What is a Heat Pump Water Heater

The primary heating mechanism is a vapor compression cycle (like those in a refrigerator or air conditioner, but operating in reverse) that transfers heat from the surrounding air to the water stored in the tank. Auxiliary electric resistance elements are also included for reliability and quicker recovery. Most current HPWHs are truly hybrids: they integrate a heat pump and electric resistance element(s) into a single storage tank.

Using conditioned space as an air source for the Heat Pump operations can certainly be feasible. I'm skeptical that it's economic, at any family size. Additionally air flow to the Heat Pump Water Heater must be adequate. Mine, for example is in a vented kitchen closet.

Good question, Since it is a technology that absorbs heat from the surroundings, it will be more efficient when you place it in a place with the higher temperature. If it is hotter outside you can place it outside as it will be easier to move the heat

It's a sacrificial anode which is intended to corrode so that the steel walls of the tank don't.

Their is "heat" all around us. Heat energy is in the form of btu's which is ever present till you reach absolute zero. Which is at -460 degrees Fahrenheit. Which means even if their were "cooler" temperatures surrounding this unit this could still pickup any heat energy surrounding this unit and transfer it to the water. That's why heat pumps for home work well now a days. They are great for cooler Temps.

These "heat pump water heaters" SUCK in cold climates. I live in North Idaho. Fortunately most of these heaters give you an electric option for the really cold months. The added expense might be worth it if you live in Phoenix. Definitely not worth it if you live in the north end of the US

Years ago I had a sink that did not have hot water. So I just screwed a 75 ft black garden hose to the nozzle of the sink.. ran the hose out the window and circled it around the lawn and then brought it back through the window. You would turn on the faucet and the water would go all the way out into the yard and circle around and come back in steaming hot.. hotter than the sink in the kitchen from the hot water heater. You can fill the sink full of hot water before it started to run cool and then just shut the tap off for 5 minutes and you can fill another entire sink with hot water. just think about anytime you've ever tried to wash your hands with a garden hose and burned yourself because you didn't let it run long enough
