Nope, your not wrong. I have many different G Shocks in my collection and to be honest, probably will add more to it but on the other hand and I’m thinking Jory is on the same page too but there’s something to be said about old school analog watches, I prefer those, though also I love the G Shock’s ‘ease of use’ if you get where I’m coming from.

Great video as always, the best field watches should include the insanely cheap SNK80* series or a Timex expedition scouts or field. Since to me field watches should be inexpensive since.. well things happen in the wilderness! Also another classification for field watches should include analog hands for a makeshift compass.

I have an Orient Defender (grey dial/ leather strap). It’s one of my favorites, although I have a humble 16 watch collection. The Defender has an extremely unique complications and feels great on the stock leather band. The automatic rotor is a little noisy, but that’s the only thing I can find wrong with it. The finish isn’t brushed exactly, it looks blasted almost. Great fit and finish for the price, and a screw down crown. It’s kind of a field watch, but has elements of a pilot’s watch too.

I’d consider a “field watch” a watch intended/issued for military use or following common military design standards: printed black dial with white arabic numerals, 12 o'clock marker, lume, matte case, size well below 40 mm, fabric or leather strap, certainly no display back. Rather few of your featured watches match that definition.
@AltonJRuffRev

Great video! Field watches are right up there for me after deck/navy watches. The Orient Defender was my first mechanical watch and for that reason holds a special place in my heart, so it was neat to hear it mentioned. It is 42mm but wears so comfortably and the size helps you read the day and 24hr complications easily. Just a solid watch all around and mine has been extremely accurate. Just wish it hand wound because with the day complication I tend to keep it on a winder. As a daily wearer it would be great. Slips under a cuff too with the flat crystal. I have all kinds of pics of the Defender @halfpastblog since I have a small collection to photograph, if that interests anyone. 👍

I, in fact, do own an Orient Defender. When I first got, I was immediately drawn to the various sub-dials that tell the day of the week & 24hr. It doesn't hack, unfortunately. Also the movement rattles around a little bit. I only now wear it occasionally, but I enjoy looking at when I do and the leather strap is good enough on it. Worth a try.

So true. I have a Bertucci AS-2 that would put any mech watch to shame for ruggedness. I also have a G Shock GD-350 which has such great functionality. I'd be afraid to take a mechanical watch hiking or camping as it'l liable to get hit or dropped and then quit working, and I hate not having a watch in the wilds.

In real life, yes, you are on it.. I use an older Casio ProTrek solar titanium for climbing, hiking, biking. It's a bit bulky but very tough and has survived a lot of bashing and crashing. And has compass, atm pressure, altimeter functions, etc. But for easy days, hard to beat the Hamilton Khaki to wear to work and then walk the dog.

Sir- You are outstanding in your field! Joking aside, To me the quintessential field watch is the hamilton khaki. Everything else is just a variation of it. If you had to define what a field watch is, Id say it should be smallish (38mm) Have a rugged low profile case with a crown guard, at least 50m water resistance, Simple and bold numerals with 12/24 hour markings and simple and easy to read indices. All with good lume and a sweeping second hand.

The common line about military heritage and/or usefulness that you hear about ‘field’ watches isn’t as true as you’d think. Back in the 60s and 70s, before ruggedized digital watches existed and before Rolex became the ultra-luxe behemoth it is now, Army special forces were issued no-date Submariners. There’s also a history of steel diver watches (of several types) in the old Frogman units, but I’ll grant you that that one actually makes sense for the application. I personally wore a ceramic Seamaster 600 during my time in uniform, and almost everyone else I knew who didn’t have an enormous plastic G-shock wore some other kind of diver. I don’t think ‘field’-type watches as you describe them have been popular in the NATO militaries in a long time. If anyone’s curious, my first service watch was one of the crap-tastic ‘AQUA FORCE’ things that they only sell at training PXs. As soon as I could I ditched it for a Timex, but the crown snapped off in the field. Then I tried a Hamilton Khaki, but it got slammed against a bulkhead and the date function broke. Finally bit the bullet and bought the Omega a while later, and that one survived.

