I love how you let your animals "work" the farm. Many don't see the benefits of animals other than a food source. Good stuff!

How great is your little gadget to move the tractors. Please show us how to build one of those. Most folks don't have a welding set up... It is great when ideas can be improved by others in different situations. Swedish Smarts help everyone. We use white plastic roofing instead of metal to reflect the heat in the south USA. Love your videos!

It's great to see that the simple close to the land approach to your homestead. Here in America we have a tendency to waste and rush for a deadline as opposed to quality and sustainably. Love the camera work and showing the land. Looks a lot like the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where my Great Grandparents settled as they were of Sweden. Keep up the good work.

Needs in order to have this: tractor, flatland. We don't yet have a tractor and have hilly, uneven ground, so are going with a different design. Ours will be a 6x8 hoop house with chicken wire for night-time and an electric fence around for day.

I'm not a farmer but I really enjoy your videos. It's like a Farm University but hands on rather than theory. Maybe you'd consider some sort of environment where visitors can stay and learn. If people pay to sleep in icebergs I'm sure some would be very happy participating in your ever changing and growing life style. I live in a big City but born and raised in the country. I miss the peaceful life although it can be stressful by times. The rewards far exceed the stress.

Hi Simeon, any idea how the stock density for these tractors compares to EU 'free range' type density? I.e can they still be marketed as 'free range' or not? I assume the physical space per bird is along the same lines as inside reared birds.
@simeonandalex7 жыл бұрын
The physical space per bird is more than inside. In Sweden you would be allowed to have 97 chickens on this area. We max them out with 70-75 chickens. Again, these birds cover 10m2 each day. Broiler would cover 350m2 in the 5 weeks they are out on pasture. That is important to consider here. To be honest I have no interest in calling the product free range since I don't believe in 'free range'. I have seen organic farms that meet the free range standard but it is still not ideal. In nature birds move: Away from the manure and on to fresh grounds. In traditional free range systems the birds run over a specific piece of land the whole time...

I understand that Sweden has very strict rules on the space for each animal. Do these apply to your chicken tractors? I also notice that there is no chicken wire on the top of the tractor. Have you clipped the wings of the chickens? We have a lot of hawks, some eagles and some owls in our area and I would have to have a way to keep the predators out of the tractor or my outside chicken runs. Watching you move the tractors gave me all kinds of ideas about how to build the wheel assemblies. I have a full metal working area in my shop and love to build things like that. I also enjoyed how you did the filming and then did a voice over while you work. Great idea.

They have chickens free range with a mobile chicken house build on a trailer chassis. You could move the chickens from field to field if you wanted to go that way.

Hey mate, those tractors are looking great! Where did you find the blueprints for this model? I am looking to build some myself and have found all kinds of models, but not these Joel Salatin style ones... Tack på förhand!
@aleblanc35477 жыл бұрын
Glad to see this continued. i was wondering how you get the chickens from the greenhouse to the tractors; hopefully we'll get the see that (I bet it's tougher than moving the pigs, eh)? :>) I find it Interesting that the term "free range" has a nice connotation to it, but that it's not all that good.
@simeonandalex7 жыл бұрын
These chicken tractors are not for the layers. I use them to raise the roosters and sometimes pullets. The layers are going to be in a mobile hen house with a poultry netting around them.

@arlingtonguy547 жыл бұрын
I use Salatin tractors too and have a dolly. The problem with the dolly is that it lifts the end up enough so that young chicks less than 4 weeks old can get out when you move it. Also the wheels of the dolly sometimes rolls on the feet of the chickens so you have to stop and back up or occasionally kill a small bird. Your sled might be a better method. The use of 1/2 inch hardware cloth is better than the 1inch poultry wire too which only lasts about two seasons. My sheep also break through the wire to get to the feed. I have steel roof panels instead of lighter aluminum that Salatin recommends but the wind will sometimes lift them off and sail them across the pasture like a giant ninja star. Very dangerous.
@lindapolle16657 жыл бұрын
arlingtonguy54 Consider some kind of a foam or a brush edge on the internal side of the edge which drags on the ground. Remember the "cow catchers " on the front of steam trains? These scooped under the cow to push it off the tracks. This is a bit far afield, but one time I was at an areo-space plant where they made door seals for space craft. What they looked like was something like a strip of fiberglass fur. Humm...carpet might provide the flexible gap filling edge you need. Reveled carpet might work too.

In the US 'free range' means access outdoors on a live growth plot (the range part). In a building is 'cage free' on prepared feeds. Then we have vegetarian fed (no animal ,icl. fish) fed. Natural fed without antibiotics unless actual illness present (no prophylaxis) Organic, diet of organic feeds, mostly animal free (bugs ok) and no antibiotics at all. Then there is conventional, factory farms, small cages fed constructed diets and prophylaxis nutrients and antibiotics. Some stores have all of these available. Price range from the 'best' to 'factory' is an order of magnitude difference.
@simeonandalex7 жыл бұрын
My meat birds are not free range. I don't care about organic certification either. Try to work with what is best for the birds and farm. I am pro animal protein in chicken feed as well. They are omnivores and need that.

I don't think the Salatin CT are well designed. 1. Far to expensive in material; (except if you have the stuff on the farm anyway) 2. to big to get them working on a "not so flat" field; 3. It is to cramped inside. There are to much hassle to me to work with. And I got angry with myself, because I build something which, I knew wouldn't work for me, but I wanted them, because they are Salatin designs. I like to be able to stand in my tractors, so I build them like John Suscovich. Remember that you can't just take their (US) measurements, and make them work in Europe, because them space calculations are illegal here in Europe. If you want to sell something you better read up one the laws :-). I hope I can get an old trailer and some electric fence netting (?) (Geflügelnetze in German) and I will build the better system (Gabe Brown/ also Salatin) which I know works! But you might need a little bit more land.
