What is a literature review in a dissertation?

Knowing what a literature review is, and what it does in a dissertation, is crucial for writing a successful thesis.
In this video, I'm going to explain the importance of conducting a literature review and outline four critical reasons why it matters.
We’ll start by exploring why a literature review is key for demonstrating your understanding. By familiarising yourself with key studies and influential figures in your field, you show a solid grasp of what’s already been explored.
Then we’ll move on to look at the gap in the literature - everyone talks about "the gap", but what does that mean, exactly? Well, it’s a bit like the new kid at school spotting empty seats in the cafeteria. By pinpointing areas that haven't been thoroughly investigated, you can find unique angles for your dissertation. This step is essential for making a meaningful contribution to the academic conversation.
Next up, it’s the juicy stuff - building theoretical frameworks. As a researcher, you'll explore various theories and integrate them to form a theoretical framework that guides your dissertation. I’ll walk you through an example to demonstrate how a theoretical framework acts as a compass, providing direction and coherence to your research.
Lastly, we’ll explore why the literature review is crucial for identifying your options methodology-wise. By examining existing research, you can choose the most appropriate methods, such as in-depth interviews or participant observation, ensuring a robust and well-informed approach to your dissertation.
By the time we get to the end of the video, you’ll be super clear about what literature reviews are and why they matter for dissertations.
