The Vikings sailed everywhere, even to Canada. But they eventually left. What if in an alternate timeline, the Vikings had stayed and continued their colonization of the New World? Here is one scenario.

Or that all happens just alot sooner then it actually did. Especially if the Pope decides they need to be Christianinized as he did in the case of the baltics. In which case you may get tuetons riding up through the Americas. In which case they bring the very plagues that nearly destroyed native culture with them and basically do the same thing.

Vikings definitely settled and intermingled with the cultures they conquered; Ireland is a strong example. The town of Waterford was a Viking trade outpost, which has since become a major city, in great part due to the Viking trade network. The Vikings often intermarried, and primarily were traders and sailors, though they were very effective raiders. It was likely the early conflicts in Vinland were due to a complete inability to communicate; language that was so different it was impossible to translate.

Not quite. Remember, Cody said the Norse didn't have the numbers that post-1492 Europe had. If anything, the Americas would be more indigenous, with a white minority a la South Africa. You'd still have Nordic mestizos, but they'd culturally and religiously be more Beothuk, Innu-Aimun, Naskapi, Cree, Abenaki, etc. than European.

I've read that Eric the Red and his viking companions traded with the Naitives, and in that trade they gave them some of their Scandinavian milk. But the Naitives were lactos intolerant and thought that the vikings had tried to poisen them, so they attacked the vikings, making them retreat to Greenland. They visited the island some times later though, but just to gather wood, not to settle.

The last written records from Greenland are from 1408. Whether this is "long before Columbus" at 1492 is a matter of perspective. The timing of the ultimate loss of the settlement is not known though (the 1408 record was a random marriage).

You're thinking of Leif Ericsson. Eric the Red was his father. And there's no reason why the Norse and Beothuk couldn't have traded peacefully. Each had commodities that the other needed and wanted. The reintroduction of horses and the adoption of ironworking would be a game-changer for the Beothuk because they could now go about conquering other tribes that had no iron or horses. Maybe one or more Amerindians could join Norse crews on raids in Europe. For all we know, that could have ultimately led to Harald Hardraada conquering England instead of William of Normandy doing it.

I like this take on the scenario, but there's one very important element you left out: disease. Would the near wipeout of the Native American population be so bad in this scenario, since the Vikings are not actively claiming more land? Could the natives recover their populations before the Age Of Colonization occurred, presenting a much stronger resistance to them?

I think if this were to happen, Native populations would be introduced to European diseases much earlier. So by the time the age of colonialism came around natives would have already experienced European diseases and acquired immunity. Populations would have had hundreds of years to rebound and there's a good chance that large native populations would still exist throughout the continent today.

It doesn't work that way. Also contrary to popular believes this huge pandemic was caused by native disease, and Europeans simply have a medicine. Only smaller epidemics were caused by Europeans and generally they also were a victims.

TheRezro How doesn't it? Also you should check your sources about the disease thing because that is just not true. It defiantly wasn't Native Diseases that killed the Natives since its a known fact that precolonial America was relativly disease free. It was documented what killed them, it was Europeans who unknowingly introduced the bubonic plague, the Flu, Cholera, the common cold, measles, chickenpox ,typhoid, TB, typhus, and the most deadly of them all smallpox all at the same time.
@TheRezro

@Mleew "Also you should check your sources about the disease thing because that is just not true." First of check yourself the sources, because it is exact the opposite as you just repeat common myth like that Columbus discovered America, what he didn't. "since its a known fact that precolonial America was relativly disease free" And that conclusion come from what sources? Because as far I recall there is no historical sources before arrival of Europeans so that conclusion is simply from nowhere. You mistake fact that "number or arrest decrees" with the "crime rate decrees" when as well first can be result of corruption because the opposite to second. ""it was Europeans who unknowingly introduced the bubonic plague, the Flu, Cholera, the common cold, measles, chickenpox ,typhoid, TB, typhus, and the most deadly of them all smallpox all at the same time. First of.. Europeans also die on those disease, and people claiming that we are immune are idiots. Immunity in most cases kill the wirus preventing it from spreading. Secondary.. well.. in fact smallpox was used as form of biological weapon so not always unknowingly, but simple fact is that according to real research it kill 8 mln people in Central Mexico. And most other diseases far less. And Flu and common cold generally don't kill, except rare strains what also hit Europeans. But now the thing.. a pandemic what decimate over 14-17 milion of people in Central Mexico was.. Cocolizatli. It is extremely dangerous native American disease what was in fact main reason for most of the deaths in whole America. The irony is that it target specific genes of Indian, so Europeans were largely immune and so incorrectly presume own responsibility, until proper resorach proved the opposite. But yes.. it is always easier to blame white people.

