become stronger... I say poor goshiki cause my thoughts on him are "you should go to aoba johsai" where you can find teammates that teach you for real how a good environment can make such great things for you. about fukurodani, I think they have great players, they don't stand out cause their labor is to be pillars of bokuto the way he is for the whole team since he is indeed better than his team mates, but you see, bokuto wants recognition with this team, not on his own, he is humble and stronger and recognizes the force and vitality in other players when he sees it (not like wakatoshi saying they cannot make it if the grow from concrete) and akaashi is certainly a good setter, even if he has some trouble we the overthinkers have sometimes. but again, even nekoma, they are different kind of families (kuroo says sth about it to lev when he still wanted to do things on their own without considering the others members) maybe because of all these things I said, I never liked shiratorizawa, and I'm so glad oikawa had his pride, for me is not worthless at all, he understood the power of teams and that could never ever matched with wakatoshi playing style.

Oikawa is my favorite and yeah, I firmly believe that a Shiratorizawa team with Oikawa as a setter will allow them to conquer Japan, even matching up with the likes of Itachiyama and Inarizaki. I firmly believe that the foundation of a powerful volleyball team (even in real life) relies on a powerful spiker and setter combo. If you have a powerful spiker with an amazing setter, you are kind of guaranteed to become a strong ass team. We all know that Itachiyama is an insanely powerful team because they have a top 3 spiker in Sakusa and a setter who won the Best Setter Award in the Junior Olympics in Tsukasa, implying that their team has the services of a top-tier setter. Same goes for Inarizaki with a top-tier setter in Atsumu (who is arguably the best setter in the series) with a top 5 spiker in Ojiro. Adding Oikawa (whom I consider a top 5 setter in Japan) to Shiratorizawa with Ushijima creates a powerful spiker-setter tandem that can match up with Itachiyama's Sakusa-Tsukasa and Inarizaki's Atsumu-Ojiro. Combining Ushijima's insane offensive repertoire with Oikawa's floor general-type abilites, leadership and playmaking that elevates the play of his teammates will surely allow Shiratorizawa to remain at the top 5 of Japan at the least. P.S. imagine if Ushijima was the one Oikawa tossed to at the near-end of the Seijoh-Karasuno match, it would have probably been the worst case scenario for Karasuno.

to be fair, oikawa being on shiratorizawa would've meant they COULD fight for the nationals. could they? that's subjective. as we get to know later on in the manga (spoilers from now) itachiyama's captain and setter was awarded the best setter in the junior olympic tournament so we are seeing a pair in their captain/sakusa that can be even better (subjective) than atsumu/aran and oikawa/ushijima. on top of that, could they beat inarizaki? ushijima is better than aran but atsumu would easily make up the difference and osamu i'd say at this point is good as goshiki. I'd personally think inarizaki would beat them as it'd come down to the setter and atsumu is regarded the best setter in the nation but it'd be a close game and anyone can win (and therefore subjective). another thing we need to consider is how good hoshiumi is as this is where things truly become subjective. despite not being a "top 5 ace", his only weakness is his height. kamomedai is said to be one of the best blockers in the country and having hoshiumi, who can do everything, would give them a chance to stop ushiwaka and counter with hoshiumi. infact, this game would've pushed hoshiumi since he'd be facing ushijima. he'd have this attitude of "he's your ace? let me show you what it means to be an ace". he'd wanna prove badly how his height is not gonna stop him and that his height isn't a sign of incompetence. i perosonally think shiratorizawa with oikawa would beat them, but it'd be 50/50 as well since hoshiumi is one of the best spikers out there. as to your point about oikawa lacking satisfaction/motivation, you could also say seeing atsumu would push oikawa further. seeing kageyama pushed him, what if he saw atsumu and his selfless and demanding sets in the flesh? He'd truly understand where his ceiling is and would push him to be even better. yes, you're right in that he'd not feel satisfied to win with shiratorizawa but he'd have found a brand new motivation and a new rival in miya atsumu, the same way it pushed kageyama. lastly, all this is based on the assumption that washijou sensei will let oikawa be himself. that's highly unlikely though since washijou sensei made shirabu the setter even though semi was the better and more talented setter. he'd have no issue in benching oikawa as well. this would've stifled oikawa's growth and he'd not have been as good as he is now. and if this is the case, both inarizaki and kamomedai would stop shiratorizawa hard. in the manga, there's a panel where tendou says how annoying rintaro's spikes are which means they faced and lost to inarizaki (since inarizaki only lost to itachiyama).

