This whole "single disc" argument really proves how effective and genial is the White Album. You notice that everyone that makes these playlists chooses different songs and very different orders, meaning that the album is very varied and has tastes for almost everyone. If it was released as a single disc, I wouldn't have be as iconic as it is today.

True - but in reality, the only reason there are so many songs on it is because the Beatles were trying to get out of their EMI contract, which was broken down in terms of songs, not albums - otherwise, it would have been a normal-length record. They just wanted to dump *everything* onto it so they could escape EMI's contract after it was released. Which isn't to say they tried to also make a good double album in the process, but that was the specific reason for it not being a normal-length LP - and why it's so fragmented in terms of style. Lennon and McCartney were largely already writing separately at this point.
@whodidit993 ай бұрын
Uh! When it was released CDs hadn't been invented, which means if you wanted to skip a song you would have had to get up, take the stylus off the record, then place it in the groove preceding the song you want to hear. Do you get it? There are lots of filler on the album, and a few real clunkers. It really should have been a single album. The Beatles included songs that really should have been shelved to fulfill their contract with EMI, that's it.

@chrisparkin99476 жыл бұрын
@@MacXpert74 But it's by no.means a standard blues. The Beatles are far too original for that. It's not just a three chord job like most blues tunes and it has a zany time signarure. Unlike your typical blues (yer blues-as John's pun would have it), it doesn't stick to the blues formula lyrically either. Would your typical blues tune reference Bob Dylan?.Unlike a lot of blues which just consist of stock phrases, you can tell John here is communicating what he genuinely feels. His pain is real. He means it, man! Apart from the throwaway 12 Bar Original, this is the only Beatles' blues (It's yer blues, folks. There ain't gonna be any others) There's a reason for that. John chooses this song form because it's the perfect vehicle for what he wants to express. . The whole point of a blues is (arguably) to.be an.outlet for the artist's pain No other form would do. No other Beatles ' track communicates so much pain. Give this tune another go. It's perfect in and of itself.

I find ATMP an easier exercise because I didn't grow up with it, whereas I have heard the White Album so much that it is difficult to imagine it a different way. Side 1 of the White Album especially I experience as a single unit so much that it is even hard to cut filler like Wild Honey Pie because it forms part of the overall experience, kind of like the ads on The Who Sell Out. I don't have the same attachment to ATMP so it is easier to detach the individual tracks from the overall experience.
@dumbbitchenergy42236 жыл бұрын
Brent Hooton I totally get what you mean there. Personally, I discovered The Beatles and their solo albums around the same time, and All Things Must Pass is one of my all time favourite albums, so it would be challenging for me to cut some songs. That album is just so rich in content that it would be hard to cram the best stuff into one single LP.

Paul McShartney I’ve always thought ATMP cloud’ve made a positively perfect double album. Cut Apple Jam, I Dig Love and Isn’t It a Pity Version 2. I thought about this idea today and came up with this. In an alternate universe John and Paul decided that after Pepper, John would take more of a leading role than Paul. Since Pepper was a musical achievement, the next full album would be a poetic achievement. The album would be called, "Revolution" and would still have an all white cover to contrast Pepper. And the tracks are. Revolution 1 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da While My Guitar Gently Weeps Happiness is a Warm Gun Blackbird Don't Pass Me By Julia Yer Blues Mother Nature's Son Back in the USSR Revolution 9 I'm so Tired Can You Take Me Back? (Hidden Track) I left out all the other's because the lyrics of all don't relate to the narrative built in this new album, which is, to take a stance with both "Revolutions" bookending the album. At the beginning of side one, "Revolution 1" kicks us off by commanding action. "Ob-La-Di" responds by representing people who ignore it all and do what they want instead. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is exactly about that, watching the world pass as you sit and watch (also I'd prefer it to be the anthology version because personally it feels more meaningful). "Happiness is a Warm Gun" can be interpreted as an opinion on war. Blackbird retains its meaning concerning the Civil Rights Movement. "Don't Pass Me By" is a jaunty attention grabber that reminds you that their are problems that you shouldn't overlook, both with the title and the, would be, metaphorical story in the song about longing for love. Side two opens with "Julia", a letting go of the past and an acceptance of the future and the things you must do. "Yer Blues", parody or not, is screaming for anyone to listen. "Mother Nature's Son" is someone looking in the mirror and asking oneself, what am I going to do about it? "Back in the USSR" can be interpreted as almost an oblique future obscured by the catchy beat and delivery of the song. Which leads right into "Revolution 9", chaos. And then, the album ends with, "I'm so Tired", of all of this. And, "Can You Take Me Back?", to when I was a boy with my mother and there weren't any problems at all. I considered the amount of songs for each member. John and Paul have 2 each on side 1 and 3 each on side 2. George and Ringo have only 1 each on side 1, but in this alternate universe I made up in my head lol, I'd imagine Revolution 9 would be a more collective and more musical effort? So that it would involve George and Ringo more, giving them another song. And I'd even change it to "Revolution 11", with it being the 11th song. I know John has his thing with the 9 but, different universe lol. So yeah, that's my reinterpretation of "The White Album" as a single LP.

