Greece won against massive odds in the wars against the Persians. But what if history had gone differently? What if Greece had actually lost against Persia and became absorbed into the Empire. Here is one scenario.

Lacedemonians = Spartans so there were probably 900 - 300 = 600 other lacedemonians out of the city of sparta, probably from its countryside. Phocians and many of those you mentioned guarded the secret pass and retreated without a fight, so they didn't take a part in the battle. And for the other guy, 70000 is the smallest modern estimated number so far of the persian army, but yeah it was not 2500000 that herodotus described.

***** No its not like that: 1: The greeks in total were 7000 but of those 7K only 1,6 fought. (300 spartans and the rest were thespians and thibians) 2: the persians were 100000-150000. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae.

I think it should be noted: Darius was, in many historical accounts, MORE tolerant of religion and national differences. Persia at this time had outlawed slavery which was alive-and-well in Greece, and IIRC Women could own property in Persia. If Xerxes did subjugate Greece (and assuming the same murdertastic succession continued right after he died, since Artaxerxes was a fairly nice king all things considered) similar human rights may have spread further into mainland europe as concepts far earlier. The effect in overall technology/science/philosophy wouldn't nessicarily change that much as the persians spreading greek ideas would likely occur, though at a bit of a slower rate, to Alexander's empire.

Ari Schwartz It certainly should be. Thank you for your comment. I wanted to fit that into the video, but it wouldn't have worked pacing wise. Persia and Greece fought many wars, but neither side was "bad" or "good". I wasn't saying Persia was bad. The looting and burning were simply how warfare was in ancient times, Greece committed the same atrocities to themselves.

it is not true that slavery was outlawed. The Cyrus cilinder granted liberation from slavery only for people living in Babylon after the conquest, not for the whole empire. Slavery was attested both from herodotus and from several texts during achaemenid era. However it is true that in persian empire slavery was mitigated and used in a lesser extent than in Greece or Rome

I don't know how true it is that the Persians were opposed to slavery, but I doubt they didn't practice it. Practically every ancient culture practiced slavery; the prisoners of war were frequently used for slave labor. As for Darius burning cities I can believe that. But I don't believe every single one of his generals were opposed to burning cities so it probably wasn't Darius who ordered the city to be burned down.

The concept of a disparate group of rivals or outright enemies uniting against what could be considered at the time to be an "alien," or at least foreign, invader seems to have been firmly planted in our minds as well. We as a species can't seem to get enough of stories based around that concept. The Vong War in Star Wars, or the Tyranids in 40k are good examples.

And all western shistorians forget the "little detail" that there were legions of slaves -in some cities as many as the free greeks and many of which were combat trained- that would have been very suppoortive of their liberators. That's what the Persians did in every conquered kingdom that allowed them to build their empire: giving freedom.
@owlabouteverything2066
@owlabouteverything2066 6 жыл бұрын
Carlos López Ferrer, the Persians practiced selective liberation. For example, when the Persian Empire under Cyrus conquered the Ionian Cities in 546 BCE, they sold all of the people of Magnesia and Priene into slavery, as they had refused to surrender. If you surrendered, the Persians were nice, but bad luck for you if you resisted or harboured any of Persia's enemies

Connor Dunn No. Trajan's key victories over the Parthians in 117 AD wherein he annexed Mesopotamia and Armenia quickly turned out to be fruitless as he abandoned both territories within a couple of years. Simply put, the Romans already did "beat" the Parthians but found out that holding onto any gained territory would be impossible due to overextension. Mesopotamia was effectively the eastern limit of Rome.

