The Persian Empire had historically been one of, if not the greatest empire in the Middle East, and the world for over 2,500 years. They had survived numerous invasions from many foreign Empires, from the Greeks, to the Arabs, to the Mongols, and even the British. But, it was only during the Cold War when, after only a few bad years in the 1970's, Iran erupted in revolution, overthrowing the Monarchy, bringing down the millennia-old Persian Empire along with it. But, what if that changed? What if the Persian Empire Survived? Enjoy!

Iranian here, The iran-related part of this video is one of better descriptions made by foreigners, however it has a few mistakes: 1- in the land reform program, peasants did receive land, but most of them "sold it" and moved to the cities creating a large wave of rural to urban migration which ended up in that large urban lower class that drove the islamic revolution. 2- Mosaddegh had lost confidence of parliement but had refused to step down and dissolved the parliement instead. So he had basically lost legitimacy and while american help did play a role in Mosaddegh's fall, it was only an extra push, Mosaddegh would probably fall without it anyway, just a few months later. 3- Carter did push the fall of Shah probably as much as Eisenhower had pushed the fall of Mosaddegh, and it wasn't really because he cared about human rights, it was because Shah as the de facto leader of OPEC at that time was pushing the oil prices up ignoring western countries' protests.

The Shah was a good man that genuinely cared about his country. His fatal flaw was being, honestly, a bit delusional. He wasn't a realist. That cost him and his beloved country more than anyone could ever imagine.
@turvani

@@lambert801 he made way too many enemies. the nationalists didnt like him (because he gave up the iranian claim on bahrain), the clergy didnt like him (too secular), the US didnt like him (oil prices), the communists didnt like him (anti communist ideals) and the people wanted western freedom and were thus manipulated by khomeini

I've always imagined Iran as a Middle-Eastern Japan: a fully-industrialized first-world power on the cutting-edge of technology and science, greatly Westernized socially while still retaining much of its indigenous heritage and ancient customs, and a cultural influence not only on its immediate neighbors, but throughout the world.

In our timeline the only country in the Middle East to industrialize like that is Turkey. It's also a matter of institutions to maintain the industrialization, which Ataturk did bring to the country albeit very forced... Iran going through this industrialization as a country in the Middle East would certainly be interesting though!

As an Armenian, but born and living in Iran I appreciate these kind of videos showing the rich history of Persia and Iran and speculating possible outcomes BUT I think for you as someone who does all this thorough research and putting up and amazing video you should definitely try to pronounce the names right. It’s unsettling hearing all the names wrong lol. I’m sure if you ask me or any other persian from the community we’d be glad to help. Much love and keep up the great content.

Please mention that the “Great” Britain was again against the king around 1970s because he was feeling powerful and was trying to control oil prices. Behind the scenes, they played a big role supporting and advocating for the ayatollahs and helping them overthrow Pahlavi’s dynasty. In the modern days, most of high ranking ayatollahs own many properties in London and visit frequently specially for medical operations. This has become a hot topic even among the regime supporters these days.

Iran would have become the Germany in the Middle East without the 1979 revolution. Reforms launched by the Shah were ambitious but a big part of the Iranian population had different preoccupations such as dealing with water and food supplies first, without mentionning religious matters. Biggest mistake of the Imperial gvt was to ignore these preoccupations before launching projects..

As a persian, let me clarify a few things. First, Khomeini was rightly called the evil wizard. Second, Mohammad Reza Shah was one of the greatest kings of Iran. Everything he did, he did it for the sake of people's welfare, Persia's culture and history. The same goes for his father. I am from the generation that never saw him but loves him for everything he did. He was betrayed by his ally USA. Everything we have up to this day, we owe it all to him. Literally. We won a war because of him. We have airplanes because of him. We have car factories because of him. Our economy hasn't completely collapsed yet because of him and ... Rest in peace Shah 🙏

What happened in 1979 was not a revolution, it was a national suicide by that generation that is hurting even todays generation. Nowadays many Iranians have realized the mistake they made 44 years ago and want the monarchy restored. So there is actually a very high chance to see Iran returning to monarchy and it's roots. 6:15 the Shah never tried to sell the lands back to peasants, he literally gave them for free to the peasantry. The story of Mohammad Reza Shah is filled with so much anti monarchy propaganda that you wouldn't believe how much lie they've spread throughout the years(P.S EDIT: the fact that even Josh doesn't know how much the commies supported Khomeini just shows how little truth there is available for the general public, you need to dive deep into the story to get the full picture and realize what a disaster 1979 was for Iran). I don't want to write an essay to defend the shah, ofc he had mistakes, everybody makes mistakes. But he and his father were the true founders of modern Iran, who dedicated their lives bringing Iran to the glory it deserved from the shadow of it's later centuries after the fall of Safavid empire...there are published secret documents showing how much the west feared Iran under Pahlavi dynasty, it was becoming a global superpower at an insane speed...no wonder communists and western governments secretly planned his fall in 1978.

Another good alternate scenario! This proven to me that not only the Ottoman Empire but any major Islamic powers in the Middle East have what it takes to unify the area and bring stability and prosperity back to the peoples! Also, I have this idea for you: What if Emperor Constantine VI, son of Irene of Athens, married Princess Rotrude, one of Charlemagne's daughters?

I think you're making a big leap from the revolution not happening to Islamic extremism not exploding sooner or later. It is Saudi Arabia who funds radicals as well, although a West-friendly Iran would reduce the conflicts. Don't really get the isolationist turn either. America still had a Cold War to win and I don't see them making big changes to their Soviet/Russia policy.