The impacts on indigenous peoples weren't discussed, but let's see what there is. First: Horses! They would inspire cultures on the Great Plains to take to nomadism far, far sooner than they did in our timeline. In our timeline, the transition to nomadism helped lead to the collapse of the Mississippian trade networks and power structures. They would decentralize North America even more from a landscape perspective, but might lead to more tight-knit polities generally. How the Iroquois, Ojibwa, or Powhatan peoples would deal with this is a huge question. Horses would also alter the balance of power in Central America, but it what direction we will never know. We also don't know how this might impact the West Coast, which was somewhat isolated by the mountains from what was happening to the east. Would horses make their way over there? How would that disrupt the densely-populated, highly fragmented politics of the West? Second: Food! Along with the introduction of pack animals - horses, donkeys, and cows - comes new food in the form of chickens, pigs, dairy, and wheat. Not all cultures in Eurasia took up milk-eating, but the introduction of such a wide range of new food sources could lead to an agricultural revolution among the peoples who practiced agriculture. Third: Disease! Not only would there still be disease transfer from the Old to the New world, but the new populations and relative isolation would make opportunities for new diseases and mutations that would go back to Eurasia, something that didn't happen in our timeline. It would also give North Americans a chance to recover from the apocalypse that was European colonization, positioning them to something more akin to Africans during the Age of Colonialism. Not that colonization wouldn't happen at all, but the vast disruption of social structures that facilitated colonization just wouldn't have occurred. Fourth: Technology! If the Scraelings and Norse conducted some trade, there's a chance that knowledge of ironworking would eventually pass out of the Norse and into the local people. North Americans had limited knowledge of metalworking, as the metals they could work weren't useful for tool-making so it wasn't important to obtain that knowledge. Iron didn't proceed throughout Eurasia quickly, but if a people group in the Northeast took advantage of the innovation it could at least spread through the East, potentially influencing the Ojibwa, Siouan, Innu, and Iroquoian peoples.

You are missing a very imortant factor. How did Hernan Cortes conquered Mexico, a country with +1M people with just 1400soldiers? Gunpowder was not very important. It was because he allied himself with many local tribes that were under the rule of the aztecs. Similar thing could happen up in the North. Eventually they just substitute thr local ruling tribes, thanks they are just a little less cruel than local tribes (remember that aztecs liked to do human sacrifices and to eat the hearts of the beaten enemies, they even didnt conquer a region close to their capital on purpose, so they could raid said region for fun and trainning)

Not really. The area that they were in had no great empires to lop the head off of and take over. Mostly it was various arctic and sub arctic tribes who due to climate were mobile hunter gatherers. That strategy might have worked better on a Mississippian chiefdom but that's much farther south. You cant just take over tribes like you can state societies.

Christopher Columbus was a great explorer who helped civilize the heathen tribes who liked to murder, oppress, and eat each other. Truly, all the natives should thank the Spanish for introducing true religion, hospitals, schools, and civilization, in general. If Columbus didn't come, the "advanced" natives of America would've gone the way of the Anasazi, the Moche, and the Easter Islanders; they all murdered and ate each other, leaving only ruins.

The Norse who reached Vineland came from Greenland via Iceland - an neither of those islands had a large enough population to sustain endemic diseases. Thus the Vikings had none of the diseases that later devastated the Native Americans. This lack of immunity among the small population of Iceland lead to pandemics amongst the population when visited by ships from Western Europe right up to the 18 century.

A few quick points: 1. In our timeline, Vinland was essentially a colony of a colony. It had plenty of big trees, which Greenland lacked. Of course, if Vinland actually grew popular, it could easily eclipse the Greenland colony...but that doesn't change how it would have to struggle on Greenland's support until Vinland fever caught on. 2. Greenland is called that because its fjords (the places most people lived) _were_ green with grassy meadows and whatnot. 3. Given the independence of the Greenland colony, I'd be surprised if any mainland Scandinavian power had much influence over Vinland. Granted, part of that was because nobody cared about Greenland, especially once access to elephant ivory reduced the value of walrus ivory, but part of that was because Greenland was just ridiculously far away from anywhere. Vinland would be more valuable and worth caring about, but also even farther away. I can see Scandinavian powers _trying_ to exert control over Vinland, but I doubt they'd see great success. The colonial governors would probably have far, far more sway in Vinland than proclamations from one king or another. 4. I don't know much about the circumstances around the formation and dissolution of the Kalmar Union, the union of the Scandinavian kingdoms from around 1400 to sometime in the 16th century, but since this is a scenario which has the potential to bring more power to Scandinavia, it might be worth looking into. An alt-history where Denmark claims more power, forms the Kalmar Union, and can keep it stable would be much different than one where the Union can never be brought into existence.

