I know that in the Cell Arc the characters were retconned to be recluses who don't want people to know the truth, from mere years prior when they had no problem shooting energy blasts in the tournament, but if they were at least willing to be truthful to their actions, they wouldn't need Hercule for the save at the end of the Buu Arc.