I must add to this, the mongols allowed bengal to be an autonomous state under their control, very much like today, how china controls hong kong but gives them certain control in some fields.. This was because they (the Mughals) knew that bengal flourished in a fountain wealth better when it was independent, rather than being as part of a bigger empire. Raluyen Skylance Rubbish. Slavery was rampant, even under Cyrus The Great. Cyrus Cylinder recorded the fact that he demanded a yearly tribute of 500 slave boys from Babylon after conquering it. Persepolis of Xerxes explain in details how slavery are the norms, and how they are regularly traded, run away, caught and returned back to their masters. And Persians are not a big fan of religious tolerance either. Cyrus The Great worshipped Marduk when he conquered Babylon to appease the Babylonians. Elsewhere, Xerxes and other Persians kings actually boasted the fact that they destroyed countless of temples, even calling the deities of the Ancient Egyptians as Satanic, these were all written on Persepolis of Xerxes. Why do you think Ancient Egypt hated the Persians so much and saw Rome as their liberators? Because the Persians discriminated them and destroyed their temples, that's why. Religious tolerance, abolishment of slavery is a modern concept which was concocted during the industrial revolution due to ideas of division of labor and also early ideas of human rights in Europe during the Enlightenment Period. It had nothing to do with Ancient Persians, Ancient Greeks, or any Ancient civilizations.

suriamarsuli That can not be true! Why would scholars call the cyrus cylinder the first charter of human rights if it was including the demand of slaves? and why would cyrus not have kept the jews enslaved after conquering babylon if he was supposedly demanding some? And if persians destroyed temples and statues of deity without any plausible reason, why would they help the jews rebuild their sacred temple of jerusalem and protect them from discrimination? After the greeks burned down persian cities the persians started to do the same to theirs, following the deportation of its inhabitants and NOT their enslavement!!! What you wrote smells like a big pile of nonsense bullshit! If you want to insist on these accusations being correct, just make sure to back them up with evidence! And if you do not know the zoroastrian values and their impact on ancient and modern persia and its culture and the rest of the world, you would not be in a place to judge anyways!

The Delian League rose and formed what was effectively an Athenian empire (think of it like an ancient version of what the US is like today. They had their hands in everyone else's pockets and could tell each of the city states what to do, and collected a tithe from them for the upkeep of the military) which then went to war with the Spartans and lost, then later the Macedonians came through and took over, then the Romans came over and took them over, then the country sort of changed hands a lot over the next 2000 years until we get to the point where the country was dominated by the Ottomans before being freed. Basically, empire fell, and every major power in the region took their turns teabagging them.

And in many ways they are one of most misunderstood empires in the west (properly partly due to the current Iranian government), but they have a great history of scholars. Even in such a repressive regime as the current one, they still manage to have a hugely educated population compared to any other country suffering the same troubles as them. That's quite impressive.

Wouldn't it be possible that the refugees from Greece would actually bolster the rans of the Italian and Libyan colonies, thus making thel stronger? It would even come so far that Rome wouldn't even be able to defeat them anymore and that they would have indeed been finished by the invading gauls that would come a couple of centuries later. Just making assumptions here do not take any of this as the truth.

well, maybe Rome wouldn't be able to beat them, mainly because they would have most of the world under their belt at that time, no doubt most or all of Europe, making the Romans considerably weaker and so they could just swoop in and take it over by them, because they would simply go into the italian peninsula and take over what little bit they needed to take it, if they hadn't already, in short, the Romans wouldn't even have the chance to form, much less defeat the Persians

I suspect Persia would have had a very light touch on Greece. Just pay your taxes and we'll leave you alone. Might even have been good for the Greeks as it would have prevented or tamped down internecine fighting and permitted them to further develop their cultural advances. Of course there would have been a lot of Greek aristocrats willing to work with the king of kings to make things work.

Very good video and a very intriguing question. I've never thought of this one before, but it could well have happened. The Persians were not mean or vengeful overlords at all. They definitely would have rebuilt Athens, but it would have been a Persian city, likely a royal capital from which the satrapi of the Helens would have been administered. While there would have been a diaspora and some new cities founded, this is what the Greeks did. I don't think it would have been a ton of people. I think it is a toss up as to whether the Greeks would have waited until they were strong enough and then rebelled or whether they would have been happy enough under Persian rule. The Greek cities would have continued to rule themselves, worship the same gods, trade and live in the same way. Democracy, philosophy, etc. would have survived and continued to flourish. I suspect the Persian Emperor would have ensured that the Greeks received very capable but lenient governors and officials, that Greece would have been the jewel in his crown, so to speak. Very fascinating stuff, Cody. Well done! Please keep the outstanding videos coming and God bless you, my friend!