Lots of variables could factor in on this. America may have been late to come into WW1 but they gave a huge morale boost to the worn out Allies in the Western Front when troops started pouring into Europe. Without them out of the picture, Germany might have exploited this to create a better deal in their favor, post war rather than dealing with the Treaty of Versailles which would eventually lead to the rise of Nazi Germany and WW2. Soo idk man.

Few Things I would like to say about the video 1 The Vikings might actually make a comeback and survive in this timeline. The Natives are Polytheistic, and they have a safe heaven for there Pagan Viking culture that the Christian Kingdoms in Europe Don't know about 2 The New world has Exotic Berries and foods, so if the Vikings could sell those foods for money in Europe, That means the Vikings can get so much equipment to keep any colony alive. 3 Vikings in America also affects Viking colonies in Iceland and Greenland. If the Vikings stay in Vinland, and it remains a stable colony, Iceland and Greenland would actually grow in this timeline. Iceland grows due to it's green weather, and also for Vikings to start colonizing, but urbanization booms in Iceland by new coming Vikings. 4 As for Greenland, there's something Cody got wrong in the video. The era in history was the Medieval warm period, and the Greenland colony actually had a good amount of settlers. All they would have to do is stick near the coast, and they would be fine, it would be warm enough to survive. Meaning people can go from Greenland back to Vinland easily. The colony in Greenland ended because of two things, one the Little ice age that started a bit later, but most importantly Inuit colonizers went south and warfare occurred between both of them. But if they get more people from both advances in technology, and being a hub to vinland, the Inuits can't drive the Vikings out of Greenland, and Greenland can be further colonized by the Vikings. 5 One thing I really need to point out was that Vinlands resources would have been REALLY an advantage to the Vikings. I can't express it enough. And wanna know what it is? *BEAVER BOIIIIII* The Native americans have been living here for thousands of years, and the wildlife in the Americas would have really helped the vikings. 6 For example as I was saying the beaver. If the Vikings could hunt the beaver with their already good weapons, and Native american hunters, they could kill a lot of beavers, and get a lot of warm beaver fur. And umm you know what that would be good for *A COLONY IN GREENLAND* Beaver furs would make any bad condition in any colony more than bearable. Not to mention all the firewood they could use for fires. They could also sell things like Moose antlers, and Bear skin. 7 This also affects the Native americans in such a huge way. One thing Cody failed to do in this 7 minute video was state how the Viking technology would have impacted the Natives heavily. Guess what the Vikings had? *METALWORKING* A Iron tipped Bow and arrow will go faster, farther, and do more damage than a flint tipped one. A Iron tipped spear will do more damage and have better range than a flint one, Iron shield would be a good defense, and Iron or chainmail armor even a better idea, and why not add a small metal dagger or sword while we're at it? The Local Native tribe they forge friendly relations with means that when trading, the Natives have superior technology now compared to the rest of the Two American continents. This means two things. 8 Number 1 Natives when hunting food or encountering a bear or pack of wolves, they can not only hunt more effectively and faster, but have less risk. Leading to a population boom, and without worry of Animals like Bears and Wolves because of their new technology means that the land they've hunted can be colonized by the Tribe. And number 2, The New tribe in contact with the Vikings now have the ability to defeat any tribe it wants in warfare. All this weaponry and armor means the Natives now have a drive to expand. And they have the power to do that. With Ships, Viking Ships, they can also fish way more effectively, and more importantly can navigate river systems, and the best of all, travel across the shores. It would be way more efficient by sailing than trekking with one's feet. So if some guy decides to sail a boat, and gets lost, I don't know, he might end up in the Aztec empire, or Amazon Rainforest the next month. And Speaking of which, you know what Europe has? *HOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS BOIIIIi* 9 Vikings with their Ships can transport Animals, and the most important of which is Horses. Now if the Local tribe who encounter the Vikings can trade horses, and breed them, this tribe, is now the Most powerful In the Americas. Combining the horses mobility with the technology the Tribe now has, and you get a extremely powerful tribe. I want to imagine a Bull plowing fields in Vinland, until it charges and escapes. That Bull now becomes the most powerful animal in the ecosystem. Same with any animal that comes to Vinland. If it escapes, or is bred for decades that a few escape and they meet each other and breed, those animals can then join the ecosystem, and disrupt the tens of thousands years of circle of life. Also Kinda want to see a Part series on this, Like What happens After? How does this Affect America, England, France, Spain, and the world with these Vikings. Do the Natives near the sphere of influence of Vinland have immunity to disease?

