Some more useful information, is what the data in a normal map means per pixel. The normal is translated per pixel by the following: X: -1 to +1 : Red: 0 to 255 Y: -1 to +1 : Green: 0 to 255 Z: 0 to -1 : Blue: 128 to 255 When a pixel of the normal map does not affect the normal, it has a value of [0, 0, -1] ( Color value [127,127,255] ) which is why normal maps look mostly blue.