Ibrahim Charneco I think if the Prussians didn't come to help the British, Napoleon would have won, since the battle was 78 thousand French vs 30 thousand British, 50 thousand Prussians, and about 20 thousand smaller german states + the netherlands. And remember the Battle was in Belgium, so it would have been much harder for Britain to send reinforcements. But I think in the end Napoleon would have been defeated because he was already defeated at Russia, he had rebellions for independence in Spain, and he was still fighting the German states in a 4 front war lol

a) The 300 Greeks story was a obviously exaggerated as per Greek tradition. b) Persia banned slavery, whereas Greece had a society where every couple would have their own slave (that's why nobody worked, and everyone was at the theatre or studying philosophy and the arts), so they were worse than even ISIS in regards to slavery, and Persia would be equivalent to the US here, banned slavery, and invading (so I side with Persia here). c) Alexander the Great says he backed out of India because he was pleased with the king's ilk for warfare, this is untrue, the Indians say this, and an objective source, the Tibetans who recorded these battles confirmed that the Ancient Hindus humiliated the Greeks in warfare, as the warrior caste. the Kshatriya, fought from sunrise to sunset, only sleeping 4 hours a day, and the Brahmins (saints/scientists/engineers/doctors/teachers etc) would provide them with the most technologically advanced armory/weaponry of the age, as is verified by the Greeks, bamboo bows that stabbed into the ground for extra strength, and shields lined with bronze and wooden layers for extra strength etc.

+Bruce Wayne true but lets point out that slavery back then had a different context.Slaves where mostly prisoners of war and they held among others roles of teachers musicians and paidagogs as well.You wouldn't expect of a city-state in antiquity not using their war prisoners in labor.Not saying that it was not bad but well not as disshonorable and inhumane as in the middle ages and even later
@BallyBoy95
@BallyBoy95 8 жыл бұрын
panos panopoulos No, they weren't mostly prisoners of war, how could it be? Every two Greeks had one slave, there were many ways you could get yourself into slavery, such as committing crimes and being kidnapped into it by some foul people. Also, Persians weren't allowed to take even prisoners of wars as slaves back then, nor were Indians, the reason they were allowed to later was because of the Greek conquest of Persia that normalised slavery, and then the islamic influences on Persia and India which normalised it in both regions once more. Persia became Iran and India, well the Hindus fought back (having sacrificed hundreds of millions of their own, as to not submit to Islam).

+Bruce Wayne really? greeks were worse than ISIS? were they taking heads off? I am not going to present more isis atrocities here , because the comparison is unfair for the greeks and because of respect to isis victims.(oh, look, you exaggerate here just as greeks have done with the 300 story which i am sure you learnt because of the movie...btw, this terrible movie is american, not greek, but anyway) You can make a search of what a slave meant in greece. I will only point out a couple of things, the rest by your own if you really care about history. Slaves were coming from wars or it was people who had many debts and could not pay them off. Then , their social status was changing and becoming slaves, which meant they had to work at the house of someone that was belonging to another social group. If you think about it , this thing happens today as well. If someone lose all his money, even if he was a millionaire in order to survive need to work and even maybe become a servant or an employ of someone richer. If the word slave confuses you, it is because of american history...slaves were not tortured in ancient greece, the opposite, most of the times they were considered members of the whole family. I am sure there would have been people torturing their slaves, but this may happen everywhere and even today there are people torturing other people over whom they have power. There is also another aspect of this matter. Athens was so well organized that even people who was losing everything was about to keep offering to their society, even in this way. I think it is way better than today's homeless people, who lose their self dignity and they can even die and no one notice. As it concerns Alexander the Great etc....no comment, just because of respect (i am fed up with all that has been said and altered all these years)

They could be used sexually as well, and could not participate in Athenian democracy. Slaves were not respected, they were treated terribly. IF Persia had conquered Greece? Who says they didn't? Persia learned to play the infamous squabbling Greek city-states off against one another after their military defeats. They would pay Sparta or Athens obscene sums of money to help them fight their rivals, and could enter or revoke military alliances with them on a whim if Persia felt that city was getting too powerful. By the end of the Peloponnesian War, Persia's indirect financial influence was such that Greece was an informal satrapy, where Persian satraps would attract Greek artists to beautify their cities and hire Greek mercenaries to fight in their own petty wars. True, the Greeks repelled the Persian invasions in 490 BC and 480-479BC. But Persian culture deeply influenced the Greeks, as the Greeks really respected rich, successful people like the Great King. For example, the Greeks erected monuments and trophies to their victories because the Persians did it. The victory trophy the Athenians set up after Marathon was actually a Persian trophy that was meant to celebrate the Persian defeat of Athens! How's that for irony?