But when it comes to his setters, it doesn't matter whether u set well or set bad, you should set it to ushijima. He has a simple ideology, strength. That's why ushijima doesn't receive serves, his job is to spike and the setter's job is to set it to him. Ofcourse u can't always set it to him, that's why washijou sensei prefers spikers who are tall and strong. This ideology makes sense since he's a highschool coach.

you're underestimating oikawa too much, first and foremost I think that atsumu is actually the better setter/server between them and more flashy but I think that Oikawa is more consistent than Atsumu, plus he is a far better team player than Atsumu. Their skills are not that far, only I can think of why Oikawa never won the best setter award in the nation is because he never made it to Nationals before because of Ushijima but if he had ever went to Nationals atleast once or twice since junior high, he would probably win the best setter award atleast once.
@angeloacuna7819

@@angeloacuna7819 underestimating? Dude Atsumu got called to an all japan training camp along with sakusa, hoshiumi and kageyama. You don't get called to those things unless you're consistent and a team player. Furudate sensei used both of them as a reference point for kageyama, oikawa being the benchmark that kageyama should meet and Atsumu being the true potential/ceiling for kageyama. Atsumu got a standing ovation from ukai sensei. Sure oikawa had a very flashy and difficult set to iwaizumi in the last game but Atsumu did those sort of things throughout the inarizaki match, like the set from a direct block to osamu which gave osamu the option to spike or set it to aran(I'm talking about the rally where hinata pulls the clutch receive but karasuno loses a point anyway), or the set where aran messes up a receive and Atsumu converts his landing motion from a block to give a overhanded set to another spiker. And it's not like they invited only the players from teams at national tournaments to the youth camp. The broccoli head that was eating with kageyama at the camp was talking to kageyama about his school (one of the fukurodani group schools) losing in the finals and not making it to nationals (if I'm correct, so please read the manga if you wanna verify) so they were looking out for players that didn't make nationals meaning they would've known about oikawa but they didn't see in him what they saw in Atsumu or what they saw in itachiyama's setter.

Tooru was happy at Aoba Josai. If it was all about success then he would’ve chosen Shiratorizawa. No matter which path he chose, he strived for the same destination. He didn’t want to go to Shiratorizawa but if he did go, wouldn’t he feel as though he’s living a lie even if he did acquire a place at Nationals? While his efforts and skills were true, he probably would have felt empty each time he won. He did not regret choosing Aoba Josai but if he did choose Shiratorizawa, I feel like he would be regretful. He stood true to his values and I respect him so much for that. After all, not everyone is brave enough to stay true to their values and be honest with their emotions because of the pressure from society. People often say their goals achieved feel plastic because of this. While they may have achieved their goals, they don’t feel accomplished; maybe simply because they didn’t stay true to who they are and what they really wanted. And some things are just not about the result but rather the process. No matter what others would say, staying true to your values and following a path you believe is right for you would bring success to you if you try enough. Sure, sometimes the path you choose might not be easy but it only makes the victory worth more.

Would Oikawa have developed to have his diversity of talent if he already had 1 great weapon? It might have made Oikawa more reliant on 1 dominant weapon rather than just improving Shiratoriwaza. Also if Karasuno plays Shiratorizawa twice, maybe they get far better than they did in the original timeline. If Karasuno has to play the Ushijima twice, they would have more experience. Maybe that means Karasuno's receiving gets vastly better over the break as well as the rest of their game.
@ebrimajallow3165

That would be assuming that if the first game was tight that Shiratorizawa would not improve as much as Karasuno would and instead of finding newer and better ways, they relatively stay stagnant, which, knowing Oikawa and Ushiwaka, is highly unlikely. And it's also assuming that if the first game was one sided, that Karasuno would make a rather unrealistic leap in ability to surpass Shiratorizawa. That's a lot of assumptions that wouldn't make all that much sense given the character we're given. Oikawa is not like Kageyama was earlier on who once told Hinata "I'll pass only who I have to to win". He is prideful and was already Ushiwaka's rival in middle school volleyball. Had they been on the same team, the most-likely assumption would be that his pride would make him seek other players (combined) as frequently as he would do Ushiwaka (like the video states) because that would give his team more unpredictability and success.

This is a thoughtful and excellent analysis! I think it’s worth noting that the hypothetical story you’ve outlined, which seems quite accurate, hinges on Oikawa having the freedom to change Shiratorizawa’s entire identity- and I’m not sure that would be the case. After all, his desire to conquer Ushijima himself wasn’t the only thing that prompted Oikawa to reject Shiratorizawa- it’s also Washijo’s foundational philosophy. I think the fact that Shirabu is on the court at all, when Shiratorizawa already has a setter with superior ability AND experience, is testament to this- Washijo CHOSE to put him there. Even if Oikawa had “gone to Shiratorizawa,” Washijo’s system might have crushed him. I honestly have no idea how much flexibility Oikawa’s superior skills would grant him when he’s actually on the court, if the ultimatum that he must “always pass to Ushijima if possible” remains unchanged. As Oikawa himself states, he believes that there is “nothing wrong with the volleyball I chose.” The philosophy he’s painstakingly created, born from his middle school conversation with Iwaizumi, is at complete odds with everything Shiratorizawa stands for. Like you said, he wants to win his way- and while that isn’t Ushijima’s way, it isn’t Washijo’s way, either.