Greenlandia Vikings never died, the same way Germanic tribes never died, they just slowly developed into organized Kingdoms due to the need of centralization in order to avoid being conquered by a bigger Kingdom. Also, they still would have been Christianity due to the fact that Norway and Denmark are still connected to Europe, if the mother country converts then most likely the colony would convert. If the Norway and Denmark doesn't convert, then I guess the Teutonic Order has a second place to go to. Mercantilism doesn't exist during the age of the Vikings yet, even if the Berries had some value only the rich could afford them as luxury goods, in this time period the majority of the population definitely wouldn't have been spending their money on berries. If only the rich good afford them (assuming they wanted them) then the wouldn't be as making much money as you think, some merchants selling these berries could have become rich, but certainly not enough money to push the Kingdoms of Norway and Sweden any farther ahead of any other European trade power (I.E. Venice, Byzantium)

If you follow the lineage from the Vikings, who seized Normandy and became influential all over Europe! Some even argue that the way they settled their differences with weapons in hand played a major role throughout medieval age and it was their lust of concurring new land, instead of always just divide the land they already owned between sons, that eventually lead to the Crusades! It's actually quite interesting to see how lineages go back to the Normans and back to the Vikings! Vikings were after new land, but they didn't mind assimilating - so that's basically what happened to the Vikings! They spread all over Europe and eventually assimilated into other cultures - and others stayed at home and spend the rest of the time fighting eachother.... Today, we try to settle our differences over a game of soccer or handball - but there's actually traditions we keep alive - and don't forget how we influenced language as well, today it's Thor's day and tomorrow it's Freya's day!

It's interesting what you say because if there would be a good amount of rare or luxurious resources likely to trade from Vinland trough the merchant routs of vikings to Arabia or Persia, the benefits surely would make the northen of Europe richer and perhaps the renacense may had change from Italy to the Baltic sea. If the skil road, with it's risks and long distances, was profitable, a rout for comerce in the north, then trough Rusia, would be possible.

Post-Soviet Finland would be poor compared to Western Europe, just like the post-communist states of Eastern Europe in OTL, and would have an enormous Russian minority (probably 30-40% like in Estonia and Latvia) and would lag decades behind in economic growth and development of every kind due to the wholesale slaughter of the Finnish intelligentsia that would've happened had Finland fallen under communist rule.

The thing is, with almost 500 years to spread out, the Scandinavians would have a lot of time to multiply and spread out. Along with European diseases wiping out 90% of the native population as in our timeline, I think that already by 1500 there would be a massive empire along the eastern seaboard with high population, much like the British 13 colonies. This would snowball into a massive advantage for whichever Scandinavian country managed to get a hold of it. Scandinavia would probably unite like England and Scotland did because of this, and the new Nordic Empire would likely industrialize first. Already in our timeline, 17th century Sweden was a powerhouse, needing Russia, Poland, and Prussia to gang up on it to be defeated. With these massive resources, Nordic Empire would be the dominant power on the continent. We might very well all be speaking Norwegian or Swedish today, instead of English. Leif Errickson would be the dominant figure of history.

Christian Dauz The assumption here was that the Nordics would not have integrated with the natives, a somewhat reasonable assumption given the vast differences. I highly doubt that Icelanders have any native American blood, since Iceland was uninhabited at the time of colonization, a thousand miles from native American populations, and almost exclusively settled by Norwegian and Danish settlers with Celtic slaves.

You guys seriously overestimate the intracontinental communication in pre-colonial America. 80% of tribes there had little to no contact with any outside groups. Couple that with the fact that the impact of the post-Columbine pandemics has been _grossly_ overblown for political purposes (things were _much_ worse in Australia, for instance) or even the recent findings that much of the disease were actually native to the Americas and their subsequent spread all over the continent was only facilitated rather than directly caused by the European arrival and you get a pretty revisionist picture of history.

>european diseases Again, no, the diseases came from seals in the northwest of North America, not from Europeans. The "European disease" meme was created to account for all the dying "natives" (actually Asiatic, but that's beside the point), and it just so happened that the diseases started wiping the natives around the same time that the Whites showed up. Can you please do a video on would if France won the seven years war? It would be very interesting because the Britain gained many benefits that were crucial to world history. They gained Canada, and an even bigger foothold in the American colonies. Plus they forced the French out of India. I think the course of world history would be changed if Britain lost this war.