I have one of Citizen's first eco drive watches. 0870-H17516 TA Citizen eco drive Titanium WR100m. Bought it almost 20 years ago for £200. Used it for 10 yrs and then it stopped. Thought it was probably a worn out power storage cell. Took it to one of the best watch maker/repairers in London, a very good friend who I happend to go to school with, over 40 yrs ago. Replaced the storage cell and it ran for about a month then stopped again. That's when we realised it was a capacitor problem and that the watch was not charging. Tried to source the part from Citizen, only to hear they didn't make that particular model part anymore and had none at all in stock. So basically the watch was unrepairable! It taught me one thing though. Never, ever, would I buy another eco/solar powered watch ever again. Especially from Citizen. I have stuck with automatic ever since and always will.

During WW2 the field watch was also used by pilots. There was no aviator's watch per se. Hamilton was the prolific brand for these back then. In Germany, the flieger or flyer's watch was issued to flyers as a purpose built instrument. At 55mm, it wad worn on the outer sleeve of the pilot's jacket and removed after flight.

The grey dial Orient Defender was my first automatic watch after years of naively buying low quality fashion watches and being consistently disappointed by how fast they fell apart. It started my watch collection and was my daily wear for several months. Looked awesome dressed down on a khaki NATO, looked awesome dressed up on a reddish brown Hirsch leather band. I’m wearing the blue Mako 2 now just because I always sort of wanted a blue dial watch, but the Defender will always be special to me. I may go back to it one day...

I’ve owned the Defender now for a year and it’s a great watch. Purchased it from Long Island Watches, it’s on sale at the moment at a bargain price. I have the black dial and paired it with a black NATO which makes it pop. Though the leather strap it comes with is of good quality anyway. I get lots of positive comments about the Defender. It comes in decent dial colour choices too. Black/blue/grey and cream. And also on a bracelet if you prefer the all steel look for an extra 10 bucks. Definitely recommend you pick one up as they’re really affordable.

I've got the SARB017, fantastic watch, practicality and beauty perfectly blended. I picked up a SARW019 last week which is a great field watch, arabic numerals, date and day dials, as well as a power reserve meter, sunburst stone grey dial that shifts from grey to brown in certain lights, just a really well put together design.

The Orient Defender is a fantastic watch. The only thing I think lets it down is lack of sapphire.

I need to point out an unusual fact about all watches. Even if I watch has a thousand meter water resistance, the spring pins will rust if a drop of water touches them. I'm on my fourth set of spring pins in one month on my vostok.

I have been thinking of the defender, but am put off by the 42mm, I feel that is just too large for a watch without a bezel, would buy it in a shot if smaller.

Out of these two watches, what one would be more rugged and would be used for camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, office, dress, for everything basically. Rolex explorer 1 (39mm) or omega railmaster (40mm)? Many thanks

I thought I would add 2 field watches to my collection. Both are from Bertucci w/both being 40mm diameter. The A2T Super Classic is 200m screw down with sapphire crystal and titanium case while the DX3 is a 50m polyresin with mineral crystal. Both are on 22mm web zulu straps that are attractive and strong. Mine have japanese quartz movements with identical dials. The A2T has a date complication. Attractive rugged watches that do the job. My old buddy Seiko SNK809 is still my favorite, but getting a rest.

I like the Seiko solar SNE095P2. It is the most legible watch I own. Black dial, huge white numbers and hands. Subtle hints of dive (bezel markings), aviator (delta wing on seconds hand), and dress (polished silver case) watches. Solar feels appropriate for an outdoor watch.

Just ran across this video. Good list. I have an Orient Defender, and can tell you that it is a great field watch. One important feature you didn't mention is the screw down crown. Two watches I think should be on a list of great field watches are the Citizen Chandler BM8180-03E, and the Seiko SNK809.

I have the cream dial orient defender. Was my first real, automatic watch. I do really like it, but it does lack hacking and handwinding which can be annoying. Also, the day complication is not a quickset. However, movement is smooth to operate and it has a very rugged look and has been pretty accurate for me. It's served me well
