Hi folks! I’m Assiye (also known as Assi) and I’m the talker. After suddenly getting messages from people about the TEDx talk I decided to read your comments. I found that many of you were reacting to the same thing, namely the title. My original title was leaning towards a little more “cynical” direction. I wanted to say that the universe wasn’t created just for you, or us. Like, what if it wasn’t created just for you, but for many other life forms that probably does exist somewhere out there. I wanted to say that we are special (since we're the only life form known in the universe today), but at the same time nothing (because the number of exoplanets found so far is great and it would be silly to assume that we're the ONLY ones in the vast universe). But it had a somewhat negative tone so I couldn't use it... Regarding the zipper, yes, I know. Nothing to do but to move on (even though I found it really embarrassing from the beginning). And yes, I do have an accent (English is my fourth language), but hopefully it is understandable. I’m not from India but from Turkey (I’ve heard India before). The info in the description is also wrong, I know. Can’t do anything about it. So, that was basically it :) Even though I didn’t want to read the comments from the beginning I gave it a shot, and boy, it really made it clear how different we all are regarding our opinions and how we share our thoughts (duuuh, it's the internet, obviously expectable hehe). Cheers!

Ohhhh thank you for answering so quickly. I was dying to read about it! Also, don't bother with people bitching about your accent, most of them probably speak one language with serious limitations to grammar. (Their/they're, your/you're etc.) Have a great weekend. Also you're hot

Go to a Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber music video and you'll see millions upon millions of views, but go to a video concerning an intelligent topic that expands your mind and challenges you to learn something and I see only 115 views, no comments. It really is a shame, is it not? I once read a quote "When the world looks up to scientists, physicists and teachers the way they do with hollywood actors and pop stars, the world will take its next great step forward." I hope I can live to see that day within my lifetime. 😕

The problem is our capitalistic consumerist society. People are conditioned to look up to & idolise "celebrities". The brainwashed masses believe that they too could be the next big celebrity & make tonnes of money. The lady gagas of this world are used as products as well. How much does the average scientist, teacher etc. make compared to these mediocre entertainers? Not much at all. That's a huge problem. Not to mention there are many intelligent people on this planet that lack the resources to become scientists & the next big problem solvers.

+Highway Phantom The worst part about this sad truth is that, without science we would still be living in caves. All of human wealth is and will be created by science and its results. If we had a larger portion of or even all of humanity collaboratively engaged with scientific or other kinds of creative endeavours, all of humanity would probably become immortal and reach a true utopia within less than a century. The big question is then, how can we get people on board to empowering their individual selves and humanity when even policy makers are blindfolded when it comes to reality?

I know what you mean and I ask myself the same question. That's why I only have scientists as my role models, I don't look up to singers, actors etc. Sure, they are good at what they do and work hard, that's great. But a scientist is something different...

Amazingly brave. Courage is knowing the danger and feeling the fear but still meeting the challenge head on. You did what few can find the courage to do. You stood up in front of the world and delivered what could eventually be so hard for us humans to contend with, rampant wide skepticism. It’s not so important the message delivered as the courage and bravery to deliver it. I‘m truly inspired. Thank you.

Assi, you are star! I just stumbled upon your talk while I was looking at some interesting Tedtalks today. I am an astronomy enthusiast and I recently moved into a rural part of the country of my residence to live deep within a fantastic game reserve here in Africa, away from city lights etc. I enjoy nearly daily home visits of neighbourly elephants and other friendly wildlife, but what I treasure more about my bush life is that it affords me a "front role" view of the night sky and, armed with a basic telescope, the feeling of awe you describe can be very overwhelming. Being so intimately close to nature combined with having an obstructed observation of the universe is such a surreal experience! I have seen visitors cry from the overwhelming emotions from the intimate experience here, as it's not a typical Safari type setup but more designed to let the visitor be at one with the nature, not observing it at a distance. I therefore couldn't find the title of your talk more appropriate--albeit not at the sentence level but necessarily at the semantic level! Due so some intimate encounters I have had with eg the big five, the question of purpose always crosses my mind. I know it's outside the scope of your talk, but it the immersive experience one gets here with nature certainly feeds ones curiosity. BTW you are welcome anytime here to experience it for yourself!

