Let's face it, most native English speakers would be tripping over their tongues trying to get some of those lines out at that speed. I think that's what impressed me most about this song: retaining clarity of diction within a very complex rhythmic and melodic framework.

It's one thing to do that in a studio setting as well but Imagine having to be consistent on tour. That's pretty freaking ballsy if you ask me! ps. I doubt there won't be many KZbin cover artists doing any of these songs either. EDIT: I just read somewhere that Tuomas said that Shoemaker is one of the songs that won't be performed live, which makes sense. I can't even imagine half the songs being done live, considering they are incredibly challenging.

The album appears to explore more of Floor's upper range. It also showcases Troy and Marco as well as harmonies with the three singers. It creates an interesting change for the band's overall sound. The effect is less metal and more melodic. But there are plenty of tribal rhythms as well.

Oh lovely Elvann. It's a real choir. This is a slow building opener of the album. It's like they are welcoming us to the musical journey with them. This is very difficult to sing so Floor had to really rehearse this for sure. This is great but just a beginning. You'll see.

@@lekalla Kai is indeed a great drummer, but just like DT, Tuomas is a perfectionist and that can take you places )))) Check out "Genesis", from Empath album and you'll get the idea where someone might end up in search of perfect. Tuomas, in his Q&A, said that Music was originally conceived to be similarly all-encompassingly ambitious, he just could not quite make it work. You are right about the posters, so the three drummers were used only to record the album. Besides, DT is a solo artist at the moment, so I imagine he's the only one on the posters )))

Nightwish has been working with Angel Studios in London for several albums. That's a legit choir. gotta give it up to Pip and his people. Always deliver at a high level. Floor's dedication to her craft is evident in every performance and recording. i don't believe she's capable of half-assing or phoning it in. she wouldn't allow herself to do it. a beautiful song about Music.

The new patterns are very interesting. Seems like Nightwish (finally) fully embraced their progressive rock/metal side, (further) shedding their power metal roots, without losing their Hans Zimmer. The fascinating, to me, spin is that those rhythmic signature progressive metal elements that a band like Dream Theater does with drums or guitars forward, Nightwish does with vocals.
@AdolfoSalinasP

Nightwish Is using More voices than ever and the reason Is simple: Now the band has 3 vocalists. Yes, Floor Jansen is the most important singer, but you have two different and good voices to get richer the music.

Did you noticed in the video the 4500 year old harp/lyre? It is believed to be one of the first instruments that a human has created to make music. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyres_of_Ur I love the comblexity of the melody in this song and how precisely Floor sings it. Just beautiful.
@nimedhel09
@nimedhel09 4 жыл бұрын
Yep! They're totally the lyres of Ur! The first stringed instruments that we know of. I'm sure there are other lyres like that that are way older but that we haven't found or have been destroyed, because these date back to the Early Dynastic Period, but ancient cities like Uruk and Eridu (who are considered the oldest cities in Mesopotamia, dating back at least 6000 years) must have had instruments for longer than 4500 years, right? Sumerian civilisation dates back to those times, and scholars think that writing developed around 5500 years ago, so music instruments have to have been older than that. I know at least that the oldest instruments period found were flutes dating back 7000 years or more (not only in Mesopotamia but all around the world, if I'm not mistaken). I'm sorry for the long comment. My inner nerd had to come out on this :p
@mantailuaa
@mantailuaa 4 жыл бұрын
nimedhel09 Your comment is valid, it is very interesting to read about this kind of history, for me that is. I’m pretty sure that humans created instruments allready back in the days we lived in gaves. If you think about it human voice is the very first intrument. I totally see a mother huming to her child in ancient times. Also it was clever to include in the vids image of the clay pot they found in Ur too, and there was the worlds first known composition written in cuneiform. The music piece can be found in yt, played with reconstracted lyre.

Later on men discover more complexity and more different ways to express themselves Tuomas seems to trying us to tell. This is not about showing your abilities but storytelling. That’s what this whole album is about. Our complete story about how human and nature communicates via music in multiple ways. Beautiful made.

Always a pleasure to watch your reactions !! As an artist yourself, and covering many Nightwish songs, you perfectly understand how difficult this song is. I'm not a singer, but one of the (multiple) things I love with her, is the precision she puts in every single word she sings, and besides manages to blow so much emotion in it. It's really amazing... As you say, many people may not even notice how hard the lines she sings are hard to perform. And her years of experience and hard work allow her to make us dive into the emotion of every single song she sings, she's really a perfectionnist, and it's always a stunning experience to listen to her ! Very impatient to see you react to the rest of the album, be prepared ;-)

@@-ephemeral-7255 exactly the same way a coach can give criticism to a player, a mentor to a protege you don't have to be a perfect example of something to be able to critique someone else's performance in something all you need is the knowledge of what you are talking about and a good ear (in this case). The other thing is that performers rely on constructive criticism to drive them to perform better and to kee p improving. If you believed youtube reactors Floor is untouchable as a singer and everyone should just bow down and be grateful she sings for us! How does that offer any benefit to Floor other than an ego boost? If I was Floor I know who I would rather watch a reaction from. I am not Floor and cant sing but still find peoples opinions interesting particularly if there is knowledge to back it up.

It is great to acknowledge influences of great composers like Tuomas Holopainen! One of the major influence of Tuomas Holopainen is VANGELIS, Oscar-winning for the film Chariots of Fire. The intro of ‘Music’ is partly inspired by him! The thematology of the album as well since Vangelis wrote the music for the NASA mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey and an asteroid was named after him.

