Part of the charm of Ray Harryhausen's Stop motion was the "uncanny valley" feel of his creations. For example, the metal giant Talos in the move "Jason and the Argonauts" was more scary because of it.
@martabachynsky8545 Жыл бұрын
I think it would be better to not smooth the Talos' movements because "robots" in movies look better with a jerky motion; it seems more realistic (for the lack of a better term).

Having grown up on films like these, and worshipping the ground Ray Harryhausen walked on, I find your enhancements give this work a less uncanny feel. In particular, the allosaurus’s tail is mesmerizing now, while it was “really neat” in the original. And the pterodactyls’ wings are now, well, beautiful. I agree with the commenter saying you should talk to the distros about commissioning fully modified films. I would buy them in 4K. Well done. 😊

RoboCop was not the last movie to have stop motion. There are still live action movies made containing stop motion and there were still a handful in the 90s.
@HArryvajonas2 жыл бұрын
@@calebclendenin7073 To his point, that time frame of movies was the last time big studios used stop motion as a substitute for practical effects. In a sense, it was the pinnacle of the technology being used in that manner in live action movies. Since that time, it has been utilized for more artistic expression, as opposed to simulating real world characters and objects. The mid 1990s was the end of its use in that regard and probably the high point in its technical application. Miniatures on the other hand, are still in regular use and I am always surprised when I find out they are used, because they are rarely noticeable in modern movies.

Is there any talk of this being applied to officially remaster old movies with stop motion? People have been producing these remasters for several years now, and they have all been quite impressive. I hope movie studios take advantatge of this upscaling tech. I think, the Robocop remaster benefits the most, out of the handful I am aware of.
@emptycore896 Жыл бұрын
I hope they don't. The AI smoothing really detracts from the visible labour involved. It'd be like replacing the Mona Lisa with a 4k print, or plastering the pyramids. The dynamation was on 24s to match the footage - now it looks like everything is moving faster than the people. Don't George Lucas the old films.

Oh wow, that actually looks really nice. This doesn't often work that well with stop animation, but in this instance its blended really well. The thing is, i can't tell how much of it is Cap's work making it look that much better, and how much can be attributed to the original animation, which is very detailed. (Stop motion is a PITA to do, but this example seems well above average (lighting is meh, but that's expected)).
@CaptRobau2 жыл бұрын
It is a great movie to be working off of. When making it I realized the end result was very nice because while there are a lot of interactions between people and dinosaurs, they are usually on either of the screen (left/right, top/bottom). That made it easy to mask it so that the people could run in the normal framerate and the monsters at the higher framerate. This reduces the soap opera effect I've had in previous movies where people and monsters are both on screen couldn't be masked out. People never look at higher framerates. Luckily here I could separate the two.
@joeydaniel30532 жыл бұрын
@@CaptRobau but wouldn't it look a bit off if the humans and dinosaurs have both different fps? I think it would be more obvious that the dinosaur were inserted rather than giving the illusion that both parties are in the same world

I think it would be interesting if you pulled back a bit with these experiments. The stop motion in most movies looks jerky because it's shot on twos (every other frame), so it's half as smooth as the other elements. Essentially, there's a mismatch between the actors running around at 24 fps and the creatures moving at 12 fps. I'd be curious to see what it would look like if you got the monsters up to 24, matching the rest of the film, rather than cranking everything up so high. The result would be closer to what we might have gotten if they had spent twice as long working on those original shots. The super smooth look that you're shooting for is not to my taste, but I realize that's a more subjective thing. I'd love to see you revisit Robocop for instance, and make those ED-209 shots actually match the rest of the movie as originally shot, with everything going at a full 24. Anyway, I appreciate the effort that goes into these things. I've messed with some of those tools, and I know that there's a lot of fiddling around if you want a decent result. :)

Watching this so smoothly you can see better the great flow in the movements. I don't know if this would be considered cheating nowadays as a way to enhance stopmotion in a big production. But I sure hope so they start using tools like these to complement the great work they do.

The original capture seems to have some warping going on. Particularly around where the stop motion creature is and where the action is. Particularly the rocks in the pterodactyl scene. Just watch the rocks and you'll see what I mean. That being set aside I do like the 120 frames per second better. It still contains that charm of stop-motion but not nearly as jerky.
@CaptRobau2 жыл бұрын
The warping could be a result of the production process of the stop-motion, as it is a regular transfer of the movie itself. Anyway glad you like the high frame rate experiment. I thought it turned out well myself too.

If in 1992 ILM knew this software, Steven Spielberg would have accepted stop motion animation, instead it did not know it and S. Spielberg ordered it to use CGI 3D models animated by stop motion animators. James Cameron did not know this software, if not he would have used it in the BD of Terminator where Terminator, when it is without flesh, moves according to classic stop motion animation. What a pity.

The "smoothing" is pushed waaaay too far. It's bad enough when people have "tru-motion" turned on on their TVs. Having it just be on part of the frame makes it even more distracting. I do think these processes can work well with stop motion, but this just feels like pushing things as far as they can go just for the sake of it. I do wonder what it might look like on some of Phil Tippet's stuff though, like Dragonslayer, or Robocop 2.
