This was my thought when I formulated the question originally based on another theory I saw suggesting that Veil was originally created to be used as a form of execution by an older more brutal version of the Ministry of Magic. There is a difference between, murder, killing, and self-defense. A horcrux is created with MURDER, not “killing.” If Harry “killed” Voldemort in self defense during combat, his soul would not be split.

My thoughts exactly ! Sometimes you can technically kill someone without it automatically qualifying as murder. Especially in Snape's case where it was the humane thing to do. And I would add : you need to murder someone to create a horcrux, but that doesn't mean the act of murder is all it takes. Murder damages the soul, but doesn't automatically result in a horcrux - otherwise Bellatrix and probably other death eaters would have several to their name.

What about the opposite senario: What if Voldemort died when he tried killing Harry as a baby? In this senario, he never got around to making any horcruxes and is gone forever. You could theortically have each book's villian still be the villan, but that kind of puts Harry at a disadvantage when confronting them. Quirl just wants the stone, Lockheart wants Fame and to maybe kill a basilisk, Sirius wants to kill Peter, Barty Crouch jr wants to punish Harry or wants to hunt down reformed death eaters, Lucius wants to become the new Dark Lord in the ensuing Power Vaccum.

I think that, theoretically, if a Dementor started Kissing Harry, it would first get the Horcrux. If it actually stopped then, Harry would be fine. However, I can't imagine the Dementor actually stopping there. It wouldn't just want the small appetizer. It wants the full meal.

I think it was part of the Fidelias Charm - you can't apparate when you're under it's protection. This may be why everyone had to step outside Grimmald place to leave and apparate onto the porch to come in. Also, I think in the books it's stated she didn't have her wand near her.

There was a what if at the end of chamber of secrets that u started to unpack, which is what if mcgonogal didn’t stop Harry and Ron going to the girls bath room, but you forgot one important thing - which is Ron would have made it into the chamber. In the real book Harry rushes forward when he sees Ginny and drops his wand to pick her up. But I think if Ron was there he would b the one to do it and therefore riddle would have picked Ron’s wand up instead. I think, in the same way he kills Cedric in the graveyard, he would attempt to kill Ron as there is no reason for him being there and so the wand would backfire - destroying the part of toms soul in the diary. The only difference to this from the real book is that now - the basalik still exist and Godricks sword does not have venom in it. I’m not sure now that would change the plot tho

Voldemort's ability of flight would make the idea of containing him impractical. I have a feeling that in the scenario where Voldemort stumbles back, he'd only have a few extra seconds to live before somebody (probably McGonagall) hits him with Avada Kedavra.

This bugs me. "Killing" and "murder" are not synonymous. Murder is one specific kind of killing. That's why the term "justifiable homicide" exists. We acknowledge that killing to protect yourself and others in the moment is justified. There's also the crime of manslaughter where we acknowledge the person is responsible for the death due to something like negligence, but there was no intent to kill. Murder is killing with intent and without justification. Edit: Harry killing Voldemort in the middle of a war when Voldemort had been trying to kill him for years and would certainly kill many others if not stopped, wouldn't be murder by legal definition. Voldemort always attacked first.

It might have to do with the emotions involved in the killing, rather than the specific motivation. If the person kills with hate/malice in mind (like most of the Death Eater's kills), it tears the soul. If the person kills with love/protection in mind (like Molly's killing of Bellatrix), their soul would be fine

What if Snape stayed loyal to Voldemort, I.E he realised he was being used by Dumbledore. A really interesting one though…what if The Dursleys raised Harry like a son?? You know about the execution room in the Fantastic Beasts movies? I think that's Voldemort's fate if the backfire doesn't happen. They actually have a room for executions where the room does the killing. So therefore nobody kills Voldemort and the room is the only one that does the killing.

Uhhh, I just finished listening to the audiobook version of the series for the first time in years. Nurmengard wasn't Grindelwald's house. It was a prison he set up for his enemies, his very own Azkaban. When he was defeated by Dumbledore, he was sentenced to stay there. You could consider it his house in that regard, but it was still a prison.

I still think that you're off on the death=soul splitting. I think they're saying that killing someone damages the soul; the innocence of it, and that damage is the integral part of creating a horcrux. Every wizard that's ever killed another isn't automatically split, but if they're dark and delving enough, that's when they get the chance.

I love these what-if videos. They really encourage me think about the story as a whole. For example: what if Snape had been sorted into Gryffindor? Dumbledore suggested that himself in book seven and ever since i found these videos ive been thinking about such what ifs.. What du you people think would change? I'd love to hear some ideas :)

QOTD, while fun to think about seeing the Golden Trio at the height of their power, much like wanting to see Luke in full Jedi mode... it would entirely diminish the accomplishments of the canon story. I can't begin to imagine a scenario where Voldemort survives that doesn't completely undermine his supremely unceremonious death. Let us not entertain thoughts of "Somehow, Voldemort returned."

I'm sorry...both of those sound like INCREDIBLE outcomes that would be so fun to solve, and would really add to the base story. I really want to see an adult AU series of Harry Potter and Gang conquering Infinity Voldemort or a "Voldemort Clone." This is my favorite Carlin Brothers AU scenario to think about yet. So many possibilities for going about it.

The idea of Voldementor is interesting, but consider Harry is the most powerful Patronus caster after Dumbledore, who can easily overpower hundreds of dementors (Lupin and others couldn’t do this, only Harry and Albus), Voldemort wouldn’t stand a chance against Potter.

I like the idea of adult Harry, Ron and Hermione (And Ginny, Luna, Neville, Draco) up against new threats as adults in a darker setting. I wouldn't want to see Voldemort return as a villain though.

I have an idea for a "What if" video, o reven several of them: At various points through the books Harry chooses to not tell something important to an adult, usually Dumbledore. This is perhaps most significant in Order of the Phoenix when he absolutely refuses to tell Dumbledore stuff because Dumbledore is avoiding direct contact. The exception, of course, is Harry's vision of Nagini's attack on Arthur Weasley. But what would have happened if Harry had told someone, especially Dumbledore.things he doesn't? Such things might include hearing the voice of what turns out to be the basilisk,? Or what he saw his his dream when he woke up with his scar hurting at the beginning of Goblet of Fire - before the World Cup? Or what Umbridge was doing to him? Or his vision of Sirius being tortured? Telling someone about any one of these incidents - and there are more - might have caused a huge change in the course of events.

I've always been puzzled by the who "killing splits your soul" thing. Is it killing in general or specifically killing people? Harry didn't split his soul when he killed the Basilisk, Crouch Jr used Avada Cadavra on the spider and didn't get sent to Azkaban. Killing in self defense shouldn't split your soul in my opinion.
