I know that you don’t want to hear that you need a cerclage, but it is very important for the health of your baby. Inside your uterus is your baby, and we all want your baby to be born around 40 weeks.
This means that if a baby is born at 38 weeks, he or she will be safe; but we say 40 weeks because that is the optimal number.
If your baby is born before viability due to an incompetent cervix and silent dilatation then your doctor will talk to you about your need for a cerclage in future pregnancies.
An incompetent cervix is different than a short cervix. A short cervix may be just that, short. Whereas an incompetent cervix is one that is short, continues to get shorter, and also opens (dilates).
This is bad because your baby will be delivered prematurely, and no one wants this. So, if this is your first pregnancy, then your healthcare provider will monitor you closely to see if your cervix changes.
If your cervix continues to shorten and dilate, then he or she will talk to you about the need to place a cerclage. If you had a previous pregnancy where baby delivered prematurely because your healthcare provider did not know that you had an incompetent cervix, then you will need a cerclage for this pregnancy.
Placing a cerclage is a surgical procedure. This means that you will go to the hospital, be administered spinal or epidural anesthesia, and your physician will place a stitch to prevent the cervix from opening.
