This actually shows something mildly interesting about how equipment works. It seems like the items are programmed to _set_ your attack/defense stat when you equip them, as opposed to continuously applying an attack/defense buff as one might expect. So when you force equipment to be replaced by something that's not meant to change your stats, it simply doesn't change your stats. Now I'm wondering if you keep special effects from equipment like the stained apron if you replace them with non-equipment items, like how you keep the attack or defense from the replaced equipment.

Okay, I largely approve of how the inventory system works in _Undertale._ In old RPGs like _Final Fantasy,_ if you force a random item into a place where it's not supposed to go, it usually reads junk data and gives out outlandish boosts. Not here, though! Toby inadvertently fixed the "item abuse" issues of traditional RPGs.

To be fair, games like Terraria for instance also work this way assuming that if the item you put in the incorrect slot doesn't share a stat with an item that would normally go in that slot. (eg. A Zenith in an accessory slot will have no affect, but a Solar Flare Breastplate in an accessory slot will still give you an additional 34 defense.) I bring this up because I'm pretty sure this took no extra coding to implement; accessory slots will only check for things like additional defense, accessory modifiers directly to your character, etc. Even if you have a weapon modifier on the Zenith, those stats don't effect your character directly, so they are ignored in stat calculation of your character- similarly, if you were to equip a Legendary Hero in your weapon slot, it still would not increase your attack stat despite Legendary Hero's increasing your attack upon consumption. It is not a direct increase to your base stats, nor a weapon modifier. So any attack boost it would normally give is ignored. However, normally games would give random numbers when an item is used in an incorrect slot due to the game still searching for a number to use, even if that number doesn't correlate to the same thing. Let's say for simplicity that any item in an armor slot uses the 3rd number in the items code to calculate defense; if you equip a weapon into that slot, the 3rd number for that item isn't supposed to be defense, but it isn't read that way due to it being in the armor slot. Thus, your defense becomes whatever the 3rd number is, despite it not being intended for defense- but chances are, Undertale was coded in an entirely different way, and the item slots don't act that way to begin with. My guess would be that instead of reading "x" number and using that for stats, Undertale has set functions for each item, and will trash any stat that isnt relevant to the item slot the item is currently in for calculation.

That's actually not how he works. He's programmed to do *at least* 3 damage, but can deal up to 4. Or as low as 1 if you're under 5hp near the end of the fight
