This was incredibly satisfying! I've mostly heard the term "mystery box" as a trait, not a subgenre-type, and usually in the disparaging JJ Abrams way. But it turns out...I LOVE mystery boxes. Even when they don't totally work I still love them, despite the frustration. But when they do they are the most satisfying thing in the world to me. This is really helpful, and you've given me both a bunch of watch and a new way to understand what I think is literally my favorite type of story. Subscribed for sure!

I'm at a "loss" for words at your mystery box summary.

"A Series Of Unfortunate Events" is an amazing example. I loved your video on it. Really the only thing it didn't do was introduce the main mystery right away, but I actually liked that it took some time. I loved that the show gave hints at VFD in the first season, and I feel that the hints made up for the lack of obvious mystery. In some ways I like that better than a BIG, apparent problem early on. That's something that the books didn't do.

Monarch Legacy of Monsters is a great example of what happens when you have a Mystery Box type story with characters that aren't engaged with the mystery. Was great when you had characters on board with the mysteries, but so frustrating when the main characters kept refusing to follow the plot.

Have you ever seen the show Devs? It's a mini-series from 2020. I really enjoyed it. It has a more... hazy energy? It's a super interesting watch and I think the case could be made for it to be considered a mystery box.

I’m so happy that you showed clips from severance because it’s an amazing mystery box story that I don’t think has gotten enough attention. Also have you watched “the peripheral” I think it would classify as a mystery box story but i dont like some of the ways the mystery’s were solved and the “main mystery” kinda blurs away throughout the story. Nevertheless it’s quite good 👍

You should have did a series tying all these series together and then at the last video just have JJ Abrams and his stupid box.

I've recently read "Lockwood & Co" series (Netflix killed the show and *I needed* to find out what's behind that bloody door) and it has a lot of Mystery Box elements - it hits most of the points from your list. I mean it's not Dark or Gravity Falls or ASOUE by any means, but it was a decent read that encouraged some thinking about the plot.

Your list keeps making me think of „Once Upon A Time,“ but that one has no mysteries. It's worth mentioning though, because is follows the list to a T, simply replacing each instance of the word mystery with the word lore. Once will spoon-feed You the plot, but it's just so much and so interconnected that you end up taking notes just as much as if it really was a mystery box story

I mean it’s a mystery to me. “Who gave Henry the book”, “does Mr. Gold really remember everything”, etc.

@@77dreimaldie0 thanks lol. And the whole August thing, and “oh what’s in the case” (literal mystery box). Trying to avoid spoilers in case folks are intrigued and want to watch later, but definitely early scenes, or all the fun family tree of it etc

Maybe look at Naruto? Between Naruto’s parentage mystery, all of the Uchiha drama, and everything else, it seems pretty mystery box-y to me. The episode count looks daunting but like 25-30% of Naruto is filler which doesn’t impact the main story overall. They had to wait for the sequel series to start up while the original was still airing so they did filler to compensate

I want to ask if you know if the secret series by pseudonymous Bosch is a mystery box story
@BigBlueBackpack8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I’d say so. It definitely takes a lot of cues from A Series of Unfortunate Events.

do you think it would work for a mystery box story to start off with two big mysteries, as long as they interconnect?

Don't suppose this trope applies to video games too, does it? Because I think the Puzzlebox trope would definitely apply to Poppy Playtime and Garten of Banban.
