This is literally the first time I've ever heard someone say that this book was a fanfiction. It's well known that the author reads fanfiction and has implemented a LOT of common fanfic tropes into the book, purposefully.... But I don't think it was ever fanfiction before it was published... This is an incredibly cheesy, corny, silly romantic comedy but I absolutely LOVE IT. Straight people have had a million of these but this is the first one I’ve ever seen despite watching A LOT of queer films. All of them are either super artsy, super traumatic, sad, or focused around being a coming-of-age story. Which you know, those are cool. But I’ve wanted a silly, goofy, corny gay romantic comedy and I finally got it! Granted there have been a few that I’ve seen in the genre but none that have this hallmark special feeling (and I way this with all the affection).

Interesting that you mention that the emails could have included negative stuff about their family members because in the book Henry does kind of trash talk his sister a little bit... And the monarchy a little bit as well... So like Henry probably did get in significantly hotter water then Alex did when the emails leaked. Also it's important to note that the book makes it VERY clear that Alex's email was the account that was hacked into and not Henry's... It's something that you can assume in the movie but it is explicitly stated in the book... So yeah, there was some potential tension with Henry and his family after the emails leaked because of the conversations that he had with Alex.
@heyitsmira17 Жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I read the book, but wasn't there smth about his sister and substance abuse? Or stuff like that? So when the emails were leaked she also had to deal with a lot of her own personal struggles being exposed to the public or smth similar
@AnxietyRat Жыл бұрын
@@heyitsmira17 yup. From what I can remember, his relationship with her wasn't actually damaged all that much so they were still friendly by the end of the book but yeah that information did leak to the public because they officially said she was on like a "wellness retreat spa" or something and very much not rehab and then Henry's emails leaked and confirmed that she was in fact in rehab during that time due to substance use, cocaine specifically.

to me, the castle argument is the most important scene of the movie because it is such a reality check for both of them. up until that point, Alex was being delusional about what really means to be with someone who not only is still in the closet, but had to suppress himself his whole life for being born into a system where duty is above anything else. at the same time, Henry needed to see that simply running away and hiding like he always did after everything him and alex lived together was no longer an option, because as much as he said that he couldn't afford for Alex to fall in love with him, he also had let him in, so he was also to blame for that. that's why he couldn't tell Alex to leave.

There are actually two moments earlier than the talking-in-bed scene where we get a glimpse of Alex's caring personality. There is the hospital scene where we see him dressed as a strawberry enjoying telling a story to the kids, then he steps into the doorway and sees Henry and the sick little girl having an animated conversation - we can see from the expression on Alex's face that that is important and his heart is thawing and melting at that moment. But there is the earlier scene which I think most people miss. On the plane back for damage control, Amy is quizzing Alex, and the conversation goes to where Amy says her dog is her son. And Alex clearly agrees to see photos of the dog as a way of sharing what Amy cares about. (Most people would be bored by seeing photos of someone else's "child" but Alex knows it is important to Amy and Amy is important to him. PS - I love Amy.)

It is beyond refreshing to see someone experiencing this movie and not keeping their head in the gutter throughout the whole episode. If I would have done a reaction video to this movie the first time I watched it I would have embarrassed myself with the amount of tears I shed. While you find many of the scenes to be targeted fanfiction, there are characteristics of nearly every scene that I found myself able to relate to; both on the highs and lows. I found the story line had me like Henry did Alex, there was a rope connected to my chest and it just kept pulling me deeper into the emotional cascade they were experiencing.

I'm so glad you reacted to this! I read the book last year and loved it, and it was one of the only books that I got completely absorbed by since my early Percy Jackson days (and it was very fun to have both of those adaptations coming up). When you finish the book, I recommend looking up the Henry POV epilogue-ish chapter that was included in the collector's edition. Did you see the little post-credits clip? I was super excited about the movie, and I loved it, but there were some very noticeable changes from the book, specifically the lack of multiple characters and plotlines (Alex's sister and stepfather, Henry's mother, the politics, etc), several iconic moments that were only barely touched on (I recommend the Cornettos deleted scene released a few days ago), and some of the dialogue. They did a fantastic job showing the development of Alex and Henry's relationship through the editing of the email/text montages and phone calls, and I wish we had been able to see more of that because there's so much more to their conversations and other secrets shared than just the relationship. My absolute favorite change for the movie is Alex's involvement in Texas because it was so directly his involvement that helped Ellen win instead of just being part of the team and getting benched after telling her about his relationship, and I was way too worried about the outcome of a fictional election that I already knew the outcome of going into the movie, so clearly the storytelling choices worked for me!

