Yep, especially retail. Worked for a videogame retailer called Gamers for 3 years, and the VP liked to routinely send out emails reminding people "everyone is replaceable." When their chain pulled out of Iowa, the VP paid to run an article in most widely distributed paper to complain and say "there are no good workers in Iowa." When I quit as an assistant manager, I left to make nearly double as an autoparts delivery driver. And about a year after that, like he'd done with other locations, walked into my old store, fired everyone on the spot, closed it up, and hired the most random people. That was nearly 20 years ago and I still have old customers recognize me from time to time wanting to talk about how the place went downhill.

So, how can the employer attract new people if they are already treated unfairly? If it is about older people doing more physical jobs, then fight for less quota or less physical jobs for older people without being scared of getting fired. I hope you get what you are fighting for or at least come up with a solution that is agreeable to both parties. Keep it up!!!

As a Swede, I have a positive view of IKEA. But it saddens me to hear of these unfair working conditions for IKEA employees. Unfortunately, companies often will not improve workers' wages and working conditions on their own. This is why unions are vital in the workplace. As an example 68%!!!! of all workers in Sweden are union members. The result of that is that it is more difficult for companies to decline the demands made by the unions. So keep up the hard fight!

True. That has been my experience in most jobs. "I paid my dues so I can slack off now". Frustrating. Can see this from both sides. The longer people stay in one job = fewer skill sets due to stagnation and lack of exposure to newer technology and different ways of working. You need a healthy ratio of longer-serving vs newer staff. I'm not a fan of 'one job for life' societies. Mix it up. Assign people jobs and train people in various industries (within reason). Why do people need to stay put all their lives? It's not healthy or productive to stay still.
@rainkloudАй бұрын
Doing the bare minimum means that they are meeting expectations i.e. a fair trade of labor for wages. If you want outstanding performance you need to have pay that is commensurate with that. How about investing in things that boost morale and incentivize employees to work more efficiently?
@rainkloudАй бұрын
@@laestrella9727 If people want to "mix it up" then great! But not everyone does. Some people don't live to work, they work to live and for them they "mix it up" with their activities outside of work doing things like volunteering, supporting their friends and family and developing skills not directly related to work. They want to come in, be good teammates, perform their job satisfactorily and then live their lives. Sounds exceedingly reasonable to me. And union employees are not exempt from reviews so if there are employees slacking off then your issue is with ineffective managers who are failing to document, coach and, if need be, terminate those employees. Companies are in the business of selling things and that doesn't just mean their products. They're responsible for providing and selling their growth and development programs to their employees. You want people to work in different jobs? Don't just assign them, sell them on the benefits of it and make it worth their while so they make the move of their own volition.
@laestrella9727Ай бұрын
@rainkloud Can't agree. Have you worked a variety of jobs? There is nuance to this. There are ways to be technically working but due to poor or low effort: you end up costing the company and putting more strain on coworkers. An example: one IT company I worked for. Most colleagues replied to in-house staff with a quick request for more information (PC name, browser.. other technical details). Fair enough. But often, there was enough information about the error to at least send one or two possible resolutions to try from the knowlege base. So instead of avoiding the need for another email or call, we'd have to pick up these replies and send those resolutions. This affects call levels, KPIs / SLAs and staff morale. I do think companies need to get more specific with their contracts for each job role as a lot of people take the p*ss. But I also agree that minimum wage needs to be replaced with 'liveable' wage. F*ck knows why developed countries think it's acceptable to allow companies to pay citizens a wage that 'just' keeps them off the bread line. Really?! That's just embarrassing for everyone involved.

Sonic should be next. "Management" (or mismanagement as I call it) wants to fire EVERYONE who makes over $11 / hr. and hire all new people at a lower wage. Once those new people nickel and dime their way up to $11 / hr., it will be "rinse and repeat" 😩 That should be illegal practices! For sure it's unethical! 😡

Wow, a group of laborers have organized themselves into a union and demand better from their corporate employers. Next you're gonna tell me they voted for representatives that pledge an end to tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate giants, voted for representatives that admonish corporate practices which lead to obscene pay gaps, representatives who vow to strengthen labor protections and safety, and not any representatives that would hire billionaires to a cabinet position, decry overtime payments, or seek to enrich themselves by leveraging personal assets for the needs of their office, right?

A huge issue is financial illiteracy. Employees don’t care about the health of the company and companies don’t care about the health of workers. It’s a partnership.

They're not only screwing their employees, they're screwing their customers too. I was just in an IKEA for the first time in years and I was shocked. The prices are the same as normal furniture stores, but the quality is so much lower. Everything there feels like cardboard. Even their $2 chocolate bars are half the size they used to be. Pure corporate greed. Hopefully everyone will figure it out soon and just stop shopping there.
@markbooth3066Ай бұрын
That's weird, in the UK, Ikea is definitely on the higher end of value curve. You have to pay a lot more to get significantly higher quality flat-pack furniture, but if you go much cheaper the quality drops off much faster. Billy bookcases are a staple of many people's homes, and it's a one-stop shop for everything you might need to make your first home liveable, if not luxurious. It's such a shame that Ikea America is such a shit show in comparison.
@alg003Ай бұрын
A family company is a mom and pop shop. Everything else is a corporation. Almost every corporation doesn't care about you. They care about the bottom line more than anything. Corners will be cut. Quality suffers. While management makes millions, everyone else makes fractions of that.

In Sri Lanka we have our own version of IKEA, and they even export to India. they also make washing machines, though flat-pack furniture and office chairs is their main business. When they deliver, they also send a technician to assemble it for you - unless you would really like to DIY, they would insist sending someone.

Most rich people stay rich by spending like the poor and investing without stopping then most poor people stay poor by spending like the rich yet not investing like the rich but impressing them. People prefer to spend money on liabilities, Rather than investing in assets and be very profitable.

I put it all back and traded again and now I am rounding up close to a million

Here's the thing about unions. You can have a good job without them as long as the business owners are decent people. But if you're forced to unionize because they won't pay you well, you might end up a little richer. But the union heads take a giant cut, so you only make a little more. Honestly you'd be better off finding another job.

Corporate America wants to oppress workers in any way possible. Ignoring seniority is designed to get higher paid workers to quit. That saves money for the company. A company that screws its worker often does the same to customers, vendors, suppliers, etc.

This is what happens with international corporations controlling people's lives. Workers are in America and Canada and the owners and corporate board is in Sweden and other countries. Out of sight out of touch out of mind and throw the workers under the bus and ship the jobs to Asian, African, and South American countries for pennies. So how can the people be earning a decent wage pay the price for the product the owners price gouge for?? They cannot get the money from the country they have the factory at in a low wage no benefit place. The rich are only cutting their own throats in the end. But they don't see. And we all suffer for it.