The two things I changed in my digital Beatles playlist is getting Honey Pie / Mother Nature's Son out and Hey Jude and Lady Madonna in, and replacing the album version of Revolution 1 with the single version. If and how it would fit on a double vinyl album that way I really don't care. As I didn't want to buy the mono version , I copied it into an 80 minutes single CD-R, that's no trouble at all except if you like to have it complete as it runs a few minutes longer then 80. So the question is rather how to fit a double album into a single CD, what tracks will be left out? Most will say Revolution 9 as you do, but not me.By the way, Not Guilty got included in the Let It Be section on my 197 track Beatles playlist.

A standard “rule” adopted by the Lennon-McCartney’s leadership was to leave to Harrison the 2/14 space of the album - at least from _Help!_ on… Since _Revolver_ already broke the rule (3/14), the following list goes further by including _all_ of the Hari-songs published in the double _White Album_ sɪᴅᴇ ᴏɴᴇ [ 01 ] Savoy Truffle 2' 54" [ 02 ] Martha My Dear 2' 28" [ 03 ] I’m So Tired 2' 03" [ 04 ] Everybody’s Got Something To Hide (Except Me And My Monkey) 2' 24" [ 05 ] Piggies 2' 04" [ 06 ] Cry Baby Cry 3' 02" [ 07 ] Dear Prudence 3' 55" sɪᴅᴇ ᴛᴡᴏ [ 01 ] Julia 2' 56" [ 02 ] While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4' 45" [ 03 ] Glass Onion 2' 17" [ 04 ] Blackbird 2' 18" [ 05 ] Long, Long, Long 3' 06" [ 06 ] Mother Nature’s Son 2' 48" [ 07 ] Happiness Is A Warm Gun 2' 44"

Your side 2 is radical and very intriguing. I wanted to dismiss it but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t work. Good job! Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing about your side 1. I can’t get past your opener (probably the most crucial song on any album). It just doesn’t work IMO.

Interesting I guess... but excluding Back in the USSR and Helter Skelter while retaining the wretched Piggies, on side one no less.... Yeah that's a hard pass.

Actually I just tried to balance the duration of both sides; yet the first three tracks are somehow related to the beginning of _Revolver_ (1. Harrison · 2. McCartney · 3. Lennon).

If I had to do this, assuming I had this amount of time: Side A would ideally be a more happy side. Something like this: 1. Dear Prudence 2. Glass Onion 3. Savory Truffle 4. Martha my Dear 5. Everybody’s got Something to Hide 6. Mother Nature’s Son 7. Cry Baby Cry Side B would be little more dark, and would flow like this: 8. Helter Skelter 9. Happiness is a Warm Gun 10. Rocky Raccoon 11. While my Guitar Gently weeps. 12. I’m so Tired 13. Goodnight (not really dark but it’d be a nice “closer”) And then to top it off I’d have a segment of Why Don’t we Do it in the Road? as a hidden track you’d have to wait for similar to how Sabotage by Black Sabbath did it.

