My grandma was in Valdivia during the 1960 9.5 earthquake. She said the streets opened and closed repeatedly, with lots people falling down into them. Houses collapsed by the dozens. The Cascadia “megaquake” is not predicted to be 10 on the Richter scale. The previous one in the 18th century was around 9ish. There are remains of trees on beaches where the the land sunk in that earthquake.
@skyhawk_4526
@skyhawk_4526 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Lots of wild exaggerations in this video. The quake could likely only top about 9.2 magnitude, and more likely would be around 8.0. The tsunami would also likely be 100 feet or less and not 200 feet as claimed in the video. And the death toll would probably be in the 1,000s to 10,000 and not in the millions as the video suggests. Don't get me wrong, a Cascadia "big one" would be an unprecedented disaster for the west coast states of the US, but no where near as apocalyptic as the video suggests.
@magiciangob
@magiciangob 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the USGS website says that a 10 is impossible to hit, there is no fault line on earth large enough. Pretty sure they know more than just about anyone on this subject. It's unfortunate that it was put this way, even a 9.5 or 9.8 or whatever would be dramatic enough, and still potentially plausible I guess, but using a number that is literally outside of the scale casts doubt on every claim made. As someone who has lived in the Portland area his entire life, I am well aware of the real potential danger, which while extremely remote is also terrifying. No need to hype it up for that extra click or two when reality alone is horribly interesting.

Yeah that kind of happened in Kumamoto during the most recent earthquake there. The first night was a pretty big earthquake and shook up the area bad enough. We thought that was it but then the next night, the shaking was back but it was stronger and lasted longer. None of us thought the previous earthquake was a pre-shock and I was just huddled with my friend when my neighbor came into the house, the earthquake still going, and telling us we needed to get up the mountain in case of a tsunami. Thankfully no tsunami but, that experience taught me never to take any shaking lightly.

A 10 magnitude earth quake is only 3 MAGNITUDE away from the earthquake that was caused by an entire METEOR what meteor you ask the meteor that made he dinos extinct As when the meteor hit it made a 13 magnitude earthquake that made Lava tsunamis,great tsunamis,meteor showers,etc And the strongest ever recorded was a 1960 that was 9.5 magnitude So we're 3.5 magnitude away from human extinction I mean even if someone survived using planes who will lead factories who will make electricity so even if the billionaires survived they will die soon due to low population
@mgm57901

@@sad_cat9081 I highly doubt (though cannot say for sure) that a 13 magnitude is possible without an outside force like the meteor. Each point on the richter scale is 10 times stronger than the next. So a 13 is around 3,000 times more powerful than a 9.5

I think the Australians would arrive very quickly to help with the fires since the US and Canada have mutual aid agreements with them. The Aussies have come through for us several times before when wildfires got out of hand in the US, and I know they would do it again. I also suspect there would be urban rescue crews from Mexico (esp. Mexico City) and South America along the Ring of Fire...places like Chile especially really know what they are doing in a major earthquake.

Geologist here! The diagram that is used at 0:39 is slightly incorrect. It should be the oceanic plate that is dipping under the continental plate, not the other way around, as is depicted! The oceanic plate has been subducting under the continental plate for a super super long time--but it is locked in place right now, which is causing the continental plate to bulge. When it does rupture, the oceanic plate won't slip under the continental plate for the first time, but it will continue in its downward motion, no longer stuck (for a while at least until it sticks again).

A lot is incorrect about this video: like the magnitude being 10 (more like 8.5 to 9.2) and the tsunami being 200 feet high (more like no higher than 100 feet - probably less) and the deaths being in the millions (more like several thousand). Don't get me wrong, that would be an unprecedented disaster for the west coast, but nowhere near what the exaggerations in the video suggest.

For people who are worried: No, earthquakes of magnitude 10 or larger cannot happen. The magnitude of an earthquake is related to the length of the fault on which it occurs. That is, the longer the fault, the larger the earthquake. A fault is a break in the rocks that make up the Earth's crust, along which rocks on either side have moved past each other. No fault long enough to generate a magnitude 10 earthquake is known to exist, and if it did, it would extend around most of the planet.

Imagine if this really happened, and then the supervolcano under Yellowstone national park erupted at the same time! That's GG for the whole western part of the US.

And about 45 percent of the entire world once the forced ice age starts from all that smoke and dust. :)

Nah that's GG for the entire planet. Yellowstone is supposed to throw enough smoke and ash into the atmosphere that the cloud will cover the entire planet and cause an ice age although even if it doesn't cause an ice age there will be massive food shortages because of most of the plant life on earth dying from the lack of sunlight

That's exactly what I was thinking. The sudden release of the seismic energy of the tectonic plate disruption causing the volcano to become active as a result.

See at 5:43 it lists many cities that would be completely destroyed. Despite being already living in Washington state and being scared, I become terrified as I realise im surrounded by those cities. What joy!
