These videos were great. Love how much context and flavor you were able to add and the story you were able to weave from this.

do you have the percentage wins stat? or the "most dominant seasons" stat? that's how I would guess the GOAT would be decided. kinda like how people consider Leclerc and Piastri's F2 seasons to be some of the best
@kabel935712 сағат бұрын
and there you have it, reasons why F1 is falling out of favor with me, I relish the technical side of the sport and not the circus that surrounds it (though admittedly that side id hilariously entertaining!). And Sprint races? Yeah, not a fan of those either. Will be interesting to see what happens with FB back in.

To be fair, the issue with 2021 was nothing to do with the points system and everything to do,with the race steward being a right bar-steward.

Hmmm... Couldn't leave it alone even in this alternative world could you. "Despite pressures to manufacture some kind of last lap battle race director Michael Masi follows all procedures... correctly". Showing your colours - and they ain't pretty. You could still have included this scenario but formulated in a neutral way (or as many see it in a CORRECT way) but you just couldn't.

I think Flavio getting involved with Alpine F1 at this time bears similarities to when Ferdinand Piech took over Volkswagen. They were in dire straits at the time and he later said something along the lines of 'only a company in that kind of position would let someone like me in the door' . I wonder if it's the same with Flavio and Alpine.

ELO rank the teams each season (yes, this does mean the cars are being ranked), and then use that to bias the gains/losses between teammates? Is there a way to make ELO... recursive? Or, rather, not dependent on the order in which opponents face each other? The Pagerank algorithm behind OG Google Search finds the limit of repeated re-weighings of pages' links. A page that many sites link to is great in a vacuum, but if those other sites are themselves not highly linked, it's actually not that valuable. This exercise I think highlights the difficulty of trying to measure driver skill against the entire environment in which they are competing, with different teammates, different cars, different eras. Very cool video! I'm not a huge F1 fan (don't really have a way to watch the races, unfortunately), but I love me some statistics and stuff. Your production and delivery are amazing.

On a serious note here though I never understood why F1 ever had it's points system as we have it now. It's really... weird and unrewarding kind of. My ideal points system that I can think of just off the top of my head would be as follows: RACE: 1st - 30 2nd - 25 3rd - 21 4th - 18 5th - 16 6th - 14 7th - 12 8th - 10 9th - 8 10th - 6 11th - 4 12th - 2 fastest lap for anyone: 1 point and add half points for each Qualifying position. I always feel like Qualifying feels kind of unimportant because well if you sit in a Red Bull qualifying 20th doesn't matter, you'll be up in 3rd by lap 12. Not really but you get my point. This way however the stat of pole positions would actually matter and not be a downplay if you have fewer race wins than that. It would also mean there seriously is something to play for in Qualifying AND it would also let improve the racing system in the sense that yes consistency is still important and the bigger part but if you have an insanely high skill peak (like Senna for example boys and girls ;D) this would really reward you for it yet still not encourage a mentality "fuck it, I'ma go for the gap and if we crash out and die I won't have lost anything". I feel like giving out points for Qualifying would seriously make for much more exciting saturdays and also still have much tension playing on sundays. AND the pengilum can swing around really quickly as well! Charles on pole and Max behind in 14th!!! How nice Charles has closed the gap! DNF for Charles, Max finishes 3rd!!! Nice he hasn't gotten away TOO far in the championship! Mr. V actually pointed out something really interesting to me. That the system of 89 and 90 actually had some sense. Why not bring that back BUT make it for both Qualifying and race with my points system! Either make it for example "your 2 worst results in both Qualifyinf and the race won't count" OR "only your 18 best results in both Qualifying and race count" would be really nice in my opinion! Does still call for a real ambition to finish/start as high as possible but if you fail once or twice and have maybe 2 or 3 DNFs in the season or mechanical problems in either Quali or the race it won't stomp your championship position down tooooo much! Would make mechanical failures be a little less painful for example and also not punish mistakes small mistakes too harshly.

Have you done a vid that looks at luck range? Where perhaps the last race is a title decider, or persistent unreliability squewed the outcome (eg 2005). So HAM could have won '07, '10, '16 & '21 - or lost '08. ALO could be a 5-time champ, 3 for RAI etc. It would be especially interesting if it accounted for points dropped that weren't the fault of the driver eg mechanical issues or being taken out. Maybe best to exclude historic seasons for this one, pre ~1980.
