I don't think the USA would have to fall to communism for the USSR to win the cold war. It was just a matter of the soviets dominating the foreign policy and winning over more countries through police power until america had less allies and was faced with two options: warfare or cooperation on soviet terms. In fact many people thought the cold war wasn't going to end with the fall of the soviet union. They had assumed the soviet union would exist and that the cold war would end when the united states and soviet union agreed diplomatically for peace and began to maybe trade with each other. If that were the case one could argue that the age of global politics we live in today would not be one of the US as the world policemen, but the united nations with America and the Soviet Union working together to address certain issues in a way both parties agreed too.

Lots of misinformation on this page so I'll try iron some out: Socialism = Worker control of the means of production and commodities produced for need and distributed evenly. Capitalism = Private control of the means of production and commodities produced for sale in a market for the purpose of profit. There are different forms these economic systems can take, for example, you have State-Capitalism which is state-owned enterprises that produce commodities for a market for the purpose of profit (See China, the USSR and any state run enterprise in the west. ("Nationalized" businesses)) Free Market Capitalism which is privately owned business competing with each other in a market. (look at any private sector of any country) At the same time you have different forms of Socialism: State-Socialism = Working class takes over the state, nationalizes means of production and then produces goods for need. (What the USSR and China was SUPPOSED to be) Libertarian-Socialism = Working class take control of means of production, then run those businesses democratically from the bottom up, cooperating with each other in federations producing goods for need based on cooperation. (see Revolutionary Catalonia) Communism is the final state of humanity, it is when humans have finally overcome greed and inequality, produce goods we need in abundance and live happily. Communism is the next stage of humanity after Socialism as Feudalism > Capitalism > Socialism > Communism. (See Star Trek The Next Generation) The USSR, North Korea, China etc etc are NOT COMMUNIST, they don't even call themselves Communist. This is western propaganda to try slur an entire economic and political thought. While these countries are run by Communist parties, they are Communist in name only. The idea with Leninism is that a group of communist intellectuals would take over the state, then organize society into a form which then the working class could take over and implement Socialism. (in reality these "Communists" just hijacked the term to get into power, just like Fascists hijacked the term "Socialism" to get into power in Germany) The USSR, North Korea, China etc etc called themselves state-capitalist states on the transition to a Socialist economy. They weren't Socialist, let alone Communist.

Was it possible for the Soviets to win? Yes. However the Soviets winning doesn't mean the US has to go communist. Of course this all depends on how you define the struggle of the Cold War. Was it Democracy/Capitalism vs Totalitarian/ Communism, or was it simply a struggle for power between the governments of the United States and the USSR. Given the actions of both powers during the cold war I would have to say that the latter scenario is more true. So if we look at the Cold War in this way, we could have the Soviet Union win, with expanding global influence, and the US losing, meaning shrinking global influence. Basically I think a real American loss looks more like Isolationism then the US going communist. Despite all this I like what you are doing to give attention to a genre that is all to often ignored, and when it does appear it tends to be half assed. Continue the good work, and I look forward to more.

The poor in the USSR were doing far worse under communism than the poor in America. It was estimated that the poor of the USSR were 40 years behind the poor in America in terms of how much money they had and how many of them owned refrigerators and their quality of healthcare etc. Their healthcare was on par with that of Third World healthcare. 2/3 of Soviet poor people didn't get enough food to eat. The USSR collapsed due to this faulty system, as they couldn't spend on their military what the US spent on its, and the people of the USSR ultimately revolted.

The problem here is not the "Soviet economy" being the issue, aka Socialism. Here's REAL history; The problem was the Capitalist reforms that were implemented in the late '80s USSR that derailed their entire economy en masse. When the 90's roll around they are a full blown Liberal Democracy, with Milton Freidman's Capitalism full blown with the training wheels kicked off; millions dead in Russia and the former Soviet satellites from starvation after the Capitalist economy lost over 50% of their GDP, with some countries, like Ukraine for example, never recovering to even their level of GDP in the 80s Soviet Socialist economy. I suggest that you look into what socialism is before you paint all socialist ideologies with the same brush.

When Khrushchov made the first Market reforms in the 60's, the healthy economy inherited from Stalin's administration started to grow slower (but not collapsing) and when Gorbachov started his Perestroika, the economy started to collapse. You mentioned the situation really briefly on this video, but you should do a video on what would happen if the USSR did not enter afganistan! You could focus upon the mujadin and their role in the politics of afganistan and it's surrounding countries- and what would happen between the ussr and USA

Mr. zshdanavich probably means that he thought Chernobyl was not as important as the other factors. I disagree with him personally, but I do acknowledge the need to understand where he IS right. Overall, Chernobyl was a disaster for the people of Soviet occupied Ukraine at the time, and it really damaged the trust that the WORLD had towards the Soviets because they lied about it, and for the longest time, denied such an accident had happened. Internally, however, the information of the event was even more suppressed and stories turned into rumors discredited as lies far before information ever hit the public in major cities such as Leningrad and Moscow.

