Viewers often express interest in my Dutch Army Hooped Bivi when they see it on my wild camping videos, so I thought I'd put a quick video together to give them a bit of a closer look and explain some of the features.
Many thanks for watching!

That must be one of the more comprehensive overviews of the DAHB on YT, particularly with the tarp advice: One day perhaps, it's on the wish list.😉 Thanks for putting the time in.

I find a military poncho combined with either trekking poles or sticks are perfect for providing an 'admin space' at the head end without adding weight to your pack.

Hello Des. An good made Clip 👍 The name of the producer is FECSA / Fábrica Española de Confecciones S.A. (FECSA) The company is based in Spain and produces this bivy bag and various military sleeping bags under license. The main difference lies in the use of other materials, which is then reflected in the price. The zippers of the FECSA bivy are sensitive and need to be treated with care! Occasional rubbing with a stub of candle makes it run easier and prevents " hooking " . Wish you a good Season 2023 and with all the best from Germania Jürgen
@DesGreene
@DesGreene Жыл бұрын
Many thanks Jürgen! Somebody else mentioned that the quality of materials on the Spanish ones is not quite as good. I've certainly never had any issues with the fabric or zips, but I do try and use the zips carefully anyway, and always avoid putting them under side strain. All the best to you!👍👍

The material if it's the official one is Goretex while the unofficial one is something that mimics goretex - but is equally as good. Despite the weight and bulkiness, it's a fantastic piece of kit. So spacious and great for trapping warmth too. I can't wait to use it in winter. Hope you are well mate!
@DesGreene

Hi Monty! All good mate, hope you are well too👍 I think most dealers only go so far as saying "Goretex like material" or "air-permeable material". Would be interested to hear what others think, as there certainly appears to be at least two official manufacturers the Dutch Army have used over the years. Cheers for your input!👍

Hi Jennifer. The Dutch Army bivi is a brilliant design, and a great experience to camp in. Is bivi camping as popular in the US, with bears etc to worry about? Another viewer said I looked like a bear burrito! 😂 Thankfully not a problem here in the UK! Thanks for watching and have a great weekend👍😊
@JenniferLupine
@JenniferLupine Жыл бұрын
@@DesGreene Bear burrito- that’s awesome!! Uh, I don’t know, but whenever we go we bring tents … some people talk about ‘cowboy camping’ sleeping out in good weather with no tent… I would do that if I was with other people…. I only see other people using tents/ or hammocks now. Yep, we have to keep our food and scented items well away from the tent due to bears and other critters, mice, etc. Hang, canister or a scent proof bag. We also eat away from the sleeping area. I haven’t run in to aggressive bears, thankfully! 😉😁

Good Review The best Dutch Army Hooped Bivi is made be Carinthia and IS basically bomb proof. The other is a Spanish manufacturer, Fest…. ?Something or other. Their zips are prone to failure. I had the XL couldn’t use it sadly, too stuffy on a cold wet night. Sold it without properly using it.
@DesGreene

Hi Michael. Useful info about the two manufacturers👍 I had heard reports of failed zips, but always thought it might be down to bags that had had a bit too much abuse! Hi Des, I'd like your opinion on something please. Ive seen alot of people using this with a tarp, but why? Obviously for the extra protection, then why not just stick with a tent??? Also, surely it would be no longer a ''stealth'' set up, I really am looking forward to getting a Dutch bivvy but so many using tarps with it? it just seems odd? Are these bivvy not 100% waterproof? I must be missing something .....:}@@DesGreene

@@stevew585 Hi Steve. I suppose having a lightweight tarp gives you somewhere to sit up, cook a meal etc. They are really waterproof, but if I know it's likely to be raining I'd probably rather take a tent. I did get caught out on my last bivvy camp, being stuck inside it for hours when unexpected rain set in!

Strange thing is Des, I'm guessing if you combined this Bivvy with a quality Tarp, it would weigh more than a Two man tent! lol....see my point...lol that's where the tent comes in!@@DesGreene😁😁 Personally I cant see the point, but each to their own. 😊

Hi Chris. That connecting more with the landscape is the key for me. It is a great experience if the weather isn't too harsh. Hi Des, I'm always very curious about different bivvy setups. The Dutch Army Bivvy does seem to be a popular choice by those who like a like bivvy camp. How much did you pay for it? My backpacking tent is currently with the manufacturer for repair, I only used it twice, and the zip went. Also was a fairly good make too and currently tentless; after watching this, I might consider a more structured bivvy system. It looks easy and quick to put up. Thanks Des. Have a great week and all the best. x

Hi Rachel. Sorry to hear about the tent! ☹ I bought my DA bivi from a German dealer a couple of years back. It was an eBay auction, but I think including postage I paid round about £70 or £80 (postage was about £30 ! 😨). They do seem to have rocketed in price though, and it's best to get one in A1 condition. Not sure it would be my shelter of choice heading into winter, but for the warmer months it's great!

Hi again. Saw your comment about sleeping mats, but it won't let me answer for some reason. The one I've settled on for the bivi is a Vango Trek 3 Compact. As mentioned, because it's only 3cm thick, it uses up less space in the bivi than a fully inflating mat. Cheap for the R value as well! 😁