༼ つ◕ω◕ ༽つ WOW The Great King didn't need to rule Greece directly. Persia's mere presence was enough to alter power in the region. Athens and Sparta were scrambling over one another for Persian patronage, because if you had Persian backing with their seemingly limitless wealth, your enemy wouldn't stand a chance. How else do you think Sparta was able to afford a navy c.400BC? Having money does mean power. Especially so back in antiquity. Back then Greece was dirt poor. You can't grow good food crops there because Greece is mostly mountains, and the soil is much too salty. The Greeks had to trade a lot for food from Egypt and the Black Sea, areas where Persia either controlled or held significant sway. There also wasn't much in the way of raw materials, except for that lucky silver vein the Athenians had. Again, you had to trade to get even decent weapons to fight with.
@Gameshunter3012
@Gameshunter3012 9 жыл бұрын
frostyguy1989 Again, that's not "ruling over". That's patronage. Unless the Greek "bent the knee" (figuratively, of course. There was no feudal system back then.) then they weren't ruled by Persia. If a country today seeks money and weapons from the USA, does that mean the USA rules over them? If you answered "yes" you aren't mature enough for me to continue this conversation with you and you probably believe in far fetched conspiracy theories too. If you answered "no" then you deny your own points and refute your own arguments.

Your Historians are a bunch of liars. They don't have any proofs of their propaganda. Yes Indeed Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon e. g. literary with "flowers". He was welcomed as a Savior who did not kill the people nor plunder and freed the Jews from Slavery and send them to Israel. The Jews called him an Angel. Read the Torah. The Greek historians also described him as a great ruler. The Persian Empire unlike Egypt paid its workers to build e.g. Persepolis. My Source is History. Your "historians" are telling fairy tails.

The way Slavery was practiced in Greece never occurred in ancient Persia. You could not buy/sell slaves nor enslave anybody because the Cyrus Cylinder forbid it.

Ali Geda _"Your Historians are a bunch of liars"_ *They are not **_my historians_*. If you actually believe that the Persians conquered others with flowers, then you haven't read one single page of history. Let me ask you; The Persians went to conquer Greece with flowers? Coz history recorded something completely different. Also, All historians are aware that the Persian propaganda machine was the largest the world ever saw until many centuries later when the Romans appeared in history. Finally, The Jewish History prefaces the role of the Persians like this: _"...The Persian exile began on a positive note for the Jewish people _*_but quickly turned dark with the threat of 'holocaust' at the hands of one of history’s great anti-Semites_*_..."_ Quickly turned black... Hence what you claim, all those Angels and flowers, is the Persian side; the propaganda. The way you describe the Persian Empire, if you add some hash, more than half of the world's population, would wanna live there. Angels, flowers, freedom and hash.. So, please spare me your *glorified* view of your ancestors' past. You don't need this.. *The Persian Empire was one of the greatest empires in History, and the Persians (or Iranians) have a great history*. There're no such things as flowers, and the historians put it correctly: *_"The ancient Persians were not some early form of Swedish Social Democrats."_* It's almost a proven fact that the Cyrus Cylinder was nothing more than a part of the Persian propaganda machine. Nonetheless, correct or false, for the UN after adopting this scroll, there's no turning back. This by all means doesn't mean that the _"history"_ behind Cyrus and the scroll is correct.

Greek culture is one of the dominate influences on Western thought. The idea of the individual being important mostly because of them. If Persia won and reduced Greek culture then the idea of the individual wouldn't have been as strong (at first at least), making people more focused on group thinking instead. Hypothetically this would have both bad and good implications.
@Duzaroo

+Ananda Johnson yes but when you narrow people's thoughts to only the greater good then you take out a lot of cultural endeavor. Shakespeare only did it for the money, and you don't get that in a more group thought society.