@@scratchesofbaseball I've loved the Beatles since 1983. Okay, for balance: I love the jangly guitar tone, the counterpoint to the melody. I always wondered how they got that sound. Guitar effects weren't advanced at the time, so i wonder if it's simply multi tracked to give that Chorus FX kind of sound. I think i was harsh calling I Will "Maccafluff", it's nice, and i do mean nicey-nice lol but those guitar parts are gorgeous.

@uberbeast1132 жыл бұрын
@@scratchesofbaseball It's NICE. If we go straight for hyperbole like that, to describe every little thing (dont mean the beatles track lol) what's left to describe George's solo on Hey Bulldog, Old Brown Shoe, or the reaching for the stratosphere right at end of Dear Prudence:...."wont you come out to play"...(bleep bleep buh bleep a bleep deep deep....fades into the deep blue silence) it sounds like a harmonic plucked then jiggle on/off switch super quick a la Pete Townshend. I think George played like he was on acid. When it was a bad trip and he couldnt get it together he was hesitant and prone to fluffing notes. When he got it together he was just so exquisitely tasteful, had this awareness of the space between the notes, some of his solos had the mark of a master craftsman like Til There Was You, Fixing a Hole...i could name so many others. Sheez i hate it when people slag the Beatles. People have to learn to listen out of the box so to speak. Tune to a different frequency. You a guitarist brother? I been playing since '82 and bass since '88. Started learning by ear listening to Harrison and Marvin (Shadows)

I believe in order to not belittle the cut tracks in single LP versions of White, the album designer should make another album (I called mine A Doll’s House as a reference to an older name for the white album) with all the cut tracks. This extra album should still have effort put into the track order. For bonus points you can combine the two albums and add some singles to make a ‘deluxe’ kinda thing.

The double album gave the Beatles some cache that only an double LP could have provided . It’s also got those dark Charles Manson connections. 1968, Manson, the death of 1967 and the war. It’s the toughest, the creepiest, the best written and it long, creating a musical world the others didn’t quite capture. Goodnight at the end is creepy yet loving, brings the listener to a nice place, a warm place before checking out. The Beatles at their best filled with great songs. The so called filler sets the songs up for the mood and pace of the album. Favorite songs by each: George Harrison: Long Long Long While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Savoy Truffle and Piggies.. John Lennon: Glass Onion, Dear Prudence Happiness In Warn Gun. I’m so tired, Everybody’s Got Something To Hide, Sexy Sadie ,Revolution 1 and 9, Yer Blues, Cry Baby Cry, and Julia. Ringo: Goodnight (love that song), Paul: Back n the USSR, Rocky Raccoon, Blackbird, Happy Birthday, Mother Nature’s Son. Helter Skelter, Ob-la-di, Bungalow Bill, Martha My dear, Do it in the Road, Honey Pie. - Whew. Less filler on the White Album that just about any album in my option. If I had to say filler: Wild Homey Pie, and maybe Ringo’s Don’t Pass me Bye but I like it. I like Wild Honey Pie too. Let it Be has more filler. Earlier Beatles albums had some filler. I don.t rate Revolver as high as re- visionist listeners do. Rubber Soul is excellent. So is Beatles for Sale. Sgt. Peppers is very good with some tremendous songs She’s leaving home). A Hard Days Night is excellent. The While Album is their peak with Abbey Road right there because of the momentum of their best songwriting years. Now imaging if Hey Jude, Lady Madonna, Revelation, Hey Bulldog and Across the Universe has been included. Wow!

I wouldn't condense it to a single album. I think that all the songs, even the not-so-good ones like Don't Pass Me By and Revolution 9, still belong in the album and make up it's whole, and I wouldn't listen to it any other way. Sure, it doesn't flow amazingly, and it's a bit inconsistent at times, but that's all just part of the experience.
@tdunph42506 жыл бұрын
Nessi Well worded!! "that's part of the experience of it." The unevenness of it. Some songs flow, some don't. It was the Beatle's version of what being openminded musically meant, instead of going with the grain they went slightly against it with a few commercial type of songs thrown in for good measure.