In regards to your comment about exploring Enceladus, instead of Mars. As a Portuguese, this reminded me of the first maritime explorers (the "astronauts" of ancient times). Everybody was so fixated in finding a sea route to India, that they totally ignored a whole continent! Mars is important and obvious....but why not thinking "out of the box" and open up to other possibilities? It is certainly interesting to see someone with a explorer mindset AND the courage to express her opinion in public - that is different from the mainstream scientific community! THAT was a refreshing part of this presentation. Respect for that!

I thought the title would lead to a deeper story (I'm not saying your universe isn't deep ;) ). We all look at the world with our own eyes. Because of our many problems and desires, we forget that fact. But sometimes, when we think of it, we think that the whole world is made for us. And that everyone is experiencing the same thing.

I think beyond a certain distance, we won't hear anything even if there is life out there. The further you look the further back in time you're looking also. So you could be looking back too far in time, to a time when any Alien life has yet to create technology. If you were there though, now, they may have, of course, be very advanced but as nothing can travel faster than light then we wouldn't know until some time in the distant future. So, that means we should look at a shorter distance that makes sense on a time scale. This in its self also creates a problem as there may be no other life within that short distance but still doesn't mean there isn't other life out there. Time is a tricky thing, more so when we have such great distances to think about. So finding the right approach isn't an easy one. Great talk. I hope we find life within my lifetime, that would be amazing. I, just as the speaker has, have seen a galaxy through a telescope and although not to a level she herself has seen, still an amazing feeling and as she mentioned, one that i will never forget!

I remember the first time I saw Saturn through a telescope. I was just a teenager. Our telescope was a home-made six-inch reflector. Cobbled together from spare parts around our farm. Pretty funny. The counter weight was the rim of a spare tire, and the small viewfinder was a gunsight from a rifle. But I'll never forget that night. I didn't even know what I was seeing. I pointed the telescope at a bright light in the night sky. I saw that it was oblong, an oval. I looked at it for several nights, wondering what it was. Then I realized it was Saturn. Nothing compares to that first moment when you first look through a telescope and see the moon, or the satellites of Jupiter, or Saturn. You can look up pictures on the internet, but nothing compares to seeing it yourself. Huddling in the snow, looking through a telescope made of old car parts and a rifle scope. It was amazing.

@VanillaSwag yes. when you don't look nothing needs to be said. Just the act of trying to explain something is misleading. you can look at it is in everything is divine or everything is unnecessary. It's the same thing. Personally I think it's quite beautiful and find it to be so magical that I can't see how anyone could be more than just a little upset from time to time.. because once they really become conscious they see that they are in control and it's an everyday, every moment thing. Controlling our thoughts is the hardest thing and that's what really misleads everyone

Last night in my dream the word dry hydrogen chloride came to me. Researching more it says "Hydrogen chloride forms corrosive hydrochloric acid on contact with water found in body tissue. Inhalation of the fumes can cause coughing, choking, inflammation of the nose, throat, and upper respiratory tract, and in severe cases, pulmonary edema, circulatory system failure, and death. Skin contact can cause redness, pain, and severe skin burns. Hydrogen chloride may cause severe burns to the eye and permanent eye damage.". Cardiovascular Ingestion of concentrated hydrochloric acid or massive skin exposure to either hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride gas may cause low blood pressure as a result of gastrointestinal bleeding or fluid displacement. After acute exposure, pulmonary function generally returns to baseline in 7 to 14 days. There is no antidote for hydrogen chloride poisoning. Treatment consists of support of respiratory and cardiovascular functions. Patients exposed only to hydrogen chloride gas whose clothing and skin are dry do not pose a risk of secondary contamination. Hospital personnel can be secondarily contaminated by patients exposed to hydrochloric acid either by direct skin contact or through inhalation of vapor off-gassing from heavily soaked clothing or skin. Patients do not pose contamination risks after contaminated clothing is removed and the skin is washed. Other effects of exposure include shock, circulatory collapse metabolic acidosis, and respiratory depression. Most seriously exposed persons have immediate onset of rapid breathing, blue coloring of the skin, and narrowing of the bronchioles. Patients who have massive exposures may develop an accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Exposure to hydrogen chloride can lead to Reactive Airway Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS), a chemically- or irritant-induced type of asthma 'When hydrogen chloride dissolves in water, hydrochloric acid is formed. Hydrogen chloride is a colorless, corrosive, nonflammable gas that fumes in air. It has a characteristic pungent odor. It is heavier than air and may accumulate in low-lying areas." Is it possible someone has placed this in the water or inhaling what they are spraying chems in the air other possibilities? Just an odd thought in my dreams. Brain storming here!