Persia did win. Read the title. It never mentioned if who won. Persia did win. Persians never followed group thinking. They had a centralised government, but it was Greece who meddled in individual affairs. It was Iranic and Germanic peoples that respect individual thought, hence abolishment of slavery, taxation from separate individuals and religious freedom. You ironically spoke of of Western thought. Westerners are nasty group thinkers, otherwise you wouldn't have said Western thought. The Persians invented individualism as a successful venture and influenced every nation in the world with it.

The did not take slaves (exept from newly defeated people, you are correct there.) and were famously religusly tolorant. Heck, I would rather be a woman in ancient Persia than a woman even in Rome. Sure democracy would have been somwhat suffed out, but their is a case to be made that monarchy is supperior. +Ethan Nunofyourbeezewax A shallow analysis. The greeks unquestionably invented (edit: invented so much in every field) and boosted every scientific field to its limits. Every field (you name it). Even the appearence of the clocks in Europe after the middle ages, is because of the 4th BC greeks (I *strongly* recomend you to see this documentary: _"The 2000 Year-Old Computer - Decoding the Antikythera Mechanism"_ even if you've seen something similar on this issue). If the persians had conquered the greeks, *none* is to say that this kind of evolution would have happen the way it happened. And if one argues that evolution can't be stopped, which is true, none is to say which path it would follow. Actually all agree that it would never happen that way... What is certain is that even if it would follow the same path, its progress would most certainly be delaied and very slow. *This is certain* only by considering this one single aspect I mentioned above; the amazing, *unseen* boosting of *EVERY* scientific field to its limits. John Stuart Mill _“The Battle of Marathon, _*_even as an event in British history_*_, is more important than the Battle of Hastings.”_ The french poet Jean Richepin is setting this more emphatically . _"The last word that will be heard on planet earth will be Greece"_ _Bury Greece at the depth of one hundred meters. Bury Italy at the same depth. Empty all of your museums all around the world. Demolish every Greek building from all over the world. Then erase every Greek word from everywhere; from your medicine, your mathematics (geometry, algebra) your physics, chemistry, your astronomy, your politics and your daily life. Erase mathematics, erase all shapes, turn the triangle into an octagon, turn the straight line to a curve. Erase geometry from your buildings, your roads, your games, your cars. Erase the name of every illness and medicine, erase democracy and political sciences. Erase gravity and turn the world upside down. Rewrite all of your books (because they're stuffed with greek words). Erase from your daily life every Greek word. Rewrite the Gospels, change the name of Christ as it's Greek as well, meaning the one who has the chrism, the confirmation. Change the shape of every temple (not having the Greek geometry). Erase Alexander the Great. Erase all of your mythical and historical heroes. Change your education and the name of History as well. Change the names of your universities. Change your ways of writing, use the Arabic. Erase your philosophy. Erase, erase, erase… In the end you will say _*_“Impossible"_*_._ That's the amazing impact of the greek civilization on our lifes, more than 2,000 years now. Of course it is possible for you to prefer to *not* have all these in your life. But tell me, besides a code the persians had about slavery (which is simply overestimated, as *the vast Persian Empire was not created using milk, honey and silk*, but weapons and bloodsheds), what exactly the persians left behind that has an impact in your life today..?
@ethantaylor9613
@ethantaylor9613 8 жыл бұрын
you make several very good points. I would point out that under Roman rule the greeks continued to inovate. I would also say that Zoroastrian philosophy ha impacted our thoughts on what it means to be human and modern aberhamic faiths (without the whole subujgation of women thing) frankly, the Persians did many, many terrible things, but from what I know they were far more civil one the whole compared to most if not all of their rivals including the greeks. However perhaps I mispoke when I said "everything would be better, (my mistake) What I should have said was: life would get better for the underclasses of greece, and what a modern western person would call the "good guys" would have been victorius.
@franknwalters
@franknwalters 8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I should mention at this point that I have nothing against the persian history, which I very much respect. _"...Zoroastrian philosophy ha impacted our thoughts on what it means to be human..."_ Yes, but infront of the greek philosophy and the whole greek view of the world, it seems like a small white dwarf (star) infront of a bright galaxy. I mean the greeks even gave human defects to their gods, and they lifted the humans closer to them rather than downgrade the gods to the human level. Sorry but that's how the comparison seems to be. _"...life would get better for the underclasses of greece..."_ As we saw on the video above, there's a small debate on how a persian victory against the greeks would affect the course of history. This on theoretical basis of course, as no one doubts the impact of the greek civilization on the world, *and* considering the fact that *life itself* eliminates what can't be tolerated while eventually is keeping what is aiding human evolution. It's important that life itself chose the greeks and no some mastermind. So what would happen if the persians were victorious against the greeks. Can the romans who did conqured the greeks give us any clue? The romans for example were too tolerant on religious issues (*and the greeks too*). The Romans admired, respected & systematically studied the greeks and the greek civilization in almost all of its aspects. Therefore it’s safe to say that they treated the Greeks much differently than how the Persians would do if they had won the battle of Marathon. Yet the romans were *ruthless* against the greeks in every attempt to revolt. On the other hand Greek & Persian civilizations didn’t had that much in common. So the Romans conquering the Greeks can’t really give us an idea as to how life would be if the Persians did that before the Romans. Also what I believe is the very important is what J.S.Mill proposes (among all the other scholars) about the greeks: _“...The interest of Grecian history is unexhausted and inexhaustible. It is an heroic poem_ (an amazing thing to say about the history of a nation, that can be explained by his next words), _of which the personages are _*_peoples_*_...”_ He sees the greek history as a poem in which the characters, the protagonists are PEOPLES, which is absolutely true. The Greek civilization *did focus on man* in all of its aspects (even in religion), it was the first one to do such thing, and it is perhaps among the most important thing the greeks inherited to us. The Persian Empire could never let all these greek achievements delivered to the world, exactly because they would *never* allow them to develop, no matter how tolerant it was. Allowing the Greeks to develop a culture of rationality, creativity, innovation, science, and artistry under Persian rule, is like getting to bed with a scorpion. *No occupier* allows its vassals to develop tools that can be used to revolt against him. And need to mention that no civilization *ever* developed such characteristics while enslaved? And why the Romans did exactly that? Because the greeks were in decline... The Greeks at the point that got conquered by the Romans, were in decline and later probably (if this can be said) felt safe in the arms of an _“admirer”_ of that magnitude. On the contrary, during the 1st Greco-Persian wars and the centuries that followed they were at their best and a very dangerous rival. They most certainly would revolt against a persian rule. *It is certain* that the Persians would be merciless with the Greeks (for many other reasons too). This means no Parthenons (with all that this represents), no democracy, no mathematics, no philosophy, no, no, no, no, no, no... The underclass could live under better conditions or not. No one knows. *We need to see this in long terms*. Also, as I said in my previous post, the vast Persian Empire was vast not because of its tolerance. Need to mention that, for example, the Ionian revolt against the Persian rule, was *exactly because* they showed no tolerance? Also the cause of both the 1st and the 2nd Greco-Persian wars, it was the Persians showing *no tolerance*. In conclusion, as most agree, life today would be unrecognizable. *Any attempt* to tell how it would be, is like trying to guess the date and time of the first alien apearence in a Man United-Liverpool football game...

