Joanne's brother Jordan has been missing, and she's been searching for him. The possum tries to say Joanne in the final tape during the alley part after he heard her. I have a theory: So we already know that the children that watch the tapes gets put in a trance and fixated on the cartoon, until they are pulled into it and remain trapped as an inanimate object in the tapes. But what if you get trapped in the tapes based on the self awareness you have. Like if Jordan was the opossum, then wouldn't it make more sense if he was rather the objects with eyes? Unless he has a level of self awareness to what the tapes did to the children. The thing you become in the tapes is based on what prior knowledge you have on the Amanda the Adventurer tapes. The ones with the highest self awareness is obviously Amanda and Wooly, with them being able to move around and communicate clearly. Jordan might be in the middle where he can move around but can't communicate at all that's why he struggled to call out Joanne's name. The lowest self awareness would be the objects with eyes, who can only look at the viewer but can't move or speak. I think Jordan had he's suspicions about the tapes but possibly didn't know if it was true or not. Another thing to back up this theory is the way Riley interacted Amanda in the first game, not having prior knowledge to what the true nature of the tapes were, that's why they became a piece of meat in one of the endings.

OH, that actually makes alot of sense... since Rebecca being Amanda and with the most self awareness is simply because...in a way...she IS in fact Amanda. She is the voice of Amanda in the cartoon made by Hameln, she was Amanda during the live action time ( the one she and Sam first made before the cartoon) HECK! She was the reason Amanda exist at all! Like Sam said: "it's all Rebecca"

And there are some theories about the opposum being Jordan, Joanne's missing brother, trapped in the show. So maybe he's self-aware and trying to find a way out. So he helps Riley.
