It's really kind of straightforward: the fairy circle is Magick and the end result of someone else's story. When the Doctor and Ruby break it, the evil spirit of Mad Jack is released and he's reborn in the world as Roger ap Gwilliam to grow up into the dangerous politician 30 years later. The Doctor is also taken by the magickal curse in exchange for releasing Mad Jack -so he's dead. Ruby comes under a curse and the rules of this kind of Old Magick is she has to atone for it, which she does by stopping Roger ap Gwilliam, but that doesn't necessarily end her curse. That only comes at the end of her life when she goes backwards in time to warn her younger self not to step on the fairy circle and save both herself and the Doctor, thus erasing her own tragic timeline. What did Old Ruby says that terrifies them so much and recoil from younger Ruby? My reading is she doesn't say anything to them. When they come close to her, they react to her as something that's wrong and shouldn't exist, she emits a kind of feel that even Kate Stewart hears on her earpiece. Under the curse, Ruby has become a cryptid, an Eldritch Horror.

But the numbers here don't add up. Ruby in the present was able to pay with her phone and she went back home her mom acted like its been maybe a little while since she last saw Ruby. So we know its roughly 2024. But the doctor says (and the timeskips) that ap Gwilliam becomes PM in 2026. So he would havet o be send back in time and be born there. That might be still the case but calling this episode straight forward is generous :D

I personally think that the entire story has absolutely nothing to do with Mad Jack or the real Roger ap Gwilliam. As I interpret it the only thing that happened was that the doctor disappeared (likely thanks to fairies) and that Ruby wanted to make sense of it. So with her yet unknowns power she constructed her own timeline around her lifelong abandonment issues (which manifest through the woman that she can never fully see or reach but that will lead to others leaving her) that simply had elements of the last things she heard and read in it. At the end of her life she finally realizes what happened and prevents her younger self from going this path.

When the doctor in the beginning broke the fairy circle it started an alternative timeliness It showed a timeliness where Ruby live a life of the her older self without the doctor . She wanted to tell her younger self subconsciously to stop the doctor from breaking the circle which she did at the end of this episode. This episode reminded me of the Donna Noble episode when she had to turn a different way while driving the car. The reason why the Dr was there was when Ncuti was shooting his other series called Sex Education and he could be in two places at the same time

You actually called it at the very start of the video - the Doctor broke a fairy circle so got stolen to the Otherworld by the faeries...which in turn released Mad Jack. Myths and legends are real this season remember. Poor Ruby "even your real mother didn't want you" that hit hard :( Great episode, Millie was fantastic!

As someone who struggles with profound fear of abandonment, this episode is so incredibly hard to watch. The woman in the distance is the manifestation of Ruby's fear. She showed up when the Doctor vanished on her, when people attempt to help her with it they end up abandoning her (running away as they feel that very FEAR). Even when she tries to live despite it, she can't maintain relationships because of that fear. She pushes people away before they can hurt her. Ruby was abandoned at birth on the steps of the Church on Ruby Road. For her whole life she has had to deal with the fear that she will be abandoned again, but when the Doctor left, it flared up inside of her. Only at the end, when Ruby can acknowledge it in front of the Doctor, someone who would never abandon her, does she actually vanish. The fear's manifestation vanishes and the Doctor stays, but even despite it the fear is still there. It's always a part of her. The best she can do is not let the fear control her, as she did in this timeline.
