As an ex-Scientologist, this series and all the content you’ve done on cults is super relatable. I identified with your experience as depicted in The Vow. It couldn’t have been more similar in the general experience of indoctrination and manipulation. The specifics of NXIVM are similar to Scientology but that’s beside the point, really, it’s the way in which well meaning people can give over our selves and trust someone when our spidey senses should be shouting “RUN!” that’s so important to convey. That transcends the differences between religious or political factions.

Just finished The Vow with my wife and I was shocked that there is this idea that the term cult is treated so dismissively. I think I heard multiple times things like “What is a cult?” As if to dismiss it as non existing simply because someone can’t give a Webster’s definition of it. The fact that an answer is not present does not mean that the thing itself is also not present. Cult is a highly charged word but the term is often associated with groups who have been manipulated psychologically often times by some charismatic leader. Manipulation has to be involved in order for a thing to be considered a cult. The sad part is it’s hard for people to “tangibly” present evidence of manipulation in the mind until it’s presented itself publicly. This is why it’s so dangerous because you can deny deny deny without the presence of “physical” evidence. The whole time these guys play the saint and say things like “who have I killed? “Who have I ever hit?” “Who have I forced to do anything?” All physical actions..while ignoring the complete human experience. They have all the answers to every little question but in those moments they fail to acknowledge the simplest of truths..that we are not just physical beings. We have a mind, we have a conscious (despite some people’s actions saying otherwise).
