The best advice I ever received about giving Priesthood Blessings came from my YSA Bishop/ Stake Patriarch, (he was called to the latter after serving in the former). His council was three fold. 1) Prepare. Most opportunities to give Blessings are not emergencies. He encouraged taking time to first pray for guidance or reading from the scriptures to invite the Spirit. He also felt it was important to ask the person wanting a blessing what they needed and listen carefully. Following this advice I have found a 10-15 conversation prior to the blessing can really help me feel the spirit. 2) Patience. There is rarely a need to rush a blessing. Sometimes people get nervous and want to fill empty space. Focusing on listening to the Spirit instead of time. Some blessings are short, some are long. It is important to relax and let the Holy Ghost speak. 3) Witness Truth. If the words are slow to come, start by witnessing truth, and the spirit will follow. For example, "I bless you with the knowledge that your Father in Heaven loves you..." is always a true statement. Words have then came that were not from me.

I think it’s so important to let young men give blessings participate and give give blessings. Especially within their families. So they can begin to know how to recognize how the Lord is communicating with them.

This led to a fun conversation with my husband about what he experiences when he gives a blessing....which then morphed into a general discussion about how we experience prayer and talk to God. It so interesting how we experiences things both similarly and different at the same time.

Thanks for covering this topic. Priesthood blessing needs open discussion. We don't talk about Bruno.

I think we too often go about giving blessings with the pressure that we must see and testify of the recipient's future or produce some profound insight into their life that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. The best advice I was ever given was on my mission regarding giving blessings was to focus on what spiritual and temporal blessings a person may need and give appropriate assurances and promises unless otherwise dictated by the Spirit (hence the word "blessing").

The blessings that I have given I vaguely remember what words I said outside of what is required.

I think this will be a great book to read. In your interviewing for the book did anyone talk about people testing the Lord by speaking to one priesthood holder then asking for the blessing from another? This happened to me in the mission field, when a Sister Missionary asked for my co-Zone Leader to talk to her in private but was in my line of sight, then proceeded to ask me to give the blessing. She believed she received her answer as I recall.

Whenever I deliver a blessing, I honestly have no idea if I am delivering what the Lord wants me to say, or whether I’m just making it up as I go along.

This is something I feel needs discussion as well. I just found this book called “My Will or Thine” by B. Russell McConkie online, which I might get for added insight on this subject.

I only see a kindle version on Amazon. Is there a physical copy I can buy?

My heart says that it’s not the person giving the blessing that’s important, it’s the Priesthood itself that’s important. So for me, why is any of it important? I’ve never asked anyone or been asked before a blessing, except which type of blessing they need. They tell us who they want to be the “mouthpiece”.

Always wondered about this since being introduced to the church in high school. Good vid

There is so much ambiguity in this! Just like the apostles testifying of Christ there testimony not of having seen him but knowing as if they had. FYI the original twelve were told as were members of the church the we must ask for it and get it that second comforter seeing Jesus. Priesthood blessing kind of turns into an inspired prayer there is lots of pressure to deliver a biblical type power blessing.

My companion gave a priesthood blessing while I was on my mission to an elderly lady who was suffering from cancer. He told her that she would be healed and live. …she died a few days later… …blessings are for comfort and nice words, not for actual healing.
@westonwoodbury3011 Жыл бұрын
Ouch, that sucks did it help you in any positive way having that happen?

She was healed because she physically died and she kept on living at the other side of the veio. Thats what came to my mind.

I'm not sure what happened there. Maybe the healing was of a different sort. Or, maybe your companion said that by mistake, either not knowing well how to discern revelation from God, or not being well-enough prepared for the blessing, feeling pressured, anxious, etc. I imagine that's common, but I have read on the Church website that the blessing that the person needs will be provided by the Lord through the Priesthood regardless of whether the priesthood holder says the right words.

@@EricLovesCHRIST You said you're an Aaronic priest, that means you have the Aaronic priesthood. It looks like you are afraid to hold the Melchizedec priesthood.