It is funny how we don't even think If Shiratorizawa could beat Karasuno, we just move to If they could win national kjskajd Spoiler! In the manga, we see how Iwaizumi help Ushijima to change his 'simplistic' spike to that almost impossible to receive spike, so If we take that Oikawa was the brain of Seijoh he will certainly made that change sooner and would change a lot the way Shiratorizawa plays. I think that what would change everything would be the fact that Oikawa is so damn smart in a way that only he and Kenma are (I actually enjoy that sadistic way of play they have) so yeah, way to have an almost perfect team with just adding one member.

Actualllly shiratorizawa's whole thing is to blast through the blocks with ushijima. This is why shirabu, the virtually non-offensive setter starts over semi, the aggressive, better setter who wants to prove his worth. Oikawa who likes to use everyone AND do some hits himself probably wouldn't work well with the old coach's theme.

Late reply but just because Ushijima would likely get less tosses, this doesn’t mean Shiratorizawa’s offense would be weaker. Oikawa’s ability to use everyone on a team would allow Ushijima to conserve his stamina and play at his best for longer. I’m sure the coach would be okay with Ushijima scoring less, if the entire team is scoring more.

@@dominicl118 nah. the coach practically worships Ushijima. He said he wants pure, simple power that can crush any opponent they have. Washijo sees everything he wanted in Ushijima. I don't think he'd like it if the setter was not devoted to the ace. He likes players that are strong and relies on them. That's why Shiratorizawa was just "adding" while Karasuno was "multiplying". That's even the reason why he disliked Coach Ukai because his method of playing only wants the ace to be the star, not the entire team.

@@shinobutterfly3854 the coach would probably completely be against Oikawa's playstyle at first but in the long run, he would have to compromise. With Oikawa on the Shiratorizawa roster, he'd undoubtedly be the starting setter. In terms of setting, serves and overall play. There's no way the coach wouldn't utilise Oikawa even if it means he'd have to concede and change ideologies. Oikawa is too stubborn to compromise himself when it comes to his volleyball philosophy. Ushijima would probably come to support Oikawa considering how much he values Oikawa's skills as a player. So, in such a hypothetical situation, there would be upheaval in the team strategy in the beginning but it'd get sorted with time.

I like this! But I feel like a part was missing. As in the clash of ideologies between Washijo sensei being textbook and “archaic” with offensive plays and on the contrast of Oikawa’s reckless, efficient, combination offensive plays. Shiratorizawa with Oikawa would seem unbeatable. Even going against teams with a high blocking rate they’d still edge out a little better. The question is, what if they did go against a team like that who could stop Ushijima and was capable of marking players against the net. in the Block Miyagi was seeded in had Kamomedai as their match up for the Semi Finals. I would beg to differ and think that Kamomedai would win. If they have assertive “read blockers” with one of their gifted players at 6”7, don’t you think they could stop Ushijima and definitely catch up with Oikawa’s setting style. Kamomedai were stated to be Dateko but better with an U19 National ace. On their offense. They have Hoshiumi who can hit above Tendou’s guess blocking.They have an assertive blocker Hirugami and a 6”7 first year as one of their spikers. Alongside that, defensively they can keep up with long rallies and players like Ushijima and Goshiki. I can say Oikawa can get reckless like Atsumu does, If his players get blocked because of that and his choice of reckless combination plays with hardly any back up for their spikers getting blocked, Washijo is strict on his archaic plays and Oikawa might get subbed, Kamomedai might have that edge.

For me though, Oikawa is still the best, not only as a setter, but also someone who brings out the best on a player, and as a person. You should check out (spoilers) how he helped Hinata grow in the Brazil Arc. If he awoken Hinata *if Oikawa went to Karasuno* sooner, even if Kageyama went to Shiratorizawa, it will be a close fight, but Karasuno winning it because of Asahi, Tanaka, and Hinata are on their best shape. Not to mention Tsuki also awoken his spirit by himself and their ever-reliable libero Nishinoya, they are still bound to nationals and might also compete for the championships.