Finding life.. Following childhood desire.. Awesome.. Good luck in your way :) But I always wonder why it took so many years for us to say that plants too have life and the only reason that I could come up is we were looking life in a different perspective/description. So the whole idea of life was confined to mobility and features of the things around. Hence Plants, the thing which we see every day in life took years to get "living" status just becoz they lack mobility and features like us :) Then how long it will take for us to identify life far away from us unless we open up ourselves to new dimensions.

The childhood desire is still with be, after all these years. But I wanted to search for life on Mars from the beginning, but then I found Enceladus and now I'm stuck ^_^ My master thesis (working on it now) is about CFD calculations with data from Mars Curiosity lander, so that's linked to my childhood :) I agree! And the hard part about life is that we only know how it looks like based on what we have seen here. I can't imagine what strange and interesting creatures that exists out there. I hate not knowing it!! It is there, but where is it?

It might be relatively close and have lot of 20th century fiction written about it but the moons are much better candidates for scientific exploration on several levels which I wish she had gone into a bit more details about.

Misleading title. Imo the video is way better than what the title was trying to sound like.

Oops! I thought I would hear something else. The title is misleading. Okay. I've a question then. Why we always search for the planet which is so far? Why don't just figure out the planet which is closer to us if there is some life* on that? e.g. Mars, Jupiter... I've a feeling that on every planet there is a life. They are just in different form. Life is nothing but what we say "consciousness". Whatever is conscious, we can call them alive. I talk to some tree I know the tree is conscious. I talk to some stars and I guess they can hear me. Who knows if they are conscious. Who knows if there is a life on our Sun. It's not necessary that creatures on Sun should have physical appearance like humans or something. They just live in fire. They can be conscious in different ways.

The Moon and Mars would be used like stepping Stones to the cosmos, and we could have some amazing telescopes on the moon with powerful cameras beaming pictures back to Earth.

All of who you are, your history, your personality, is written upon your soul, the part of God that is you. We are told that when your soul leaves this plane of existence, it can wander to other planes, more filled with light and joy, than the Earth plane.

Either the speaker wasn't prepared for this, or over prepared or nervous, (which is fine). Its a great subject I wish I could have got more info out of this. What I would like is any form of read out of the speakers thoughts any hypothesis.

It's an inept presentation of an otherwise fascinating subject on which there are literally thousands of far more interesting talks on youtube alone. Not to mention the countless volumes of literature easily available via numerous means. TEDx talks are usually low-rent versions of infinitely superior TED talks by actual scientists, not the random walk-in student that couldn't even spell astronomy till two weeks ago but now thinks she has the answers to humanity's biggest questions.

We all are different, experiencing reality in our own ways. But we all are individually so personal in our own mind. We all are isolated. I can never know what you see and think. Maybe you see what I see but never know what you think. We all are separate by large gaps. Maybe if everything is halucination then maybe others are not having any mind at all. I am only conscious. This is known as solipsism.

why are we trying to look for a two way communication when we could be looking for others like a time capsule, yes that would mean they might have died out but at least we would know we aren't the only ones and there could be others out there
