I do wonder what it would have taken for Christopher to become boss. He already had Tony pushing him up the ranks and he was A genuine good earner. The main problems were his drug use and his neverending entitled attitude mixing with an inferiority complex, if he could get those things under control, their could be some good management material there.

I think the major issue here is his relationship with Phil. Phil remembered that Carmine used to say that Sopranos have always been a glorified crew, and this would be a perfect opportunity to take them over (as NY crew in NJ with Vito at the helm or even as one of Phil's crews). Assuming there is no suspicion on Vito (Tony suffers an accident/sudden death/prison), any decision he makes that can be perceived as beneficial to NY over Jersey will be seen as Vito bending over for NY. When Chris asked Tony "why do you always cave for this prick?", Tony explained that they can use it to their advantage. But in Vito's case, it will be immediately held against him. Basically, he's not independent enough to run the Soprano family.

One scenario I could see Vito becoming boss would be if Tony doesn't die but instead his coma was extended a little longer. As Tony was in no position to run things in a vegetated state, Sil gathers the other capos to have a sit-down for them to appoint a successor. This is when Vito steps up or somebody from his crew nominates him, and after much debate and wheeling and dealing on Vito's part. Everybody decides to make him the new boss. Sil remains consigliere, while Christopher and Paulie remain as capos. Sometime after Vito takes the top job, Tony finally comes out of his coma. Once he is updated on what took place in his absence, finding out he's been replaced and shaken by his near death experience, Tony finally decides it is time to leave the life and retires with Vito's blessings. Now a civilian, Tony no longer feels the weight of responsibility on his shoulders or the stress that comes with the mob life of feeling he's in constant danger. He spends his time at home living comfortably, eating and living healthy and having a general positive outlook on life. His relationship with Camilla and the kids improve and outside of visits by Paulie, Christopher and Sil from time to time is no longed involved in any business with his old crew. But knowing Tony, he quickly grows bored of the monotony of living the quiet life and feels the urge to get back into the game. Unfortunately he knows he cannot simply return to his old life without the possibility of being whacked by Vito, so he bids his time. And his opportunity comes when he's told by Paulie or Christopher that Vito is gay. Realizing that the other capos and made men now want Vito dead, Tony hatches a plan to take Vito out, which he manages to do and he then leverages this accomplishment to take back the reigns as boss of the family.

Without watching the vid, I’d say Vito would be at least as good as Tone. He has all Tony’s good qualities as far as boss goes. He’s resourceful, imaginative, ruthless and charming. He was also more cold-hearted and far more even tempered than Tony. The bar isn’t that high. Tony was not a great boss. That said, I think Vito would definitely have at least done as well and probably lasted a few more years.

This is one I could see if Tony died from the gunshot from Junior: At first, it would look good on the surface. Money is made and relations with NY is tight since he's married to Marie. Secretly, Phil would probably act as a second unoffical consigliere on the inside like Tony had with Junior. For example, he told Vito to give the money to Carmela regardless if Tony dies, telling him he can't think that way, since his kid brother Billy gave money back to Phil's family when he was in prison. It's his way of saying "Play by the rules, and don't be a idiot. It'll make you look good." With Finn, I think Vito would probably keep him around since he'd be family to Meadow soon, but would intimidate him regularly when they're alone. So if Finn stays close to Meadow at all times, along with Bobby and Christopher(Since they're both still family to the Sopranos), he'll be fine, unless he leaves sooner. HOWEVER, this isn't gonna stop Vito from his other lifestyle. If anything, Vito would be even more sloppy now that he is the Boss. So he'll probably flee to New Hempshire like in the original. And New Jersey would plurish worse since their reputation takes a hit with a gay man being the Boss. Phil would regularly converse with the Jersey crew instead of Tony telling them he wants Vito on a platter. New Jersey, with the once-again reluctant leadership of Silvio, wouldn't even care a bit for Vito, letting Phil do whatever he wants. Chris and Paulie would volunteer with one for the sheer enjoyment and the other, a stab in the heart AND for getting more money than him. Once Vito comes to NJ, he would be killed in the same by Phil and his cronies. And after this, NY would probably absorb the rest of NJ and the series would probably end with no war taking place, and the lives of Bobby, and Phil being spared from the war, Christopher maintaining his sobriety with him being spared as well along with JT(Although there is a good chance he could relapse, so he'd probably die of an overdose), Carlo not testifying, and Silvio not being restricted to a vegetable. So if you factor all that, it could be considered a slightly positive outcome.

Regarding the two fates that would have to happen to Tony for Vito to become boss; Prison does not necessarily mean that the keys would be handed off as soon as Tony is convicted and sentenced (or awaiting trial). There are real life cases of mob figures either retaining control or even BECOMING boss while in prison (see Rusty Rastelli - Bonano boss). Despite being in prison, mob figures still hold a good bit of power and influence. If needed I'm sure Tony could get a message out onto the streets at a moments notice (CO smuggles him a phone, visititation or speaks in code over the prison phone, etc). Even if Tony was in solitary confinment he would still be ruling the family with little to no issue. As for Junior, I think the main reasons control passed to Tony was: 1, his already old age 2, Tony was family and 3, before he was arrested by the FBI a power struggle was already sort of happening, with Tony and his men systematically whacking people like Mikey P and others loyal to Junior. And keep in mind, Junior was still technically in charge, Tony was just the 'street boss'.

Hard to say cause he's mad greedy, even for that world, but he also is a dealer. So it's possible, if he could keep his greed in check, that he could be popular by always cutting deals where everyone involved wins more than they would with someone like Tony. But it's just as likely that he lets it go to his head and blows it all up. Definitely seems like the type to flip too so I wouldn't wanna work for him. I like these vids though, fam. Keep at it!

And worst of all in areas frequented by mobsters? Absolute disregard for his own safety For all his ability to earn, Vito’s lack of respect among the crew would see him getting killed within a fortnight of taking the job.
