Solid mini-interview with good insights on potlatches. Feedbackwise- the background music was a bit loud and distracting from the interview itself.

Thank you Ethel for answering this question...as usual you exemplify love, humility, and gentle and strong leadership as you guide us through the learning about how you celebrate, grieve, and come together at the potlach. Love the treasure/payment piece

UBI is a watered down, western, 21st century potlatch. If only we could learn from each other. I have always thought that the potlatch was one of the most humane systems in the world. Not to mention fun.

Potlatch is gift of wealth which was originally acquired through voluntary interactions. UBI funds are acquired by taking money from the population by force. Not the same at all.

The similarity is that they are both cultural systems that redistribute wealth from the wealthy to the needy. It's not surprising that there are differences given that the potlatch predates UBI by centuries, if not millennia. Don't forget, the economic system we have in place that financially enables the wealthy requires consumers. The consumers are diminishing. UBI will ultimately perpetuate the existing system that may otherwise implode.@@PythagorasHyperborea

Potlatches ended in frenzies of violence when the chiefs competed against each other to see how many slaves they could kill.

@@redwater4778 Indigenous Canadians share the same psychology as people in the rest of the world. I'm sure this happened sometimes. But the records I've read didn't say so. One can only make an educated guess about the past and the recorded material. But many West Coast people have favorable opinions.