Soviet 'victory' in the Cold War would simply mean that the west accepts Soviet domination over the East Bloc forever and gives up military build-up to counter the Warsaw Pact, not a global communist revolution. That's what the USSR was mostly trying to achieve. This was almost accomplished in the 70s but in the 80s the tide shifted dramatically.

yes, communism was a complete failure, but it was *Stalin* who killed innocents who opposed him, not the economic system. but to be fair, if the USSR's government system was as strong as many governments in the First World, corrupt Stalin would've never abused his power in the first place
@Cosmalano9 жыл бұрын
Communism failed in the USSR because it was a subset of communism known as Marxist-Leninism or Stalinism. The "kewl" communism is Marxism. The two are vastly different and the major issue is that you can not transition from a capitalist society straight into a communist society. You need to have an intermediate socialist society and Marx made note of this when he came up with communism. The USSR never had this socialist period, and you could attribute their failures to that. That, and the terrible idea that was Stalinism. And yes, please attempt to patronize supporters of Marxism as your profile picture is a flower from Super Mario or the Joker. I didn't realize grown ups would be in the comment section.

I got my degree in Economics in 1977 and have read all the classics in the last 45 years. I know why Communism doesn't work, and Socialism does work if it is not applied too liberally. True, Free Market Capitalism will make the entire (overall) economy the biggest and best, but does leave a large percentage of people as "losers" who suffer greatly at the hands of the Free Market system. These people have to be taken care of (to a certain degree) otherwise true Capitalism would be horrid for about 70% of the population. Finding the right balance is the trick, except no two people can decide what this "right" balance is. That's where a lot of countries stand right now. Using the USSR to say that Communism 'doesn't work' is not fair because it was a dictatorial police state and not truly Communist anyway. True Communism works great in small groups like families, religious communes (Kibbutz) and the 1st Century Christians. In a larger State the people will shirk their duties and responsibilities every time it is tried. Human nature prevents true Communism from ever working, but in simulations (like Economic Models) where everybody works hard and doesn't try to game the system Communism works quite well. It just doesn't work with Human Beings, and THAT is a serious problem...
@ufodeath9 жыл бұрын
If you were serious about economics (not saying you aren't), you would have probably come across the alternative to capitalism long ago which is: Economic democracy, worker cooperatives, market socialism (the worker cooperatives directly compete in markets), and the abolishment of the state in favor for autonomous democratically managed communities. The key here is that all decisions that take place within the community or the workplace would be represented by individuals proportionate to how those decisions affect their life. So because all decision making processes are inclusive in this matter, this maximizes individual liberty to the greatest extent currently imaginable.

What a stupidly narrow minded thing to say that the USSR's economy is the reason it fell, they used that propaganda slang since the 1910's, it's literally 100 years old to say a Communist economy will not stand, but that's total bullshit because a Communist state needs no economy, the USSR fell because of shortage of foods, because Eastern Europe was falling apart. It's like saying protesters in Moscow during 1991 were anti-Communists, which is total bullshit, they protested for the return of true Communism, the spirit of the soviets didn't fall because they realized American imperialism was suddenly somehow morally right, their spirit fell because of the collapse of Eastern Europe gave them the feeling that they worked all those years for nothing. Americans will never understand the Russian mentality. Stop pretending you do.
@fable2omg9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as I said, he's narrow minded. He knows what happened to the USSR, not in the USSR. And he's trying to cover both.
@fable2omg9 жыл бұрын
Fine. but I'll always see him as intensely biased, because on one of his videos he started with "Today we know communism is evil, but it wasn't always that obvious". And that is a fundamental problem we have today, it's that nobody sees any alternative to capitalism anymore, and considering capitalism is currently crashing the same way communism did, this isn't good..

***** Stalin was Russia's first communist leader...
@ufodeath9 жыл бұрын
UberFlippy Why you are 'correct' Uber. Communism is stateless after all due to the goal of eliminating all forms of coercive, abusive or exploitative hierarchies. Communism is an anarchistic system, which democratizes businesses (turns them into worker cooperatives), democratizes communities, and runs off the principle that every decision that is made politically, socially, or economically, are made by individuals proportionate to how those decisions affect their lives. Anyone having power over others such as the type of feudalism you get with capitalism, or the bureaucracy you get with the state are abolished. Technically capitalistic businesses are not banned, they are just viewed as systems of wage-slavery in which people have no choice but to except their labor being exploited and self-management being restricted or otherwise starve. So USSR, china, etc, and any bourgeoisie ran economy are anti-communistic and anti-anarchistic in nature. In anarchism, you have no rulers, you manage yourself, and since power is equalized, people have the incentive to treat everyone else with mutual respect in order to for example run a successful worker cooperative, or improve the community, etc.
@ufodeath9 жыл бұрын
Andloo Yunty anti-communist leader you mean. The state is an anti-communist construct. Power is supposed to belong to the people directly. Communities are supposed to be autonomous. Businesses are supposed to be democratically operated by the workers directly. Healthy markets and other economic phenomena are an extremely vital function to this process.