Well Good sir, I can tell you were only analyzing this historical point, and not the entire Persian History. Persia, especially in the Achaemenid dynasty had practice the early form of Democracy thanks to the previous head of their dynasty, Kourosh the second, or commonly referred to as Cyrus the Great (Who also was revered by the Greeks) and he was a king who practices giving all under his rule their basic human rights, that the United States (supposedly)currently practices. So if Persia conquers Greece, it wouldn't be so Black & White as you make it out to be, Truth is nothing real bad would happen, except for slave owners would be out of a job, and this true form of democracy would be continued to play its role for a long time, maybe new cultures would rise and spread the Persian's teachings, and maybe Zoroastrians would become the major religion and there probably would be less poor people because everyone would live in homes, no one would starve or be selfish. Let's just say if Persians ruled, Donald Trump wouldn't be insanely rich, he would be equal in wealth. Though we would still have a beloved monarch, so we wouldn't have elections, well until it becomes necessary. Anyway that's my thoughts.
@jacksonkeller4333
@jacksonkeller4333 8 жыл бұрын
A monarch with near unlimited power is not a part of a democracy, especially a monarch determined by bloodline. It sounds like the Persians were a great civilization, very tolerant, far a head of anyone else in human rights, but they were absolutely nothing like the democratic republic USA as far as governing system goes.
@bijanthegr91
@bijanthegr91 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're right, last I checked a Monarchy(or at least Persia) would do their best to keep their people safe, and almost free of crime. However this Republic of the USA seems to be trying to dismantle the amendment rights or making it difficult to continue practicing, because well my right to bare arms seems to be slowly striped away, at least here in California. So yeah, I do love Thomas Jefferson took inspiration from Cyrus, just wish Zoroastrianism was this country's faith because how hard is it to follow these rules "Good thoughts, Good words, and Good deeds" (Pretty hypocritically on my part, because it must be hard for me) So yeah, thanks for being civil with the comment.

