What if the Xbox Handheld Is Real? - Unlocked 638

Based on a recent interview, it seems like Phil Spencer has been thinking a lot about a possible Xbox handheld. We discuss what we'd want from it - noting that we would VERY MUCH want it - and wonder if it could end up being a Switch-like replacement for the Series S in the next console generation. Plus: Elder Scrolls 6 is already playable at Bethesda, but we're hoping the team is doing some serious updating to the Creation Engine. And finally, we talk about Toys for Bob's new game deal with Microsoft after they recently split off from Activision, including what we think the game is. Enjoy the show!

Starfield wasn’t bad because it feels dated. It suffered for having a bad warp system mechanic and for not having vehicles to explore planets. I’d also say the base building and ship building was boring also but a lot of people liked it.

Some devs complained (allegedly) that Series S specs are restrictive this gen. The divide would be even worse is the next gen Series S is a portable. Switch can be underpowered because the target audience are young children.

I've always thought Microsoft should just rotate consoles and not have a next gen at all. Basically, do what Phones do, and release upgrades. Consoles could do every 3-4 years, and support 1 back and current. For example, release a new xbox, remove the series S from the supported lineup and have the current gen be the x and whatever comes out.

That's a terrible idea, and goes against the entire point of selling a console to begin with: having your own storefront as a hardware manufacturer. Third-parties would not be able to subsidize hardware costs if they didn't have a storefront for themselves. Hence why stuff like the ROG Ally at its cheapest is more expensive than the cheapest Steam Deck model. Without a storefront of their own, third-parties would have to sell consoles at minimum $600-800 to make a profit off of the hardware and the hardware alone.

3rd party accessory manufacturers will shift to making accessories for the Xbox handheld. It's common sense that an Xbox handheld is coming. Handhelds are rising in popularity (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, PlayStation Portal, etc). PlayStation Portal keeps selling out and Sony is realizing people want another dedicated NATIVE handheld gaming device from them. Microsoft will definitely jump into this market.