Have you watched Tuomas` answering questions on Nightwish channel? He said about this song that he wanted to devide it into 4 parts: metal, electronic, jazz and pop. Like combining different types of music, showing, what music can be. And when he did that, it was "the goofiest thing he ever heard", so he made it another way. And you said "influences", it might be his idea and he did it on purpose.

Hello Elvann! I like your analysis is the one I most wanted to see. THX. It started with 2001, a Space Odyssey (music and video got married well) and then came a drumming with video from Avatar. Here are two big surprises, Floor's new vocal (7'14 "reminded me of Best Zengers) and heavier guitars than other albums. At 12'34" there is something of IBM / Industrial. I realized after listening about 5 times. At 14 minutes, a climate similar to Ataraxia.

I think this is the most daring and challenging album. Heading into new directions is always a huge gamble whether it is voluntarily or not, but with musicians as these you cannot leave the opportunity. It's also to keep the band's mind on track. Challenging them to go beyond their current abilities. They have to reinvent themselves to keep each other entertained especially on a level as this. Of course Tuomas can write the same style of songs over and over, but does it still make him happy writing in the same style? One fan will be disappointed because of this, and another one will be happy. That's how it goes. And I............ I am happy :)

Thank you for your reviews are very educational.

There are two bands in the world today that have no boundaries on their influences. Nightwish, and Band-Maid. Both borrow freely from classical, jazz, funk, rock, metal.. you name it.

I saw interviews where Tuomas confirmed that the first disc has string ensemble and choirs only, no full orchestra, that's only used on the second disc.

I just throw it in, don't laugh, but I hear influences of ABBA in this song, especially in the chorus parts. I know it sounds weird but listen to some ABBA songs and you will here the same vibe and feeling. I like this a lot. The whole album is really so good. I can't stop laughing at the guys already complaining about "this is not Nightwish" it's not enough metal bla bla bla. It is Nightwish. They always had also folk songs like the last of the wild or even a lot earlier. Sleeping sun to be honest is far away from Metal but still the hardcore wannabe fans don't get that. Using all three singers for the very first time on the same album having their own song is also so nice. Harvest with Troy and Endlessness with Marco. Both songs are so good and just shows what a quality musicians and singers they are. When you progress to Shoemaker or Procession you will see a lot more what is there, especially lyrical wise. Procession hits you in the feels

Andreas Messerli Tuomas did ”borrow” from very different sourses with his own way. In some songs I hear dead metal, in some slavish, russian influences and so on. I really like those different influences! So if you hear Abba here... It is possible, there was some pop definitely in this song! I did not hear Abba in this, but I am Not Abba ”Expert”. You have to listen something a lot, to find those Little nyances!

OF COURSE!!! you nailed it dude! of course is like abba, I was hard thinking all along where I've listen stuff like this song. Still I think there is something out there more close than ABBA is, my first thought was that Nightwish reduce metal, into CASSICAL off drumms/off bass/mostly off guitar ROCK, but couldn't find any example of it. To me the chorus feels old but renew, as if thomas wanted to rebuild classic rock and give it the oportunity to being singed by newer influences.

Modal melodies, difficult diction, range leaps at counterintuitive intervals, WOW. I think you were trying to say the unconventional directions keep it exciting and unpredictable.

In the beginning of "Music" you may hear something that may sound like an organ. I know Toumas Holopainen is a fan of Hans Zimmer and I came to think of the movie "Interstellar". It is in the scene where they must connect with the mother ship. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2TPlHqkgs2pqaM PS: I'm a little bit disappointed you don't went into fangirl-mode for having a harps in video.

What I hear with the quick notes is maybe an oriental influence? Like it sounds a bit like the demi-tones (I don't know if it's the correct term, so tell me if I'm wrong) in arabic music, mostly. Quick notes like that are also kind of used in a lot of world music, aren't they? What I also really love about this album is the visuals in the lyrics videos. Like here you have the lyre of Ur, in Shoemaker, the Moon and asteroids or comets (Shoemaker-Levy comet?), Tribal with the skeleton dance and Endlessness with the cosmic imagery, for example.

It’s the way Floor delivers the songs and what she makes me feel listening to Nightwish songs. And that doesn’t happen to me so much with Tarja, even though she is a hell of a singer.

They will definitely start the concerts with this song.Imagine them opening with Kai drumming that beginning part, and then Floor singing those lyrics, which are quite introductional for the song itself, like "Want a tale in major scale?" or "It is coming your way, the very first song". Yeah, it's the first song of the album, and yeah, it's in major scale...damn, Tuomas

As old fan of the Nightwish, when i listened to this album and particular this song first time, I... didn't like it to much.... something like "well.... ok.... not bad, but could be better...".... BUT!!! while istening to this album one and once again, i've noticed that every time i listen to it, I become addicted to it more and more, find an discover for myself interesting ad unusual parts... And now, I catch myself on thoughts like "I wonder, will Tuomas be able to overcome himself, or this album still the best forever"... It's pretty strange...

Maybe, the real genius of Tuomas and Nightwish is not to stay at the same place using old style over and over again, but to give us new feelings every new album.

Original idea Tuomas had for Music was to go over the history of music incorporating as many musical styles as possible. He said when he made the demo of that it was horrible, and he mentioned that this song was his biggest challenge on the album. In this Q&A kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2fJdYiBZt2Aabs

I think the first listen to this song is quite challenging for most Nightwish fans but I have to admit that it sounds really cool now I have listened to it quite a few times these last couple of days. I wonder if the vocal patterns may be traditional from the past as were the instruments? Tribal drums, the first know harp from 2800bc or so the bone whistle etc. That would be a very Tuomas thing.