Gustavo Larancia Alright, alright it wasn't democracy, but you have to admit their tolerant practices are the useful building blocks of a great civilization. I misunderstood the origins of how the Republic of the United States. I standby what I said about the Dynasty didn't believe in slavery, because Zoroastrians don't use slaves for their subjects, servants maybe, but at least their paid. As for POWs, I honestly would believe that they would sell them. I too doubted the cylinder was against the bill of sales of POWs, so you got me there. I also guess you could say it was wishful thinking that the technological advancement, because I have to admit without religious restriction Leonardo Da Vinci and other brilliant minds wouldn't have given us the inspiration to strive to make technologies of today. But don't forget the Baghdad battery, that was the reason I said the tech might have improve the west. Oh and the whole "No one would suffer" angle, again wishful thinking, because despite how perfect we humans claim we are, we're still humans, so corruption would always have a foothold in any society no matter how perfect we make it. Shit...I almost turned into an Emerich there, thanks for the criticism where it was needed.

The creators of this video are revisionists. Persia did not want to permanently occupy Greece. Only punish them for inciting revolts, and what we today consider terrorism, (burning of cities in Persia). They succeeded in doing so during the second invasion of Greece. The Persian expeditionary force won at Thermopylae, and then went on to capture the Greek "capital" (Athens). Shortly after they voluntarily abandoned Athens.

voluntarily abandoned Athens? They sacked the city, leveled the temples on the Acropolis then left because the city was dead. The entire population of Athens had either stockaded itself at the top of the Acropolis or taken to the seas in their ships to flee the city. There was literally zero reason to stay in Athens once it was sacked. The Persians stuck around invading their way through Greece fairly happily until they lost their supply vessels at Salamis to the Athenians. They were in no way planning to leave any time soon, especially not with the Athenian fleet hanging around and the Spartans sitting back behind the wall at Corinth having suffered almost no losses.

Greek culture would have a subtle influence into Persian culture, just as Persian culture did during the Hellenic period of Alexander. Persia, after occupying Greece for some time, would identify talented people and migrate them to Babylon to serve as its administrative subjects. It would eventually allow the Greek city states to govern themselves under close supervision as long as they paid homage and tribute to Persia. More assimilated Greeks would have been spread throughout the empire to settle and make a living bringing with them certain aspects of their culture. Depending upon if Persia continued staying an empire towards its expansion into western europe, there would be a different kind of empire than that of Rome as we know it. One with a mix of East and West cultures, with a desire to install tribute states rather than complete cultural dominion.

