: Regarding the very meaning, where _is_ the "twin" in a "digital twin"?! So a term had to be coined. Hmm, well. Of course it is not IBMs invention and the explanation of what the term is _supposed_ to mean are right. Some real time data plus calculations and processing on it. Why not throw in some more of those "modern" terms in like "Observability", "IoT", "BigData", "AI"?! However, where appears the (instance of a) _"twin"_ in the digital realm of the component or system or whatever that is observed for the purpose of acquiring that real time data to provide it to processing? And what else would a simulation model be, that is just fed with real time data?! In this case the _model_ at least forms something that can be perceived as a "twin"? I feel like the term "digital twin" itself might be a bit weak and misleading when the core just is to gather data, perhaps relate that data and process it to draw conclusions or to establish some part or kind of feedback control. Only because the capabilities to do that have enhanced over the last couple of years, no new (marketing?!) term needed to be introduced. Or where is the large technical step that sets revolutionary ahead by so far what could be conceived as just evolutionary progress? When the foremost purpose is to achieve "predictive maintenance", then the focus is on appropriate data processing with the special outcome of extrapolations, but not on creating a "twin" in terms of an equal model.