I actually disagree. A hybrid culture is likely. As Cody states, the most integral part of Vinland's early colonial development would be having amicable relations with natives. Many tribes of the north east and eastern Canada participated in betrothals of their women to allied tribes. To refuse the offer was often considered a great insult. What would probably happen is that many viking MEN would arrive first, and the natives seeing this would trade for European technology by trading to the vikings, blankets, fruits and game from further south or inland, and women. This could very well lead to a Norse culture slowly morphing in a syncretic culture the more people of mixed race began proliferating through the colony. Also since the concept of racial superiority really wasn't a thing with vikings, we can assume that a bunch of sexually deprived male vikings would have no qualms in taking native brides, or at least bearing children with them. I think a people like the Metís of Canada would eventually develop, where mixed people start proliferating with other mixed people, further blending the culture of the two people. Because Neither vikings or natives of that region were very big on missionary work, their religions would probably stick to their own ethnic groups for the most part. However, as I stated with the intermixing, having a mother and father of differing faiths could lead to an interesting and new religion altogether.

Very good analysis! And if we look at the usual behavior of Vikings, they did show great willingness to assimilate into other cultures! If I recall correctly I even think that one of the sagas, or stories around the sagas mentioned something about Vikings taking a native as a wife, (volunterly or not).. 😉 And I think there's DNA evidence at Iceland supporting this!

Actually what you said is very unlikely, such a small population being integrated would mean their culture dying totally. It is like Sparta being integrated by Romans, their culture being totally obliterated, remaining only buildings... Actually it would be even worse. And the kids would in their majority take the religion of their fathers, nordic paganism was not that cool with different religions, and after three generations of breeding with natives approximately, the viking phenotype would be already long gone, so they would be basically natives. A conflict with them it would be way more likely, vikings were not chilling fellas, and neither were the natives.
@phosfer7853
@phosfer7853 6 жыл бұрын
Except this is a unique situation as the Scandinavians had useful knowledge and resources to exchange. Domestic animals, fruits & crops, and the knowledge of blacksmithing. All these things would have revolutionised pre-Columbus America - like it did when we came later. I suspect this would have given the Scandinavian culture and people a higher status in this hybrid society as they would have been a great boon to the skraelings.
@phosfer7853
@phosfer7853 6 жыл бұрын
Your example of Sparta is bogus because they practically wiped themselves out by being too conservative, and unpragmatic. They would not allow outsiders into their society, and when the Romans eventually came they were the size of a village and easily subdued.

Vikings meant bloodshed and pillaging - yes, Cody, but they also were traders, using the sailmanship you also remark, and if the Vikings had stayed in Newfoundland, i.e., brought their families with them, just like some of their ancestors the Anglo-Saxons did in the 6th century on the British Isles, they might have set up a colony that would have had better chances to survive than the settlers in Greenland. The climate that had been so benevolent and warm during the 8th-11th centuries, which might have been the triggering fact to the Viking expansion, became colder in the late middle ages and was one of the factors that brought the Scandinavian settlements in Greenland to their extinction. However, the Vinland colony would not suffer that fate but have been a rescue to the Greenlandic settlements. Also, it is unlikely that the Vikings wouldn't interact with the locals just like it happens everywhere else when Europeans met indigenous populations in other continents. Despite their differences, there were also similarities to the natives of present-day East Canada, like tribal division of society, low social stratification, a culture of warriors, and a good adaptation to the extreme climates close to the polar circle; the newcomers in Newfoundland would have respected the natives for that and might have closed marriage bonds and mixed blood with the locals. And once that happens, any kind of exchange of culture, language, economy, technology, is possible.

@TheRezro
@TheRezro 6 жыл бұрын
@GorillaGuerilla Yes, both.. generally they did that in the North and West Europe, but in this same time they were themselves highly influenced by Frankish culture and Christianity. Though Ireland, Scotland and Walls are Celts.. only England (Anglo-Saxons) and Normans (I remind that England own North France for a while, so that was more a civil war then invasion) have Germanic origin.
@me5969
@me5969 6 жыл бұрын
well i know in Britain at least they stopped rading because they turned to Christianity instead of the Norse gods and married Anglo women (hence the high red hair hate in the UK, apparantley red heads spring up more across Viking trade routes but some of that will be the Celts as well). So given the dominance of that religion and the fact the Vikings wernt "connected" so to speak, it's likely Rome (or anyone) would have just united everyone like the crusades and got them anyway. Plus the Anglo Saxon war lords actually already started to do that under St.Georges cross and they did actually holt the Viking invasion, which is actually how England united. So it's likely they would have either all turned to Christianity at some point anyway just like the barbarians before them or been defeated by a united army just out of sheer lack of organisation more than anything.. In my opinion.