I really enjoy your videos AlternateHistoryHub, however, I think it would be best if this video was remade. Namely because of the large amount of information you leave out of it. Now before I go into the subject, I understand you probably won't give this much thought (or see this comment), because it is from one of your older videos. Regardless, I will write my honest opinion about the matter, and leave as many facts as I can to illustrate the situation. Most of my information comes from Herodotus himself. Although he is not the best source on the matter, it is one of the only sources who goes in great detail over the history of this time period. I'm not insulting your intelligence, I'm just saying that you probably didn't want to explore more into this subject, because if the Persians were successful, it is more than likely that our whole history would change, like you previously stated, and since your channel specializes in alternate history, a Persian victory would make it very difficult to predict. In the video you talk about the Ionian Revolt, which is a good start, but in my opinion, not the best. I believe the best part to start would be when Cyrus the Great conquered the Lydians, and therefore gained control over the Ionian Greeks. The usual form of government in the Greek world at this time was under tyrants, and their aristocratic friends who held all the power. Therefore many of the Ionian Greek city-states would be ruled by tyrants who answered to Persian rule. During this time before the Ionian Revolt, the Persians, and Greeks got along famously, especially because of their mutual hatred towards the Scythians who raided the "civilized" world. Herodotus writes about how Darius ordered an army into Scythia (modern day Russia) by going across the Danube River to attack the Scythians. The bridge built across the river was one built by the Greeks who were enthusiastic to help the Persians with their war. When it was certain the Persians wouldn't win this fight against the nomadic peoples of the Steppe, a Scythian rider came to the Greeks, and urge them to destroy the bridge. That way they could trap the Persians north of the Danube. This would allow the rest of the Persian army to be destroyed by attrition, and by the Scythians, however, the Greeks refused, and instead destroyed half of the bridge that way no Scythian could cross, and when the Persians returned, the bridge could be quickly rebuilt. Which it was. This act of loyalty shows the Greek opinion of their Persian rulers. If it was so bad, as commonly romanticized by public thought today, the Greeks would have destroyed the bridge, and "freed" themselves from Persia. In matter of fact the reason of the Ionian Revolt was not because of growing hatred towards the Persians, but of deception itself. The tyrant of Miletus: Aristagoras instigated the revolt. He had undertaken his own failed invasion of the Island of Naxos, and in doing so knew that he would be punished by the Persians for a number of reasons. In order to avoid punishment he stoked the flames of rebellion. After the Ionian Revolt was defeated, Persia changed the way the Greeks were governed. Which was most likely due to practical nature of seeing that tyrants were not the best way. The Persians did away with the tyrants ruling over the Ionian Greeks and installed democracies in the Greek city states instead. This is all recorded in Herodotus. In matter of fact, before the Ionian Revolt, Athens had sent a diplomat to the Satrap of Asia to form an alliance between the Persian Empire and the City-State of Athens, because the Athenians feared that the other tyrant ruled Greek city-states would help their former tyrant seek revenge against them. There was also a huge group of Athenians during the first Persian invasion who wanted to submit to Persian rule. That is why after the Battle of Marathon, Pheidippides was sent back to tell Athens that they had won at Marathon, so the group of Pro-Persian Athenians wouldn't surrender the city to the Persian fleet. Even during all parts of the Greco-Persian wars there were "Medizing Greeks", who were Greeks that supported Persia, and fought on their side. The most notable example was the city-state of Thebes who fought with the Persians at Plataea. So what we have when we start before the Ionian revolt, and a full view of the history between the Greeks and Persians, is a clear view of the political situation of the Greek City-States and their opinion of the Persians. So would the Persians have been likely to hold onto mainland Greece? More than likely, in matter of fact. The whole idea of a unified Greece, only came to be after the victory over the Persians. Would democracy have been destroyed? No, as the Persians maintained democracy in their Ionian city-states, they most likely would have continued to allow democracy in other Greek city-states on the mainland that wanted to practice it. Persian rule is famous for not caring about what their subjects do (in doing so they allowed freedom of religion, and culture), as long as their subjects paid their taxes. Thus that leaves the final question. What would happen? Alexander the Great would never defeat the Persians, therefore the major powers that would develop to challenge Persia would be the Romans, Carthaginians, and the Mauryan Indians. How would Persia react towards these threats from both corners of the empire? Well, I believe that question could be best left up to you.

I think the saddest moment of the Glorious Persian History wasn't Alexander conquests but Islamic conquests, how different the whole middle west will be if the Sassanids would have defeated the Rashidun Caliphate and remain as an independent Empire with his own religion

I love History! I'm not so sure, the celtic tribes weren't unified and they mostly fought with each other . This plays in to the whole "divide and conquer" strategy that is a huge reason why the newly formed American colonies were able to conquer the Native Americans.

Read the relevant part of 'The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World'. Though written in 1851, it has some intriguing ideas :)