Probably, with oikawa, shiratorizawa could have won and gone to nationals(?), although personally I don't think they would have won... But I think that if he had done it, he wouldnt have that vision of team play that he has in seijoh (which is one of its strong points, especially since he's the setter). As we see, the ideals of shiratorizawa are individual strength. I never thought oikawa would fit in there. Not because it has a "bad" relationship with ushijima, but bc without seijoh, he would have continued to focus on improving his own skills without paying attention to the rest of the team. I think it would have been a bad decision for him, sorry ushijima

This duo is just scary, someone who knows the tendencies and where to put the ball each and every time to draw out a monster lefty in volleyball that can bounce over 3 man blocks while making sure that the blockers can’t read his sets would be scary. Think about it like this you have a inconsistent young outside know with Oikawa he will definitely be smarter and more confident in his skills. The red hair guy I forgot his name would get set every once in a while but it would be always a great set all the while he can also devour the opposing setter (middle blocker pressure hits different when they can read you without trying). A lefty who was destroying opponents with a middle school rated setter will know get Oikawa imagine if they do a slight tempo ball that’s scary to think abt. And every one else on Oikawa’s court having 100% confidence in their setter. Now Oikawa what people tend to forget is his preparation prior to matches understanding tendencies and making his opponents have to think more which sucks in a fast pace game. He would make sure that the teams defense is elite this Hypothetical Shiratorizawa team would practically destroy every team. Date Tech? How would they stop a power like Ushijima if he is a Asahi to the third he’d destroy the blockers or force them to soft block. Osamu’s team… how would they fight Oikawa’s preparation on the defensive side of the game he’d orchestrate his blockers to make sure they pick up most balls and serve to where they wouldn’t pass. And now Ushijimas serves would be more precise which is terrifying imagine a high schooler trying to pass a serve going probably 80+ kmh with a lefty spin going in seams and deep corners? This team would destroy anyone

If hinata ended up on nekoma the first thing they would see from his athletic skill wouldn't be the super attack kageyama sees, it would be how incredible he could be for defending with the kind of instincts he has. we see how hinata's ability to essentially read the entire court to predict where the ball was going is incredible for having literally just been learnt, with accurate preidctions that so far almost always seem to be dead on correct, kind of like guess blocking but for receiving. Nekoma would take that and polish it quicker, probably leaidng to a hinata who's not a monster for his spikes, but a mosnter for the fact that his existence (going by what we see of hinata in nationals and how he almost always manages to correctly read the game and predict the ball's movements) would essentially allow nekoma the freedom of a spiker with libero level skills (keeping in mind that hinata starting at nekoma means he'd have trained his amazing ability to read balls to receive them much faster than in canon). Also we have seen him in karasuno vs shiratorizawa. His speed allows him to dig up balls that are ridiculously far out of bounds and his instincts allow him to chase even a ball that seems like it's flying out of court faster than kenma can strategize. They fucking called him spiderman because of that wall stunt to dig up a ball my man's has untapped defensive potential come on nishinoya start taking him as your disciple already. And kenma is smart enough to recognize a hidden blade when he sees one. Nekoma, known purely for defending and connecting, could suddenly pull out hinata as a wild card with his sudden burst of speed and decoy work, and become a random burst of attacking power which the enemy team can't predict. Hinata would lose his freak quick yes, but what this means is simply that hinata's development would be backwards. He'd learn defensive moves with sloppier attacks before later on learning to refine and polish his attack with his speed and athleticty. By nationals, i imagine hinata would be a much more well rounded player, but one who can randomly boost the team's attacking power on a dime simply by switching from nekoma's defensive to hinata shouyou's erratic movements which are really only effective because he switches fast enough to catch the enemy blockers off guard. Kageyama would simply always be benched until he learns how to do teamwork, and without hinata, daichi and suga to smack the teamwork into him, he'd probabaly spend his first yeat benched andnjust trying to figure out how to work by relying on a team and not demanding from them. Kageyama without hinata would still be the same king of the court in middle school. At least imo. If he does start to understand teamwork before nationals.... I still think he'd be backup because he doesn't have a hinata to catch his super fast king's tosses and if put into the game would honestly probabaly still try it without hinata. we can't forget that a good chunk of kags' development comes from daichi literally smacking teammate into him after all.

@@rim7115 I mean that the coach did put shirabu in as the starting setter over semi. Even if semi was better at setting, because semi didn't play to serve the ace. And I just can't imagine oikawa commiting to this philosophy of serving just the ace. He is the type of player to get the best out of all his teammates and also seems to like to do some plays where he himself shines.

@@remyraloni8386 Great point. I think Oikawa would be a pinch server who never gets to set

Tbh it would be op if oikawa went to shiratorizawa, but for the sake of the anime I still think they would let Karasuno win. But it would be extremely close or something like that.
What if Kageyama went to Shiratorizawa?