Thank you for making this video. It was fun watching you truly get excited at key moments. I haven't watched Heart Stopper at all, so I can't speak to that, but I've been in mourning for our Ineffable Husbands since the final minutes of "Good Omens" season 2. "Red, White, and Royal Blue" has been healing my soul. I have not heard anything about this originating as fan fiction. I think that's just something some people say when they want to dump on something for being feel good. Here's the thing, I've read a ton of fan fiction. Heck, I'm reading post-season-2 "Good Omens" fan fiction of late, and the thing is, being called fan fiction is not the insult some think it is. There are a lot of fan fic writers who are better writers than some authors who have traditionally published best-selling books. Talent exists in all sorts of places. I have watched an incredible number of RomComs in my life, and this is already one of my favorites. And that Paris love/sex scene was the most beautiful intimate scenes I've ever watched in a movie or TV show. I'm actually glad they dispensed with the enemies to lovers part quickly and got down to building the bond. The enemies to lovers trope only works for me when the riff is something small or a misunderstanding that can be easily rectified and move on. So, this movie did it the way I like, instead of having many years of a long abusive thing, like having someone fall in love with their bully who tormented them all through school. I know bully romances are a thing, but they're not my thing... I don't remember any of my school bullies with any fondness, and I don't like to watch toxic relationships. By contrast, despite having lots of sex and the occasional lude joke, Alex and Henry together are just really sweet and wholesome. Watching this movie is like being wrapped in a warm, comforting blanket. I didn't know this movie or the book existed until a month ago when I saw the trailer listed as a KZbin suggestion, with a thumbnail picture of two guys in formal ware covered in cake. And honestly, I now just want to see Crowley and Aziraphale rolling around covered in cake too. I was so excited about this movie that I got the book too. While I haven't had time to read it in earnest because I've got work deadlines, I've occasionally opened to a random page and just read that page. There are a lot more emails in the book and some made me cry, especially when they show Henry's fragility. Anyway, great video. I just subscribed, and I looked at what other videos you've done. I'll be watching your "Fright Night" with David Tennant video tomorrow... because I always need more David Tennant.

you saying the entirety of good omens 2 is one of the most fanfiction thing you have ever seen is honestly so true 😭😭 ( Taylor Swift definitely wrote Timeless about them, as well as fitzsimmons)

7:58 i mean alex used to fancy him since he was a kid and had this idea of him that completely shattered when he met henry and he acted like a prick (not rly but yk) he expected to find comfort on him due to the similarities between them and the life they were supposed to form.

yes, finally Jess! I've been fangirling this film for days and aching for your thoughts and reaction. their story is so tender and sweet and open a lot of hope (i know it's a bit fanfiction-issh but let me be delulu 😂). p/s: we definitely believe and wait to see your own apartment decorated in your own taste.

let us queer people have the cute overly fluffy romcom tropes that for so long have only been for straight couples !!!

ooh excited for this! uploaded at the perfect time for me to watch while i do my chores 🤭 rwrb is one of my very recent favourite books. only read the book for the first time in july in preparation for the movie and fell in love. personally, i prefer the book as they had to cut so many great things out and it was a little bit disappointing but it's still a wonderful adaptation made w so much love and care from everyone involved.

Loved your reaction, as always and since this is 10 months later my following comment is not only trivial, it is also rather out of date. But anyway, you mentioned the $75,000 cake. Actually that was 75,000 British pounds which would be. as of this date (7/11/24), $96,863.63. Just to be exact and pedantic.

This ia sort of random but have you ever seen the movie "Pride" from 2014? It's a true story of a small LGBTQ+ group supporting the miners strike here in the UK in 1984 (if you've seen Billy Elliot it's the same strike depicted in that). It has an amazing cast and is one of my favourite movies of all time. It's funny and emotional and heart warming. A small moment in this movie reminded me of a moment in that movie and I've shown Pride to anyone I possibly can so I thought I would recommend it. I think you'd really love it if you haven't seen it.

The book is gorgeous, this is fun! I think it’s best to think of the movie as inspired by the book rather than a direct adaptation. I’ve had so much fun watching this movie! The book makes me sob though lol

exactly !!! why be in a claustrophobic party when you could be having a lovely walk outside, snow falling down, fireworks popping in the distant background... such a different vibe!!

@@fictionaldarling also i don't care how american the party was, don't tell me literally no one would be talking to a prince of England lol. he would be swarmed by people.

12:35 It does work like that. Yep. I talked to one of my straight friends many years ago about kissing, and he said that it should be very gentle or girls wouldn't like it. Maybe it's true, maybe not. But a lot of gays prefer to use all the force they can master.
