What impact will Elite: Dangerous getting space legs have for X4: Foundations

X4 Foundations is nearly perfect, it just needs coop. If ED gets space legs and also becomes a shooter then it's going be hard for X4. Would be nice to see planetary landing in X4 which ED has.

There are handheld weapons of a sort in X4, there is the bomb launcher and the hand laser. Both are generally used in a spacesuit in space, the hand laser doesn't do anything you can't do with careful application of your ship weapon, assume your ship has forward-firing guns.

OK, answer me this: where is your ship while you are going round looking for another pilots' ship to take? I walk into it. You cry. What about your ships on stations? And what about me selling the engineered stuff, loading up more of your engineered stuff and selling THAT? If I blow that ship up, who pays the insurance and gets the ship? What if I decide to not get your ship back and go for the freewinder? Does that become yours?

I'm assuming you are talking about boarding ships. I don't think we would get the ability to steal ships, just to steal cargo, murder passengers and damage systems. This probably won't be implemented because of the reasons you've listed above.

@@24thcenturygamer Well that is no better, just gives you a way to finagle (cheat) the system so that you get the laffs. As long as you dress up in pirate and only destroy, you get the S&Gs of destroying OTHER PEOPLE'S effort and no loss of your own. Why would ANYONE go into open as anything other than a cargo-free pirate? The game as imagined by Braben didn't NEED a crime and punishment system because as he saw it, as he played it, player vs player would be so insignificant that it would be a waste of effort to do anything about it. There would be no player vs player invasion of ship as he imagined the game when he said we would have ship boarding, it would be all PvE shipboarding: you'd invade an NPC ship or be boarded by NPC pirates. This is almost definitely the way this game will go with ground attacks: you'll have a mission to invade an NPC base, or board an NPC ship, created specifically for that mission, and outside that mission, you don't get to invade. Your way and nobody WANTS to go into Open.

@@markhackett2302 Some people currently play open, even with the chance of being ganked. Even if boarding of player ships is implemented, I doubt the people who play open because they enjoy the risk will change.

You are aware that you're comparing apples with pumpkins right? Nobody is switching to anything. In ED you always stay poor and weak but technically it's done well. X4 is galactic tycoon/godemperor sim but technically it's done meh.