Great video! However I would like to add some minor details. If the 1979 revolution never happened, the shah could visit a decent hospital at will and probably wouldn't die in 1980. ( He died because he got exiled and also couldn't enter USA or any western alley in Europe , Therefore couldn't visit a hospital by the time ) Also you mentioned his only alley was USA but in the late 70s he didn't have any allies, US president basically said the Shah is finished so is our relations with him. and France basically escorted Khomeini ( an Islamic extremist ) to fly privately with Airfrance to Iran safely. And also ( this one is a little bit conspiracy ) , The western nations such as US, UK, France really wanted the shah regime to fall or even planned it accordingly. With the nationalization of Iran's oil and the rapid economic and industrial development and also interests of shah to influence oil prices willingly and the following disagreement with western oil companies in 1973 to developing a national oil company during the cold war, was really stressing UK and US, so it would make sense that the 1979 revolution was planned by the USA itself to maybe slow down a future economic rival ( Yes Iran compared to US was nothing but at the time middle east wasn't developed as much therefore if a nation which USA didn't really trust would have gained power, it could get control of the region and influence other oil producing nations ). There are even official interviews showing the CIA's files about shah ( but obviously not showing their plans ) And seeing the future we can see that a radical islamic regime that is a dictatorship, making the middle east unstable and funding terroristic groups, would actually benefit the US by selling weapons and having control of a oil producing weak region of the world.

The Islamic revolution in Iran did not cause the rise of the mujahideen in Afghanistan. Nor ‘Islamic’ terrorism. The US financed and trained the mujahideen in Afghanistan as a counterweight to soviet atheism. Furthermore, Iraq invaded Iran with the expressed support of the US (who gave Iraq chemical weapons) in order to crush anti-US sentiment in Iran and in the region as a whole.

I doubt that Iran would be more than a strong regional power, even in this scenario. In the 1980s and 1990s, many people predicted that Japan, a country more populous and more industrialized, than Iran, Japan is still only a regional power and ally of the United States. I think that it's fair to model this timeline's Iran as growing at an approximately similar rate to our timeline's Turkey (they had similar GDP per capita's before the Iranian Revolution), giving this timeline's Iran a GDP of around a trillion dollars. This puts them approximately on-par with Saudi Arabia's wealth, but their far larger population could make them the dominant regional power. However, our timeline's Turkey has a similar population and GDP to what I think Iran would have in this timeline, so it's by no means a guarantee. Iran would be probably be a more extreme version of Turkey - roughly aligned with the West, but with sympathies to Russia and China, controlling a strait that is incredibly important economically and strategically, but by no means an independent competitor to the West, Russia, or China - but a decent bit more powerful and independent because of their control over a major strategic resource. I could see Iran and India having a very strong alliance in this timeline. They would both be rapidly developing nations, close enough to have common interests (specifically in keeping Pakistan and Afghanistan pacified, keeping the oil flowing, and keeping both the West and China and Russia from totally dominating the world) but not too close to have competing territorial claims or ambitions, and they would not be economic competitors (Iran's economy being based on natural resources, while India's is based more on agriculture). An Indo-Iranian alliance would have massive leverage over China, as each nation in that alliance would be in a position to cut off Middle Eastern supplies of oil to China at a different choke point alone (and would be far more capable of that together), and Iran would be in a position to crush Pakistan with India if Pakistan intervened (especially if Afghanistan also did not remain neutral). They would also have a lot of leverage over the West for similar reasons, but not nearly as much as they would over China (the West is less reliant on Middle Eastern oil than China is, as the US and the North Sea countries have their own sources of oil and natural gas, while China does not).

This is actually an informative and an accurate yet completely neutral video about Iran’s recent history. As an Iranian I wanted to thank you for actually doing your homework and coming up with this masterpiece. Yep this is pretty much what happened to us, and what could’ve happened if none of this nonsense happened to Iran.. Just to add some more info: the 1979 revolution in Iran, was also heavily influenced by the leftist/communist activists, such as “Hezbe Toudeh” which was directly supported by the Soviets. Ayatollahs came in, in the last few months of the what we call “riot” and started riding the waves, suddenly his followers came on the top, and the rest is history. You gained a subscriber.

Actually wrote a paper on this very topic in one of my undergrad program. I think the US would still be pro-active on the world stage, but generally less directly. - NATO still grows as it did. Russia is and was a threat to US interests. - US would outsource most of its Middle East efforts to Iran and Israel. As long as the oil flows, all is well. - US is better positioned to be pro-active in the Indo-Pacific, which would antagonize China.

I liked the alternative scenario, but I had not seen so much historical misconception all rolled into one video; Though a lot of it is to be blamed on skewed and ideologically-driven historians. The section from Reza Shah's reign to Mosaddegh's removal from office is almost entirely incorrect, and you heavily downplayed the rise of Marxism and it's role between the 40s and 70s. Mosaddegh was a Socialist Qajar descendant who dissolved the National Parliament and attempted to overthrow the Constitutional Monarchy for a Republic. Also Marxist groups made up the majority of the participants in the 1979 revolution, until the Islamists suppressed them in 1981 and rewrote the narratives to turn it into an 'Islamic' revolution. The 70s Middle East in general saw a lot of Socialist revolutions and take-overs, like the Communist Coup d'etat in Afghanistan, the Dhofar rebellion in Oman, the emergence of Communist Yemen, the rise of the Socialist Ba'ath party in Iraq and Syria, and more; and the 1979 revolution in Iran has to be classified in the same category. I also have to note that this explanation is to inform you and your viewers, not a stamp of approval. I am a Royalist, seeking the return of our Prince and putting all this ugliness behind us.
